Connecticut lawmaker wants names of gun owners to be made public

Lawmakers in Connecticut – still stunned from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting – are moving forward with legislation that could make public the names and addresses of 170,000 handgun permit holders in the state.

The measure, introduced by state Rep. Stephen Dargan, is the latest effort to clamp down on guns in Connecticut. If passed, the bill would reverse a 20-year decision by state lawmakers to keep the personal information confidential. The legislation would make the information fair game under the state’s Freedom of Information Act.

Dargan told FoxNews.com on Friday the measure was not intended to pit gun control activists and pro-gun groups against each other. Instead, it’s “to get a broader discussion going on gun issues and mental health in the state.”

Critics say being able to obtain the names and addresses of gun permit holders is an invasion of privacy, but others argue that people in the community have the right to know who owns a gun and who does not.

In December, an upstate New York newspaper came under fire for publishing the names and addresses of gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties. The story inspired heated reactions among readers and gun groups, who traded jabs by posting personal information about the newspaper’s employees online.

The actions highlight a growing backlash against gun owners after a string of shooting in the last five years, which includes the massacres at Virginia Tech and at a Colorado movie theatre.

Since the Newtown, Conn., shooting last month, gun owners across the country say they have been vilified and ostracized. Many argue lawmakers are using what happened in Newtown to advance their own political agenda, but Dargan says it’s not true.

“Obviously, something needs to be done,” he said. .”

How about a public service where all folks in Connecticut who have tested HIV+ have their names and addresses published. More deadly than handguns. Real public safety issue.

I'd also like to know how many HIV positive guys are collecting disability (bankrupting Social Security) and I'd like to know what restaurants they work at...

The CDC has the lists - we pay for the CDC - so let's put the information out there.... It's all part of the public record ...

Do they post such information for child molesters?

I’m sure they would like gun owners to wear a red star also.

Good Japanese samurai movie to see, it is call the Sword of Desperation. It is about a samurai used in a political intrigue and in the end betrayed. When surrounded by household samurai he served with and ordered killed by an official serving his lord, the battle was well performed. If a newspaper published my name and address, and it resulted in a home invasion to steal guns and the death or injury of my love ones, the newspaper will taste what the sword of desperation is going to be like. No mercy to staff and management. Even the pregnant staffers and temporary workers will not be spared.

The addresses (since he probably owns more than one, or has some in the name of his life partner) and phone numbers of Stephen Dargan should be published on billboards. What a grandstanding asshole.

Thanks MinorityRepublican.

Yes that’s true, but it does not tell them who has a CCW permit. Each State is different and each County is different. Denver politicos wanted the names of CCW in my County, Sheriff told them “NO WAY”.

I’ve got a CT carry permit and I don’t care who knows it. Don’t worry about the pit bull mix if you choose to break in, your real worry is the armed retiree who’s home waiting for you.

ok. Thanks. If a burglar used this map to rob a home, they may be disappointed to find out a law enforcement individual lives there.

I’ll make a point to see the movie, if it can be rented.

Seems like a very bad storm is on the horizon.

Even peaceful - sane - honest - law abiding people have a breaking point. These asshats need to quit pushing. There is no rational or justifiable reason for them to continue to try to break our country’s back.

The first shot that is fired - the FIRST SHOT - that is traced directly to the infernal b@stards who released these lists - will be the shot heard round the world.

And when it is fired, all bets are off.

The measure, introduced by state Rep. Stephen Dargan,...

Publish his pic, the names and pics of his family members, his address/es, phone numbers, Google Earth street view of his home/s, his daily schedule, daily schedules of his family members, etc.,...

Someone needs to make a map of all of the non-gun owners with this information. Turn the tables for once on these clowns.

Ann Coulter suggested the government be required to release the names of all the woman who have had an abortion. As she put it “other mothers might like to know that their playmates mom thinks it’s ok to kill babies” ...

That’s clever.

The first question to ask him, since Adam Lanza didn’t own a gun, why does he think this would have helped?

Connecticut, my former home state and place of birth is a good place to be from. 06896. 06840. Adios. Deer ticks, geese and socialists.

There needs to be a serious investigation made on Litchfield massacre. Nothing made/makes sense except the result: GUN CONTROL FRENZY. Holder/Obama’s FAST & FURIOUS failed but they had not given up on demonizing ballastic weapons, our tools for self-defense .

America has accepted their cohesive disinformation strategy. Challenged?
