A team of golden retrievers made an 800-mile journey from the Chicago area to Newtown, Conn., over the weekend to comfort those affected by the recent school massacre.
Lutheran Church Charities deployed about 10 of the canines Saturday evening for residents who want to pet them while they talk or pray with the dog's handler, said Tim Hetzner, president of the Addison-based organization.

Are you saying that throughout history, the only people that have had their hearts mended after losing loved ones, believed in Jesus?
Back in the 70’s, I saw the movie “The Doberman Gang” and prayed to God to send me one of those wonderful dogs to protect me from my pedophile uncle.
Not a week later, a ‘stray’ one showed up in my yard.
The uncle never touched me again.

Stuff like that has been repeated in my life *many* times over and dogs have have saved my life and my sanity more times than I can count.
I believe with all of my heart that God Himself sent each and every one of those miraculous creatures into my life to
‘fix’ or ‘heal’ whatever my heartache was.
Whenever I need ‘tangible proof’ that God watches over me, all I need to do is reach over and touch the face of the dog that’s pressed against my hip, watching over me, 24/7.
God sends us comfort in whatever form He knows will fit us best.
I applaud them for sending those dogs to those kids.
Kids will open up to a dog instantly with feelings that they might not share with a person.
Around here, we always say, “Golden Retrievers, saving the world!”
Thank you for sharing such a personal, touching story.
I too believe that these dogs will have the ability to get those they come in contact with to “open up”. Many are probably suppressing emotions and these dogs just may help them to break down the barriers and make a start toward healing. At the very least, they’re sure to provide comfort in the midst of an experience no one should have to endure.

Reminds me of the time shortly after 9/11/01 that someone posted (might have been here) a variation of “The Rainbow Bridge” poem relating to that awful day.
All these years later, thinking of that post (which I think I have somewhere) brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. If someone out there has it handy, we could use a reminder.

My first Dobermann heard all the things that my parents refused to hear about the uncle.

The dog may not have been a shrink who could answer me but he sure saved me from the self-imposed exile I’d been living in.
Until he came into my life, I wouldn’t go out of the house except to go to school or be dragged to the mandatory family gatherings which the uncle was *always* at....and waiting.
For four years, I stayed inside, fearful of venturing out because that uncle was always around, somewhere.
After the dog, I slowly started back to my old life of playing outside, riding my horse in the woods and being a kid again.
To this day, my dogs hear the things nobody else will listen to.
If I didn’t have them, I don’t like to think about what might happen.
They used to do this sort of ‘emotional coaxing’ thing with kids and stuffed animals.
Kids aren’t stupid.
They’re not gonna spill their guts to a teddy bear.
Dogs are now being used in courtrooms to help child abuse victims make it through their testimonies without fear or hesitation.
A child ~may~ understand and believe that “God is with them” but it’s much easier for them if they can see and feel that Dog is with them, too.
So far, he’s been treated more kindly than he deserves.

After a long day enduring grumpy people and fighting hostile traffic, I arrive home to the adoration of my dogs. That a simple creature has so much love to give reminds me that its Creator loves me even more. They are a special gift.
But remember, Jesus as God has created dogs to be extentions of what He does, work to heal hearts that are broken.
One of these dogs is a ministry dog from my church. She helps out a lot at a childrens hospital. It is amazing how having a big furry dog can put a smile on kids going through some pretty bad things there.
Who are you to know, much less declare that Jesus would not choose to work through dogs as part of God's creation?
IMHO, many dogs are imbued with a touch of the angelic and do a large share of God's work on this earth.
It’s good to know that dogs are mending hearts over there.
But I still wouldn’t trust one with brain surgery.
Your wife is a very wise woman.
