3 injured after shotgun accidentally fires at N.C. gun show
CNN ^ | 19 Jan 2013 | Michael Martinez

Posted on 01/19/2013 4:18:57 PM PST by Theoria

A 12-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot accidentally discharged Saturday when the owner opened its case at a gun show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, injuring a retired sheriff's deputy and two other people, police said.

The gun owner, a 36-year-old man from Wilmington, North Carolina, was carrying the weapon through security at the show entrance and was unfastening the case on a table, authorities said. The owner planned to sell the shotgun at the show.

The deputy suffered a slight injury to his hand and was treated and released at a local hospital, said Joel Keith, chief of police of the North Carolina State Fair.

A 54-year-old woman from Benson, North Carolina, was being treated a wound to her right torso at a local hospital, and a 50-year-old man from Durham, North Carolina, was treated for an injured left hand, Keith told reporters.

"I want to emphasize that this is an accident," Keith said.

Wake County sheriff's investigators and the local prosecutor will determine whether to file charges against the shotgun owner, authorities said.

Detectives began interviewing the owner shortly after the 1 p.m. shooting, authorities said.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said he was unsure whether it was legal to bring a loaded gun on state fairgrounds.

However, when the state fair is held in October, it is illegal to bring a loaded gun to the fairground because of the large crowds, authorities said.

Investigators will consult with the Wake County district attorney's office about Saturday's incident, the sheriff said.

"This is state property. That's something we're looking into," Harrison told reporters. "It's early right now."

Just great. Perfect timing. And CNN has already picked it up, meaning the White Hut is already aware, and is planning to use this to clamp down on gun shows as "unsafe".

"See?", these idiots will bellow. "See? Private sales at a gun show are UNSAFE! You gun nuts are a PUBLIC THREAT!"

Just what we needed on Gun Appreciation Day.

Just damn.

Good point. Of course the answer is that there is an agenda to advance.

I was going to go to that very show today with my 11 year old son. Instead, opted to go tomorrow (to stock up on .45ACP HP’s with my favorite ammo vendor who frequents this show.....damned good gun show, by the way).

No charges should be filed, but the moron who failed to clear his shotgun before arrival should be bitch-slapped.

There is no such thing as an accidental discharge.

A negligent discharge is caused by either ignorance or carelessness.

The person can be considered ignorant, if they have not been trained.

They are careless, if they disregard their training.

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

I’m glad us Freepers understand the ridiculousness of how over the top society has become about being PC and oversensitivity to subjects. It’s ridiculous. Being offended seems to be the new fad. Anyway, back to the subject:

All of the new reports are stating that the LEO never touched the shotgun. So, I don’t know what the real story is. It would be good to hear from a witness because the following two portions of the article don’t mesh.

“A man identified as Gary Lynn Wilson, 36, of Wilmington, brought the 12-gauge shotgun to the show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds and was attempting to remove it from its case when the weapon went off shortly after 1 p.m., police said.”

Then it goes on to say:

“Visitors are supposed to allow security officials to check in weapons, Keith said, but Wilson removed the gun from its case before personnel had a chance to handle it. The shotgun was laying flat on a table when it discharged.

“I want to emphasize that this was an accident,” Keith said. “At the time, no employee, no officer had inspected that gun.”

So, the reporter isn’t giving a clear answer as to what happened.

Not an accident, negligence.

The early report on the story posted earlier was in error. This thread and the other one are stories on the same event in Raleigh.

Not just ‘loaded’; Chambered. Not just ‘chambered’; Safety OFF. 3 rule violations!

Not really.. When you consider the heavy traffic as a result of ‘gun appreciation day’, so far these accidents have been minimal.

Taking a loaded gun to a gun show - what an idiot.
There really are people too lame brained to be trusted with guns.

Ever been to the emergency room to get your hand or finger stitched up after you cut yourself with a kitchen knife?

Didn't go after cutting myself with a kitchen knife, but did make the trip after cutting the top of my knuckle off while cutting my husband's hair, to save money.;o)

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said he was unsure whether it was legal to bring a loaded gun on state fairgrounds.

Isn't that something the sheriff should know?

A first hand accounting from local forum member in attendance at the time, two idiots to blame here. First, the one bringing in a loaded shotgun. Second, the dimwit at the check point who failed to inspect the chamber and safety then proceeded to fasten a zip tie to the trigger. Ooops!

The media “somehow” missed this part of the story.

Didn’t realize that this and the incident posted earlier were one and the same.
Gotta figure anything that happens at a gun show now will be front page news. The media will do all they can to show the low-info voters that evil guns are just going off all over the place on their own.

I've been going to gun shows for 40 years. I have personally witnessed 4 guns go off during that time. Fortunately only one person hit in all 4 incidents, and that one was a security officer/cop trying to unload a .25 cal Colt pocket automatic some idiot had put for sale still loaded, sitting on a table.

There is no place in world more quiet than a gun show the first two seconds after a gun goes off. Everybody is waiting to hear the screaming. When you see blood on the concrete floor at a gun show it makes a memorable impression.
