Twenty-Seven Percent

December 15, 2012

People’s attitudes toward Bible prophecy vary widely. Some believers are so preoccupied with it that they are constantly talking about the latest world events, thinking they are biblical signs that Christ could return at any moment. Others are so casual in their view of prophecy that it seems as if they don’t believe it’s relevant to the Christian life at all.

So is prophecy important? Here are some facts to help put things in perspective. There are 31,124 verses in the Bible. Of these verses, 8,352 have prophetic content of some kind. That’s 27 percent of Scripture!

Because prophecy occupies more than a quarter of Scripture, the believer should deeply value its role in God’s revelation. But in doing so, we should remember why God put it there. After describing how the world will end, Peter concludes, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives” (2 Peter 3:11 niv). In other words, we should make choices daily for godly living that conform to our future dwelling place.

God has given us information about the future to glorify Himself, to assure us of His sovereign control of history, and to challenge us to godly living.

He is coming! I shall know Him,
Jesus! My beloved Lord!
Changed forever to His likeness;
Oh! what joy this will afford. —Dimmock
Look for Christ’s return and you’ll live for Christ’s glory.

Read: 2 Peter 3:1-13

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness? —2 Peter 3:11

Hebrews 5-7

I've been too busy this week to do anything special for tonight.

Last Sunday I drove a 400 mile round trip to Macon and back to see the Ehnes String Quartet at Mercer University in a program of Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, Wolf and Bartok. I played a role in the formation of the quartet, so I had to see them in action. It was good connecting with the gang again.

My old buddy Robert deMaine, principal cellist of the Detroit Symphony (and cellist of the quartet) will be taking the first chair cello slot at the Los Angeles Philharmonic next fall. I tipped him off to the better neighborhoods and private schools, things I learned in my 19 years in the Greater L. A. Area back in the old days.

Second violinist Amy Moretti runs the Music Department at Mercer, and she and husband Steve now have two boys. I babysat for their firstborn at a reception in Seattle a few years ago.

Violist Richard O'Neill, who is half Korean, has a slot on the UCLA faculty.

First violinist Jimmy Ehnes is now one of the world's leading violinists, now that Itzhak Perlman is semi-retired. I was amazed that he and the gang put the Schubert G Major Quartet, the Mount Everest of string quartets, to bed in just three rehearsals. They're playing that in Seattle next month.

It was good to immerse myself in the music again and talk shop with my old buddies from the Seattle days.

Tomorrow I'll be posting a choral work by contemporary English composer John Rutter on the Sunday Chapel thread, so don't miss it.

Thank you for that. Tomorrow night’s entry is a multi-movement sacred work for the holiday season that he wrote in 1990 for the Church of England. He is one of the best contemporary composers in the game. He knows how to write a melody.

Kije, more properly pronouced as "key-ZHAY", is Russian for "however". In Pushkin's story "The Tsar Never Sleeps", some generals write a report for the tsar that says, "The lieutenant, however..." The tsar misses the comma and thinks that there is a Lieutenant However in his army. No one has the stones to tell the tsar that he has misread the report, so they invent the story of brave Lieutenant However. The rest of the story is of his life and death, told to the tsar to avoid telling him he has made a mistake.

Prokofiev provided the musical soundtrack for the film version. This segment was used extensively by Woody Allen in his 1975 film "Love and Death", back when he was still funny.

I love that story of the “Tsar’s new Clothes”! LOL. My Dad told me the origins of Lt. Kije many years ago.

This tradition of making up stories to hide the truth continued with Stalin. Only General Zhukov, and perhaps Khrushchev, had the “stones’ to tell Ol’ Uncle Joe the true conditions on the front during the dark days of WW2. I am sure there were many more fabricated Lt. Kije’s!

Sting uses more of this marvelous piece of music in his (obnoxious) song “Russians”.

Publius, I LOVE talking shop with you any day! Even though I am a “pop” musician,. i LOVE the Classics.
