Boehner Coup Attempt Larger Than First Thought
Roll Call ^ | 1/6/13 | Jonathan Strong

Posted on 01/06/2013 1:17:04 PM PST by Nachum

A concerted effort to unseat Speaker John A. Boehner was under way the day of his re-election to the position, but participants called it off 30 minutes before the House floor vote, CQ Roll Call has learned.

A group of disaffected conservatives had agreed to vote against the Ohio lawmaker if they could get at least 25 members to join the effort. But one member, whose identity could not be verified, rescinded his or her participation the morning of the vote, leaving the group one person short of its self-imposed 25-member threshold. Only 17 votes against Boehner were required to force a second ballot, but the group wanted to have insurance.

Even with 24 members, the group would easily have been able to force a second ballot round, but the effort was aborted in frenetic discussions on the House floor.

“There was an effort to get to a particular number,” said one Republican member who voted for Boehner but was familiar with the effort to oust him.

Someone probably threatened her with another great magazine cover. Or threatened to NOT give her one. Hard to tell anymore.

Your post is reprehensible. Adam Lanza and only Adam Lanza is responsible.

Why don’t you backstabbers leave through that gate and go form your own damn party. Sensible conservatives are sick and tired of your extremism.

I don’t believe this, especially since we have a competing narrative directly from one of the founding participants in the effort.

But there are a lot of people with egg on their faces who proclaimed there were 2 dozen votes against him, and he was going to resign.

It didn’t happen, and they have to say something to pretend they were “right”. We are becoming a nation of fortune-tellers, mistaking prediction for reality.

Yep. Most of Willard’s rats have run in between the walls for now. They’ll start scratching when it gets darker.

A while back I made a post that said nothing the GOP does will stop the true believers.

In the last 6 months, they have trashed the conservative base, demoted their own members, Pushed a documented arch liberal, cut funding to one Pub candidate, allowed another to lose a seat through inaction and today, they come out and flat admit that with enough votes, MORE than enough votes to dethrone the worst GOP speaker to ever hold the seat, they reelect him knowing the base is furious.

Anyone willing to stick with a party that does a fraction of that, and FIGHT THOSE WHO OPPOSE THAT CRAP is not anyone I want on my side of the fence. I will never understand why they are not run out of conservatism on a rail.

When you think about it he did get 98% of the Bush tax cuts put into effect and now the rats are forced to agree that the Bush tax cuts, which they demonized for ten years, are really a pretty good thing

They've admitted no such thing. What they perceive is that the idea that the problem is that the rich haven't been paying their "fair share" has been accepted by the Republicans. They are already making noises about raising taxes still more, since they now maintain that they didn't raise them enough to make a dent in the deficit, as we knew all along. But since there was only $1 in promised cuts, per $45 in increased taxes, they indicate they don't think spending is the problem.

I understand your point. And, the almost certainty that a third party movement would mean a Dem victory. But, as with Independents today, a third party could choose who to caucus with. In my opinion, this would give conservatives much more leverage as a coalition than what they currently have within the Republican Party. Something to think about. Need to try something different n my opinion. Btw, how about a more civil tone? Maybe pour yourself a drink or something :)

Nothing is ever good enough for your purists. What you fail to realize is that most conservatives and Republicans are not on your side and never will be. Even you people can’t decide who is and is not a “real” conservative. If you did start your own party, you would quickly destroy it with infighting accusing one another of being impure. You people will never get near the reins of power.

I want one of the defenders to explain in detail why it is that when you intend to dethrone a disaster...and you have MORE THAN ENOUGH VOTES to dethrone the disaster, that you do not dethrone the disaster because 7 votes more instead of 8 votes more isn’t enough.

Before another GOP defender makes one more peripheral excuse, I want to see them explain this.

Just one logical explanation. .Wanna bet they will ignore the issue? Or attack the messenger as usual?

I gotta tell ya when I hear about class warfare, it was all Bush's fault, the war on women, Hipanics, etc., etc., all made up issues by the hard left I am angered. To think that we here at the New Media with all the time we have were unable to quell or neutralize any of these issues to help get rid of the worst commie administration ever in the history of the country is sad. I feel like I have not done the job.

I feel like the New Media is lacking in its effort.

Depending on the old media, the drivebys, to be fair and balanced is useless. Unless we can stop the lies that come out of the axelrod inspired media machine and get the job done ourselves we are simply not getting the job done.

I hate being uncivil. It's frustrating for me to see our side so disorganized when they have nothing but slime on their side yet they come together so easily around nothing but made-up issues. Here we are carrying the weight of the country and we can't seem to get together on much of anything.

We should be coming together more, IMHO.
