HOUSTON -- At the Light Bulb Depot near his home in The Heights, Randy Gingrich just bought another batch of florescent bulbs. “Since I started three years ago, I haven’t replaced a compact fluorescent yet,” he says. “So I’m happy with that.” “In my ceiling fans, each one of mine has four lights,” says Allen Tabb, who’s been selling light bulbs for 16 years. “So instead of using 240 watts of electricity, I only use 60 watts of electricity. And I get the same light output.” Sure, fluorescent bulbs are more expensive than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs and some people complain about losing a special glow in their homes. But in the long run, homeowners say they’re cheaper. Besides, pretty soon Americans won’t have much choice. As the New Year arrives, new rules bring the nation closer to the end of the traditional incandescent light bulb. Energy efficiency legislation adopted by Congress and signed by former President George W. Bush in 2007 is gradually phasing out the standard bulbs that have illuminated American homes for more than a century. The new rules have applied to 100 watt bulbs since the beginning of 2012. In 2013, the restrictions have expanded to 75 watt bulbs. In January 2013, the new rules will apply to 60 and 40 watt bulbs.

Is that a typo in the article? Do 60’s and 40’s disappear THIS month or is that supposed to be 2014? Will we see Henry Hill and Tommy DeVito selling bulbs out of the trunk of their car?
Most of congress pass laws to benefit thier pocket, how many of these cretans have stock or investments in energy efficient light bulbs? 2013 the year we listen to thier lying statements and we look behind the curtain for the truth
I find them very hard to read by. If they are so great let the market work and people will naturally buy them, we don’t need govt. to tell us what is good for us.
I’ve hoarded enough to last for 5 years, hoping someone will come to their senses and repeal this job killer.
And how am I supposed to keep my baby chicks warm in their brooder this spring? With the cases of bulbs I stocked up earlier?
I’m glad they haven’t noticed heat lamps people use to warm calves and piglets. Those things suck the electricity.
Feds phase out more light bulbs in 2013 but phase in mercury in the new bulbs.Only the feds work like that.
Their 100 W bulb only puts out the light of a 75 W, that is, about 1250 lumens. The 75 is equivalent to a 60, the 60 is a 40.
In other words, these are lower efficiency bulbs. You need more bulbs to get the same light or you get used to dimmer lighting.
They don’t get as hot so they put out less light and last a lot longer. Also, the light is ‘warmer’ colored.
For output per watt can’t beat LEDs problem is they’re expensive. But in using them my Christmas display light bill should be at least a 1/5th of what it would be with incandesents but that is no reason to ban them.
I put 2 track light fixtures in my kitchen last March. Each one houses 6 CFL bulbs with the GU24 base. (Pin prongs instead od screw-type)
In the first 8 months of service, 7 out of the 12 burned out, and replacements cost $6 to $8 each.
So much for extra life and cost savings over incandescents... And a good illustration of ill-conceived gov’t regulation. Can¡t wait until they get their hands on all of our healthcare...

Incandescent lamps are and will be available. The legislation mandates lower wattage input for the same light output. The majors are using halogen burners inside a traditional bulb shaped envelope. Bottom line, that $0.69 lamp will now be $1.20.
It’s time we turn out the lights on the Feds. It’s apparant that we can’t keep a federal government government federal. We now have a national government that controls every aspect of our lives. Some of my kids just went to DC last week and said they saw the Constitution. I asked them if it was in the national cemetery.
We had some in an outside light and they lasted about six months. I also have a lamp post that has had the same incandescent bulb I put into it in 1990.

I’ve replaced many CFLs. Seems at least 1 goes out every other month. More expensive CFLs plus the need to drop it off at a collection center when they burn out, and the tint and output is inferior to incandescents makes the CFLs a clear winner.
It should be 2014. Chalk one up to another outstanding editor.
