Skip to comments.Taliban likens US Afghan role to Vietnam War (IOW “cut-&-run”)

The Taliban Wednesday likened the planned withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan to Americas pullout from Vietnam, calling it a declare victory and run strategy.
They want to flee from Afghanistan just as they turned tail and ran from Vietnam, the Taliban statement said. When America faced utter destruction in Vietnam, they came up with the formula declare victory and run and want to utilize the formula of transfer security and run here in Afghanistan.

If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it. If we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war.
Will 50 years be enough?
With this current government, with this current “strategy” yeah, it’s past time to leave. The blood and money spent there is pretty much wasted.
I just think what’s the government’s done of the past 10 years is trained the instruments of their overthrow. The battle tested patriots will be useful in the coming “troubles”.
That’s what both the POTUS and the Taliban want you to think.
The taliban is correct.
War ends in only one of two ways. Either the agressor is destroyed or the defender is destroyed.
We as a nation have not had the will to win a war since we nuked Japan.
This holds especially true when fighting against moslems. They are commanded by their scriptures to fight until they win or die. Our job is to make sure they die, yet we won’t kill them.
As long as there is a living moslem, the war in afghanistan will not be won. The only way to win is to kill every last man, woman, child, dog, camel etc in the country and stop any more from coming in. Afghanistan via the taliban attacked us and we let them get away with it. What damage have we done to them? How have we punished them at all? Why does a nation such as afghanistan still exist?
Until we get a backbone, we will never win another war.
BTW, I’m all in favor of pulling all of our people out of that hell hole. And then nuking it until it glows at night
We’ve got the nukes. We may as well use them.
(BTW, this is yet another reason why carter should rot in hell. He killed the neutron bomb program.)
We have few options at this point, and none if them good. The U.S. pursued a weak strategy for ten years. The public didn’t have the stomach for stronger measures then; it certainly doesn’t now. The best you could pull off to buy another ten years is a decreasingly engaged presence where we increase our payments in cash and arms to the Afghan government (and Taliban) in exchange for them leaving Bagram mostly alone. I don’t know that anyone, left or right, is really enthusiastic about that idea.

That’s not how Moslems fought in the Six Day War. Their will to fight was quickly broken.
If the Taliban are right about anyone, it is the USA’s left-leaning leadership. Otherwise, saying that the Taliban is correct is siding with them.
You can blame it on the left all you want but America hasn’t had the stones to prosecute a war effectively since WWII.
We fight to a standstill and then negotiate with our “allies” as they pick off our soldiers.
The left took over ever since the end of WWII. Why else did they go after Joe McCarthy, dumb down our culture, and institute every other left-wing bit of “progress” since then?
The GOP pretended to be the conservative opposition ever since that war ended, too. The masks slipped several times over the course of the decades (e.g. Amtrak, EPA, OSHA, interstate highways and airports all funded at the federal level), but it was never the truth. The illusion sure lasted a long time, did it not.
Perpetual war is another gorilla in the room that is costing the GOP dearly but nobody wants to acknowledge it.
The GOP-e. Nobody wanted to prolong war on the conservative side, did they? Winning was far preferable.
True. The fact that Congress has abrogated it's authority and responsibility to formally declare war since the establishmeent of the UN is no coincidence either.
I never wanted to go in.
The biggest problem I have is I cannot trust anything the feds say..

For once, I think I would be more than happy to give the Taliban some advice on their public relations campaign.
Instead of saying that the US left Vietnam to avoid being militarily defeated, which is laughable, the Taliban should proclaim what *really* happened.
“Just as the US Democrat party betrayed their Vietnamese allies, abandoning them and cutting off all support, leaving them to be conquered by North Vietnam, so too, is the US Democrat party planning to abandon Afghanistan and cut off the money and weapons it would use to stop the *inevitable* return of the Taliban government.”
You can just imagine the dog stroke the Democrats would have in reading that.
You cannot give Freedom to a people who have no desire to have Freedom for Themselves and Generations to come!
Excellent point. Then they were fighting against a people that were more than willing to kill every last one of them (and did kill quite a few). The moslems knew it was either stop attacking or islam would be wiped off the face of the earth. So they stopped and proceeded to lay in wait. They were still fighting, they're just not blatant about it.
If the Taliban are right about anyone, it is the USAs left-leaning leadership. Otherwise, saying that the Taliban is correct is siding with them.
If they are not correct than why does mecca still exist? Islam attacked us on 911. Mecca, and medina at a minimum should be nothing but glowing radioactive wreckage. But there were very few voices (I was one of them) calling for us to punish islam. We'll have to nuke them eventaully, may as well get it over with now.
That can arguably apply to Afghanistan, but to a great extent not South Vietnam. Though its (US-installed) government was worthless, many South Vietnamese still had considerable nobility.
The ARVN fought for two years after the US left and the North invaded, before they basically ran out of supplies and had to surrender. And this was in the face of the North having virtually unlimited supply from the Soviet Union.
I will add as a note that the US Army was so incredibly bitter about the Democrat congress abandoning Vietnam and the men they had trained, that they went to extraordinary lengths to insure that the Iraq army would be set on a path of success ASAP. The US Army *assumed* that a Democrat congress would betray the Iraqis just as they had the Vietnamese, and wanted the Iraq army to prevail even if they were betrayed.
