House GOP opposition to fiscal cliff bill grows
Politico ^ | January 1, 2013 | Jake Sherman and Carrie Budoff Brown

An overwhelming number of House Republicans in a party meeting are calling on their leadership to amend the Senate’s bill to avert the fiscal cliff and send it back to the upper chamber, according to several sources in the Tuesday afternoon meeting.

GOP leadership has not made a decision on what to do with the Senate-passed tax hike bill. They are using this meeting to listen to lawmaker concerns. They’ll have another meeting this afternoon, where a decision could come on whether to bring the bill to the floor.

One thing is clear: there is serious disdain among House Republicans for what the Senate did in the middle of the night.

Retiring Rep. Steve LaTourette of Ohio asked House Republicans why the House would “heed the votes of sleep deprived octogenarians,” according to a source in the meeting.

Amending the bill would throw into serious flux the carefully negotiated agreement between Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden.

Rep. Spencer Bachus said after exiting the Republican meeting that he expects the House to amend the fiscal cliff deal and send it back to the Senate.

“I would be shocked if this bill didn’t go back to the Senate,” Bachus said.

But there are items that are already causing some concern inside the House Republican Conference. The lack of spending cuts in the legislation seems to be the top concern. Unemployment benefits, which were extended in the Senate bill, are extended for a year with no corresponding spending reductions.

Emerging as a stick point among House Republicans is how McConnell and Biden delayed the sequester — automatic spending cuts. The two-month delay is being viewed by House Republicans as inadequate in that it doesn’t reduce spending immediately.

Who smacked LaTourette & got him to say something intelligent for a change?

They need to invert the numbers, $41 in cuts for every $1 in tax increase. And no tax increase for 2013, they could only start in 2014.

The U.S.A is a dictatorship and the news media are the dictators.

call GOP Congressmen in the House, tell them not to vote for this HORRIBLE bill nor any deal ,there is no cliff as that “cliff” is media lies to force them to agree to tax increases

Congress switchboard number: (202) 224-3121.

Haha, Plan “B” was so awesome. The GOP was negotiating with themselves before ever getting an amended version of their August bills from the Senate. They do not know how to negotiate with charlatans.

Years ago there was a provision in the Unemployment Benefits rules that you did NOT have to take a job that was not comparable (in pay) to the one you lost. Is that still part of the rules?? If it is perhaps the new reality needs to be acknowledged that a lot of those good paying union and middle managment jobs are NEVER coming back, at least not any time soon. The rules could then be rewritten to say that after a certain time limit, one should take a job that pays 80% or some other amount of what one earned previously.

How long can someone stay on unemployment now? Is it still 99 weeks? How is that done - with federal monies?

I’ll believe it when it’s defeated.

People are dropping out of the Republican party because of what the GOPe has done in disregarding/damaging the party platform.

If they were brave enough to disrespect you once then you better believe they'll be brave enough to do it again. Unknown quotes

I think now, most states have an initial period of 26 weeks if it’s a layoff job loss. Then Federal funded extensions of up to a total of 99 weeks are available IF the Feds fund and authorize the extensions and the State agrees.

Hope is all we have. Maybe a new party will come out of this. These elected officials think they are doing a service by being in Congress. I wish every ballot had to have -” none of the above” as a countable vote.

Oh, what a shame, it would be so much better to throw the US Public off a cliff, under the bus, and into hell, than mess with the; carefully negotiated agreement between Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden.

If a RINO like Cantor is voting no you can believe it has no chance to pass. I watch CSPAN this morning and it looked like most reps were agains’t it. Even some Dems.
