I'm not long haul driving anymore (got a local gig) but still get trucker news in my email. Saw this earlier today and thought I'd post it.

I know the stats. Professional truckers, with their truck, are considered at fault about 0.0025% of the time, about 1 out of 400 accidents.

Still, it can be a bit intimidating, if I’m driving in the middle lane and I’ve got two semis on either side driving at the same speed I am, and I can’t go faster. :)

Maybe truckers should boycott some towns or cities.

Probably only take 2-3 days for the population centers to come begging for supplies.

OK, then the city can compensate the truck drivers and the businesses that have to have two vehicles haul instead of one.

“The mayor of Columbiana, Alabama has called for a ban on semi-trucks driving in their downtown area. He says that trucks are the main cause of traffic jams in his city..”

Okay, how is the mayor going to have food delivered to the grocery stores?

Columbiana, Alabama. At the 2010 census the population was 4,197. Who would have thought they were plagued by traffic jams.

I guess they all hit the road at the same time.

I don’t know about Columbiana, but where I live even the Coca Cola trucks are semi’s. The beer trucks are too, now maybe Columbiana doesn’t need Coca Cola, but surely they drink beer.

I lived in Columbiana Ala. as a youngin'.

Had to check our gunbelts at the door to the (private) kindergarten.

Heard they have an illegal immigrant problem now. It's difficult to believe that they could possibly have an issue with semi's.

“Cities Banning Trucks and New Truck Stops”

Nothing to be worried about here.

Truckers and trucking companies should just withdraw from delivering to those cities.

Problem solved.

I don’t doubt that they will ban them too. And then whine when everything goes up in price (even faster than it is now!).

Prosperity and success are the twin evils of modern times.

They are being extinguished.

Too many idiots are getting elected to office all over the Nation at every level of public service. This means of course that too many idiots are running for office, which in turn means public service is no longer envisioned as an esprit de corps so to speak, thus draws less than quality candidates for the constituency to rationalize.

The next thing is they will try to ban airplanes because they create an eyesore against the pristine blue sky and have such a nasty sound.

This is somewhat akin to towns that died in the 1800’s for not wanting the railroad in their town. Maroons

Lots of truckers looking to be offended I think. Here is the Bing map. Looks like access to about two blocks is involved. The through traffic can avoid the one downtown street and still pass through. All businesses look like they can be accessed from the back side. And I can see a downtown roundabout being a problem with tractor trailers.

Lots of towns, big and small, have access restrictions in their downtown areas. I’ve never been to Manhattan, but I don’t recall seeing pictures of bumper to bumper big rigs there. It might make more sense to look at the town and the situation before acting like this is a bad decision.

I’d expect they know more about their town than a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Kind of like banning food production because it’s too messy - that’ll work out good...
