In the days after the horrific tragedy in Newtown, Conn., I made it clear that I believe it is time for us to move from rhetoric to action to prevent future acts of senseless mass violence.
Since then, much has been made of those comments some of it accurately reflecting what I said, some not. Because I am an A-rated, lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and a proud defender of the Second Amendment, some people viewed my comments as a tipping point in the debate about guns in America.
The true tipping point, of course, is what happened in that elementary school on Dec. 14 the unimaginable slaughter of 20 children and the teachers and staff members who were defending them. When children die tragically, it rips at our very hearts. Even in our grief, we demand a reckoning.
That reckoning is now upon us, and we owe it to those children and their families to take it seriously. As a nation, we must reconsider the treatment of the mentally ill. We must challenge a popular culture that accepts stomach-churning violence in our movies and video games. We must look at the use of high-capacity ammunition magazines and military-style assault weapons.
Committed gun owners like me can and must listen to reasonable ideas about preventing mass violence. But whatever steps we take must be comprehensive and must bring the entertainment industry and mental health community to the table. We cannot snap our fingers, push one-track legislation that focuses exclusively on guns and pat ourselves on the back. Such an approach certainly wont fare well in Congress. More important, it wont fully address the problem...

Is Joe up for reelection in 10 ?
Time to find a real conservative to run against him.
Not until 2018, unfortunately.
“I dont know anyone that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about.”
another knee jerk idiot trying to confuse people with hunting instead of tyranny prevention...lets talk you resign...you broke your oath.
I don’t hunt at all, Joe.
My guns are for criminals and tyrants.
I do not want or need you representing me or my rights any longer, because you are a dishonest person.
You are fired.
Tyranny prevention AND Self Defense.
Anyone claiming you do not need High Capacity Ammunition Magazines for Self Defense is clearly lying on behalf of the gun grabbing agenda, IMO.
Munchkin is history in WVA.. Bye Bye girly man.
Was the CT slaughter an epic tragedy? Absolutely. Is slaughtering more than a million alive children a tragedy? Apparently, not to too many of these exploitative politiwhores like Joe.
The NRA needs to downgrade this mental slug to an F- rating.
By all means, Joe. Let's look at their use.
Do promise us, though, that you won't break out in a sweat when the data shows that mililtary-style assault weapons" (as you so fear mongeringly put it) are used in less homicides than handguns or knives.
Yeah, I really do not get these fools.
Do they think every person who buys a gun is a hunter and purchasing that gun to hunt with?
Not too many people hunt with pistols. Tactical shotguns are generally not for duck hunting.
The .223 round is generally not considered effective for large game.
I am rapidly losing my love for represenative government, because I do not need some dishonest moron to represent me at all.
Any politicans that attack the 2nd amendment in any way or attempt to infringe upon the right of the people to bear arms is an enemy of freedom.
Maybe Joe can convince congress to have a meaningful discussion on vehicle capacity. Minivans are high capacity vehicles. Therefore they must be more dangerous to the general public than two seat roadster type vehicles.
I read somewhere the other day that an astonishing 2% of that staggering 358 deaths by rifle were by rifles fitting the so-called “assault weapon” description. Amazing. Why haven’t we trampled 300 million peoples’ Constitutionally protected rights and spit on the graves of all who have fought and died to protect those rights before now?
A West Virginia Pro Gun Rights group protested in front of Manchins office in Charleston on Saturday. I was glad to have been a part of it. https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/WVCDL/

In 2008 and 2009, gun homicide was the leading cause of death among black teens.
Young black males die from gun violence at a rate 2.5 times higher than Latino males, and eight times higher than white males. Gun injuries are suffered by black teens at a rate ten times higher than white teens.
Along with the statistic that, since gun laws started being liberalized in the early 1990s, the murder rate has dropped by two thirds.
The United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world an average of 88 per 100 people. That puts it first in the world for gun ownership and even the number two country, Yemen, has significantly fewer 54.8 per 100 people
But the U.S. does not have the worst firearm murder rate that prize belongs to Honduras, El Salvador and Jamaica. In fact, the U.S. is number 28, with a rate of 2.97 per 100,000 people
Puerto Rico tops the worlds table for firearms murders as a percentage of all homicides 94.8%. Its followed by Sierra Leone in Africa and Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean
Bonehead, you’re not going to help using the BS media’s lingo. You’re letting them define the terms of debate!
it’s political speak for I am lying to you... I will do whatever the One says. I’m under his spell yes master I will do your bidding!!!
Sen. Manchin: “Vote for me, ‘cause I totally care about children and sh*t.”
To self ‘I’m gonna ride this monkey right into my next term!’
That’s all I hear.
3500 murdered children EVERY DAY in the US. 1.27 million abortions every year. What does that convey about the value of human life?
I think the liberal disease is called ‘magic thinking’, as in posting a ‘gun free zone’ sign will deter a person bent on slaughtering people. If you will notice, even this asshat Joe mentioned armed response as slowing the perp or ending the attack, but then the bastard switched to the magic thinking and went skipping off into never-never land.
(1) USA gun murders - 8,600
(2) Whites commit less than half
(3) Per capita, Blacks commit 8 times more than whites
(4) Per capita, Hispanics commit 4 times more than whites
(5) Rate of gun murders by USA whites almost the same as Switzerland
(6) 80% of white gun deaths in America are suicide
Well, on top of that, his statement wasn't even accurate as applied to hunting. People who hunt sounders -- dozens! -- of feral hogs know they'd better take something heavier than a varminter, in case they run into Hogzilla's younger and faster cousin. Hunters can also run into packs of canids, everything from coyotes to feral dogs (which were everywhere on Eleuthera in the Bahamas when I was there) to wolves. In parts of Africa, congresses of baboons are occasionally a threat when their numbers run up or food gets low.
But you're right, this wasn't about hunting in 1787, or now.
Those guys absolutely do not want an "honest discussion about race" ... and crime.
By the way, during the "crack wars" that ran from about 1986 to 1995, the annual number of murders in the U.S. was over 24,000 /all weapons and all reasons. Half the dead were YBM's, 91% of them offed by other YBM's ... who were also murdering out to the tune of 50% of all non-black victims. So their bag was 3/4 of the murders in the United States, committed by 1/2 of the 12% or so of the country who were black.
Yeah, that's 6% of the G-pop doing 75% of the murders. And if you add the age factor, it was about 1/4 of the total number of black men .... and not even a large fraction of the young men, who were responsible. No wonder they don't want to talk about crime.
When the NRA “Court Marshals their so called defenders of the 2nd Amendment, Ill re-up, I left in 1994, because they kissed the Liberals ass.
Someone keep me posted!
They aren't debating. They're doing what Soledad O'Brien did with Don Kates or someone she had on -- doing a weeping, wailing, blouse-tearing, wild-woman-at-the-funeral tantrum all over the other side: "You're so MEEEAAAANNNN! WHYYYYYYYY?!!" and so on.
Remember, the Left never "debates". They brawl, they eye-gouge, they use saps.
The hunting canard, the over-ten-rounds magazine canard, all the useless private opinion canards held by idiots versus the irrefutable RIGHT affirmed to us in the US Constitution to bear arms. No hunting, no limits, just rights.
Drop the max mag limit to 10. What are you gonna do when a madman takes TWO pistols to the slaughter? You gonna ban more than one gun per person? That’s what all you gun grabbers want. Hell, you want to ban them alltogether.
He was just reelected for six years, 2013-2019.
Unfortunately, Manchin's next term begins in ten days and lasts until January 3, 2019. That ship has sailed.
We are not going to have the same form of government in January 2019 as we have now.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half [communist] and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved I do not expect the house to fall but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of [Marxism] will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new North as well as South."
The term is “court martial”. Didn’t serve, didja?
Sad to say the previous Republican candidate, Raese, had his head firmly parked up his ass. While he’s a successful business man, he’s a neophyte at politics. There was an issue that was extremely politically lethal for Manchin that the man could have utilized without getting his hands dirty.
He didn’t.
Add a spineless divided Republican party and it’s unlikely a Republican will replace Manchin.
Good for you!
Thank you for your service.
And the idea that stopping the sale of 'assault weapons' will somehow prevent the use of the ones already in circulation.
Idiots
If the citizens are forced to give up semi-autos and “high-capacity” magazines, then so should all the law enforcement agencies. The gun-grabbers’ mantra is that semi-autos are for the sole purpose of killing a large number of people at one time. Well, then, the obvious question — since the gun-grabbers think it’s such a good idea for the police to have semi-autos — is just what large number of people are the police looking to kill at one time? Who specifically comprise that group of people?
Joe, Joe, Joe. You are an ignoramus. For one thing, what you are talking about is a magazine, not a clip. Moreover, the Second Amendment is NOT about hunting. But, you know that already. So, you have outed yourself as just another whore politician.
The 2nd Amendment ain’t about duck hunting. It is there to protect us against tyrants.
FL
Hmmmm. I like the trapdoor Springields, both the Long Tom (.45-70) and the carbine (.45-55), but for nostalgia purposes more than anything else. The .30-40 Krag was a POS, that’s why we didn’t keep it in the armory very long (especially after the Spanish-American War where the Spaniards were kicking our butts with their 8mm Mausers).
