NBC host David Gregory asked President Barack Obama this morning, "Is this your Lincoln moment?"
The question came up after Obama invoked the movie Lincoln when talking about Republicans and Democrats coming together to work out a deal on the "fiscal cliff.
"Well, no," Obama said in response to Gregory's question. "Look, a) I never compare myself to Lincoln. And b) obviously the magnitude of the issues is quite different from the Civil War and slavery. The point, though, is democracy has always been messy. We're a big diverse country that is constantly sort of arguing about all kinds of stuff. But eventually, we do the right thing."

Early in his presidency, George W. Bush had a joint press conference with someone from France (maybe Chirac). David Gregory made a point of asking a question in French to put down Bush for not knowing French. Snarkier than the average MSM twit.
Of course it was harder to get the teleprompters to work because Edison hadn't invented electricity yet.

President Washington personally lead an army into the field to prevent the secession of western Pennsylvania. Right or wrong, the notion that “you can never leave” didn’t start with President Lincoln, who was following almost 100 years of federal precident vis-a-vis insurrections.
I think the last time we were actually “a loose collection of Sovereign states with a weak central government...”, as you describe, was under “The Articles of Confederation and PERPETUAL UNION” (full title, emphasis mine lol).

I respect the military and the Defense Department but aside from them the Federal Gov’t is a jobs, medical benefits and pension program that can fund itself via printing it’s own imaginary money via the Federal Reserve buying up Federal issued debt
This Federal jobs program is increasing the preserve of liberals, gays, and incompetent affirmative action hires such as lesbians, women and minorities. They will only hire their own. This theme varies from Federal agency to Federal agency
