Musburger Criticized for Remarks About Starís Girlfriend During Title Game
New York Times ^ | January 8, 2013 | MARY PILON

Posted on 01/08/2013 7:04:40 PM PST by ConservativeStatement

On Tuesday morning, commentary on the broadcast of the Bowl Championship Series national title game between Alabama and Notre Dame included words like “creepy,” “awkward,” “uncomfortable” and “heteronormative.”

The subject was not Alabama’s 42-14 victory, but comments made during the game by the ESPN play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger regarding the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A J McCarron. In the first quarter, ESPN showed McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, who was sitting near his parents. Musburger called the 23-year-old Webb, a former Miss Alabama, a “lovely lady” and “beautiful,” and said to his broadcast partner, Kirk Herbstreit, a former quarterback at Ohio State, “You quarterbacks get all the good-looking women.”

You won't be seeing many women's faces on Current TV anymore.

heh...

On a lighter note, while we’re on the subject of chic... er, sorry, *ladies* and the championship game: here’s an amusing piece regarding the allegience of nuns — ALABAMA nuns, that is...

Okay, I get it, it is "creepy" and "awkward" for a an older man to notice that a younger woman is attractive.

Now, celebrities and such can look and comment on women in the most knowing way because they are also young or famous. For instance Hugh Hefner at eighty some is fine with marrying a girl young enough to be his great granddaughter.

At one time it was taboo for children to be aware of the opposite sex. Now it is reversed and only certain people are allowed to notice a pretty girl otherwise everybody gets "uncomfortable".

I heard that comment in full. He may have been bit effusive, but who cares. All that time when there is no action on the field has to be filled somehow.

So predictable. Along with this representative of the "perpetually angry and aggrieved womyn," the metrosexuals and homosexuals also took offense with what Musberger said.

The game was over at half time. To keep the audience, maybe they should have continued scanning the stands for other good looking women.

Let's face it, the majority of college football fans are normal men who enjoy looking at beautiful women.

“heteronormative”

This word sounds shockingly intolerant for the champions of tolerance. This guy had the audacity to assume heterosexuality was a normal option? How dare he! If the rump-wranglers demand we view their preference as normal, why doesn't the, uh, fabulous pump, fit the other foot as well? [facepalm]

Had to look up this “big” word from the article:

“Heteronormativity is the body of lifestyle norms that hold that people fall into distinct and complementary genders (man and woman) with natural roles in life.”

Wow I guess the broadcast WAS really offensive!

(In all fairness it was a bit creepy coming from Musberger. The gal could have been his granddaughter)

Sure, it’s permissible, but in this particular instance, I just felt sorry for the girl. It came across as creepy to me.

I’m an avid college football fan, so I’m quite used to Musburger. I’m not sure what it was, but THIS time I was uncomfortable when Musburger spoke about the girl’s appearance. It reminded me of creepy Chris Matthews (in a weird sort of way) with his fascination for Obama.

I don’t think I’m usually offended when men notice pretty women. My husband has eyes, and I don’t mind him admiring beautiful women most of the time.

Musburger was different this time...at least it came across that way to me. Sorry if I disagree with others here. It’s not earth-shattering news. Any chance we can agree to hold different opinions on this instance?

What Mussburger said seemed very normal to me and very obvious to anyone with normal eyesight who was watching the game.

Shows you how far out of whack "politically correct" has gotten.

I guess being beautiful and being singled out for it is UNACCEPTABLE to the "dim-bulbs" of America.

Actually sometimes it’s not cattiness that causes women to be critical of one another. I don’t really know what you’d call it but we do the same to ourselves when we look in the mirror.

I wouldn’t assume the poster was a woman. We men have some ambiguous feeling about fake boobs ya know. We all appreciate the effort and the effect but no one, man or woman, enjoys being fooled.

As for split ends, that comes from watching 50 years of shampoo commercials.

“You quarterbacks get all the good-looking women.”

Is the converse true? Do all the good-looking women get quarterbacks?

Perhaps a more important observation would be to question if there are enough quarterbacks for all good-looking women or are there enough good-looking women for all the quarterbacks.

My observations indicate that successful men get the good-looking women or good-looking women get the successful men.

There was that Joe Namath and Farrah Fawcett ad:

Athletes are handsomely rewarded in terms of finances and fame and with that comes the increased attraction to and by women especially famous and/or pretty types. It isn't limited to QBs. Just a couple of many examples: Mike Modano, one of the best hockey players in recent years, was (or is) married to an actress:

And another, Mike Fisher, married Carrie Underwood.

I've read Musburger's comments, but haven't heard them in recorded form. Unless his inflection is really off, I can't see what the big deal is. Musburger gushed a little. So what? A few people felt uncomfortable. Earth-shattering.
