The next two weeks are going to get tense inside the headquarters of the New York Times.
Last month, executive editor Jill Abramson told the staff shed have to cut 30 positions from the news division to buffer against financial losses from rapidly declining advertising revenue. Reporters and editors would be offered buyouts, she said, but if she didn't have enough takers in a months time, she would be forced to go to layoffs.
As the January 24 deadline approaches, only two people, assistant managing editor Jonathan Landman and reporter Jacques Steinberg, have formally announced their exits.

Unless NYT goes conservative and prints the truth, they are doomed to failure. Never happened in the past; can’t see it happening now.
For years I’d read the New York Times on the morning subway ride to work . . . and then one day I realized it was just a lot of pretty sentences with no underlying substance. I switched to the New York Post as my morning paper, and have been happier and more informed about the news that matters ever since.

I worked in a place that did exactly that, I came in a few years after the bloodletting.
