The Ugly Side of the Southern Belle
NY Times ^ | January 15, 2013 | Blain Roberts

Posted on 01/16/2013 6:05:31 PM PST by Bon of Babble

From 1921, when the contest began in Atlantic City, through World War II, only one woman representing a former Confederate state won the competition. Then, beginning in 1947, when a woman from Memphis earned the top honor, the fortunes of Southern contestants rose precipitously. From 1950 to 1963, seven southerners were crowned (each served the following year), including back-to-back wins by Mississippians in 1958 and 1959 — though southerners made up only one-fifth of the possible winners.

These were, of course, the years when black Southerners opened a full-scale campaign against Jim Crow, prompting a bitter backlash by white Southerners. White resistance began in earnest in 1954, when the Supreme Court issued Brown v. Board of Education, its decision to desegregate public schools.

Three southern belles were sitting on the porch fanning themselves one hot and humid day.

The first belle says to the other two “you know, my daddy, he loves me so much, he bought me these thoroughbred horses”.

“That is just wonderfull” says the second southern belle. “How nice” says the third.

The second belle says to the other two “ you know, my daddy, he loves me so much, he bout me a nice porche car”.

“That is just wonderful” says the first belle. “How nice” says the third.

And so they fanned themselves for awhile longer until the first and second belle thought to ask the third “doesn’t yo daddy love you at all?

“Why of course he does” says the third belle, “ in fact my daddy loves me so much he sent me to the finest finishing school”.

“Finishing school?” Cried the first two belles, “and just what good is that.”

“We’ll” said the third belle, “I learned how to get along with unsavory people at finishing school”

“Oh really? And what kind of learning is that” blustered the first two belles.

” the most important thing I learned” said the third belle, “was to say ‘how nice’ instead of ‘F—k You”

I wouldn’t have read the article if I knew it was about race.

I’m weary from the incessant talk about racism.

Yankee? Is that the best you got for this VMI educated Southron?

Show a bit more class when people are laughing at you. It will do you some good.

In New York City, all the fine people ride the subway and when they have to crap, they go between the cars and drop their pants. I suppose this is considered to be performance art in the big horse apple.

For those with white guilt I tell them that white people ended slavery on this continent and several others, so there is no reason to feel guilt. If someone wants to fight slavery they should go to the Mideast where east Asians are abused by Arabs. I believe some Asian nanny was beheaded just the other day.

Isn’t the NYT the same newspaper that endorsed Stalin’s actions while he was committing genocide? I see they haven’t changed, either.

Their star correspondent Walter Duranty did give a hearty endorsement of Joseph Stalin.
