The following is a list, provided by the White House, of executive actions President Obama plans to take to address gun violence.
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11. Nominate an ATF director.
12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.
Oh yeah, you're dead meat. Not only you but your whole family gene pool are SOL. Once you get the mark of the O on you, that's all she wrote. You'll be lucky to get a slingshot permit!
Step 1: meet with your lawyer and set up a gun trust (either title 1 or title 2 NFA)
2: put all of your firearms on a schedule A or B within the trust.
3: When doc or any agent of the state ask if you own guns, legally and ethically you can say, "My wife and I do not personally own firearms". ( because the property is a separate trust asset)
:-)
I live in Texas.
So this list REALLY means nothing to me.
You have my sympathies...
Even as fond as he is of ruling by executive orders, he knows that he can't ban any class of guns without congress making it into law, so he's depending on congress to enact a ban that meets his approval. An “assault weapon” bill is sure to be introduced in congress ASAP and will probably pass in the Democrat controlled Senate, but I don't think it will make the grade in the GOP majority house. If it does a lot of GOP congresscritters will be out of a job after the 2014 election, and that would include mine if he votes for ANY new gun law. We are already denied too many (one is one too many) of our 2nd A rights by unconstitutional laws such as LBJ's 1968 Gun Control Act, enough is enough.
The left thinks everything that falls from Obama’s lips is a pearl. They won’t criticize a thing.
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
What is a school resource officer??
Maybe they can make Federal Agents “resource officers”?
Then it would be time for the Feds to practice their "corralling and kettling" techniques. They will push the crowd into a confined space and trap them there until the laws of nature take over and everyone needs to find a restroom and some food.
If you really plan to do this you will need some outside support, not part of the crowd. Everyone attending should be prepared to spend 24 hours without outside food/water, in case the Feds do this. Plan to bring plenty of food and water, extra batteries for smartphones, so that you can outlast them. Plan to urinate in street drains as necessary, etc.
Don't bring a gun or even a facsimile of a gun because you'll be targeted first and probably shot on sight.
Harry Reid payed him a visit and ‘splained politics 101 to him.
I love the smell of milquetoast, smoke and mirrors in the morning.
BUT I won’t be so bold as to say that it smells like victory.
We are a long way from that.
“What do you do? What do you tell your doctor?!
It’s none of your f**k’n business.
He bought time & we got some, too, in the bargain. Good enough for today.
Forewarned is forearmed, no pun intended.
Is this Wednesday or the Friday Silliness Thread?
There's so much stupid shat in this, it's hard to tell.
FMCDH(BITS)
So will Walmart start selling ammo again?
“What is a school resource officer??”
Frequently an off duty cop or other person qualified to provide security.
Usually they are armed.
Exactly. The devil is in the details. We don’t know what any of this actually means yet.
Correct me if i am wrong, but none of these would have prevented the Newtown massacre.
These actions are a result in the belief that there is a pandemic of people with assault weapons shooting up people.
...which is not true.
Where is the $500 million dollars going to come from to pay for these suggestions?
I’d wondered if this would be a defusing move: let the opposition whip themselves into an embarrassing frenzy, then announce nothing controversial.
New EOs can be issued any time.
And AWB2 is well on its way to Congress.
Crapped their undies, more likely. This is a big nothing, at least short term. I do worry about the mental health and privacy stuff - we STILL don't know everything in Obamacare - but that's going to take them plenty of time to take care of...CDC studies and all. Meanwhile, bigger issues will present themselves, like the country being broke. I don't think that the Dems or the Pubbies have forgotten 1994 or 2000 yet - when gun owners took Dems to the cleaners and promoted Algore to ex-Veep and High Priest of Gaia.
Number 5 concernms me.
If anyone lives in a disaster area, then the police can confiscate first in the ANTICIPATION that once confiscated it will be impossible to have it returned.
Essentially taking without compensation.
Guilty until proven innocent.
Lapierre already proposed something better than that, i.e., put armed officers in every school. Of course that wasn't acceptable to the gun Nazis because it wouldn't do any harm to our RKBA. Not only that, it would probably be successful which is the last thing the antis want. They're willing to sacrifice our children if that's what it takes to get a total gun ban.
Low information voter:
-free obamaphone!
-obama money to pay our rent!
-free houses!
-MSM: free booze!!!!!!
Nothing on that list will keep guns out of the hands of our feral population.
Should work well in Fast & Furious
If my doc ever asks, I will take a page from the military, “I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of firearms in my resides or possession.”
Huh? WTH does health exchanges under Obamacare have to do with guns?
Some nurse practitioner thinks your "weird", no gun.
I was never a Romney fan, but what happened today would ABSOLUTELY NOT happen under a Romney administration.
And the Marxist hasn't even been inaugurated into his second term yet. We're in for a helluva ride over the next four years...
Got 300 rounds of 9mm and 150 380 today. They were out of 22 value packs in 2 stores. First time I've seen that.
Quite frankly, most of this list is 1) lets study this or 2) lets look at that. For those who wanted the president to actually do something, all he did was put on a good show. There is very little of substance in this list. It looks like they took some presidential aide’s list of to do’s and published it.
Hey, George P. Bush wants a piece of the action soon. Haven’t you taken stock of that list of losers the Republican party has advanced? George H. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain and recently Romney. Every single one of them was and is a RHINO.
Yep! #4 is going to turn out to be quite the hidden gem via your doctor or otherwise:
Expect to see broad new categories of people prohibited to own firearms. Non-violent misdemeanors, DWI, reckelss driving, minor drug offenses. Hell, maybe even bad credit or bankruptcy! And like Lautenburg, it'll be applied retroactively and a felony offense for non-compliance.
Absolutely none of these proposed “regulations”, NONE of them, would have prevented Adam Lanza from doing what he did.
This is just a power grab, pure and simple.
That's the very first thought I had. They're throwing a candy bar on the table when the anti-gun crazies want a full course meal.
It will be interesting to see how the MSM tries to spin these 23 "executive orders" to the public in the next 24 to 48 hours.
The NRA has #7 covered and no tax dollars are needed.
That'll teach me to put my money where my expectations are. Dang. Oh well, fun ahead! ;-)
1,2,3,4 Are all about increasing the information in a “Federal background check system”. Only information enumerated and approved by Congress should be allowed to be in that database.
5. We need better laws and penalties preventing unlawful seizure. There should be time limits on returning guns and the criteria for not returning one needs to be crystal clear. And there should be a quick and inexpensive appeal process to challenge any findings preventing gun return.
6. Providing background checks for private sellers may not be a bad idea. But it should require the consent of the buyer. And Congress should regulate the retention of any data collected in the process. Background checks should not be allowed to become a defacto method of gun registration.
7. Education on safety is okay but they should be prevented from promoting gun registration to states in any way.
8, 15 Safety reviews are fine. Regulations requiring private owners to have locks and safes is not.
9, 10, 14, generates useless reports.
11, 12, 13 were things they were probably going to do anyway.
16 Doctors shouldn’t be allowed to keep a record of whether people have guns in their homes. Doctors can provide gun safety information to homes of children, but they don’t need to ask to be able to do that.
17 is nonsense, I doubt there are many health care providers confusing health privacy with threats of violence.
18 Is a “school resource officer” an armed guard? If so, fine. Maybe they can double teaching a shooting class.
19 Got to stop those Bible clingers! Actually law enforcement should be working with houses of worship to keep them safe. But this one needs to be watched that it doesn’t become oppressive against houses of worship. Especially in light of Homeland’s security stance on Christians being terrorists.
20, 21, 22, 23 are all focusing on mental health. We do need to make it easier to commit a dangerous person, while at the same time, making it harder to use commitment as a means of violating a person’s rights. We made a mistake turning the mentally ill out on the street. This shooting could have been avoided if the mother wasn’t having to jump through hoops to get her son committed.
I can understand your concern, but you must also realize that they didn't need this tragedy/gun 'violence' thing to do what they intended to do anyway. They planned all along to amass all that information for one thing----control!
They could give a rat's patooty about doctors sharing information more efficiently. It's about billing, it's about singling out people, it's about 'classifying' people, and then using that information to control people, period.
You're joking, right?
ding...ding...ding...
as i read the list, its all about implementing bambamcare parts and ramping up the disqualified list...
the 'under the radar' stuff isnt going to be telegraphed with the vocal pushback weve seen the last few weeks...

>>Hope all the conservatives who stayed home (or voted for some third party loser) in November are pleased with themselves today.

I have said for SOOO long — the perfect is the enemy of the good (or, in this case, the not so awful).
“I AIN’T GONNA VOTE FOR NO ROMNEY-CARE MAKIN’ RINO!” was the response I got (and the occasional ping to JR crying to Daddy that the bad man — me — was making them butt hurt). And then they present flawed math and flawed logic why throwing their vote away was NOT a vote for obozo. The emmaculation II results and the soon to be illegal but allowed nationwide gun-grab say otherwise.
Yes, I blame them. As should we all.
Had the stay-at-homes held their noses and voted for Romney, obozocare would be a few days from repeal and guns settled unmolested in holsters and gun racks in homes of patriots across the country.
Get ready for them to talk a good game but when it comes down to it they will capitulate rather than be the next Ruby Ridge.
I live in TX — I am pretty safe since I know our Government will fight 6 ways to Sunday to keep my 2nd Amendment Rights and the gummint is too scared to come after REAL push-back (if not, the Nation is through and we can AGAIN thank those people).
Is #18 going to put armed guards in schools?
“Hope all the conservatives who stayed home (or voted for some third party loser) in November are pleased with themselves today”
Nicely put - keep saying that. There are alot righteous people on FR who think that they are above it all.
Maybe the TSA can do this?
Look at all the “fun” they have at airports.
