The fellow Marine who was with Jon Hammar when Mexican customs officials arrested him for carrying an illegal shotgun said his friend made every effort to follow the law, but got bad information from officials on both sides of the border.
Ian McDonough, 27, told FoxNews.com that four U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents told Hammar before he crossed into Mexico that as long as the required permit, which he completed, was submitted and he declared the gun to Mexican authorities, there would be no problem in bringing the vintage shotgun across the border.
"Jon was told to fill out a form with his name and the specs of the rifle and show it to the customs agent on the Mexican side," said McDonough, who was traveling with Hammar in an RV to Costa Rica, where they planned to hunt and surf. "I don't know what they expected Jon to do after they gave him the registration form and sent him on his way."

There are only 3 things you have to remember about going to Mexico:
1) “Don’t follow the rules and they will arrest you!”
and
2) “Follow the rules and they will arrest you!”
Followed by
3) “Just pay the money, Gringo, and you can go home”
(oh, and maybe 4: “Your President will do nothing to help you”)
You hit the nail right on the head with #4
Nothing good happens south of the border.
How about, “Don’t go to Mexico.”
Another thought ~ we hold seveal million Mexicans in here captive conditions ~ suppose we release them and return them to their homes IN MEXICO!
A veritable prisoner swap eh.
The moral of the story: Paga La Mordida.
Anybody who goes to Mexico in spite of warnings not to go does not have my empathy if arrested or killed.
Here is a link to a petition page on the White House’s web site in case you want to sign it. If enough people sign it, the Administration will respond:

Mexico is s Third World Hole...and no one should go there. Period
The only good use for Mexico is to use it for nuclear testing
There’s no rush for transparency in this case from 2011 where the ex-mayor of Tijuana (one of the big shots of Pena Nieto’s PRI party) was found to have 88 guns in his possession, only 10 of which had permitted. Mr. Hank, if I recall correctly, spent a few days in jail and was released.

Well, that's exactly the system our betters want for us - laws are just suggestions to them, but have the full force of Big Brother's jackboot when applied to us.
Actually they were going to Costa Rica. they just had to go through Mexico
Read the article. They were traveling to Costa Rica in an RV and had to go through Mexico.

“I would sign the petition, but I do not want an email from thisWhite House”
Yeah, I don’t ‘want’ it either. Sooner or later we gotta stop hiding. Those who show up rule.
I find that the delete button comes in handy for unwanted email :-).
