No, Sidwell Friends School has no armed guards [We Obama critics were wrong on this one]
Washington Post ^ | January 18, 2013 | Valerie Strauss

Posted on 01/20/2013 6:49:30 PM PST by grundle

The National Rifle Association is airing a television ad (and has on its website this four-minute video) that says the private school that President Obama’s daughters attend, Sidwell Friends School, has 11 armed guards. It doesn’t.

In fact, it has no armed guards. My Post colleague Glenn Kessler, who writes The Fact Checker column, wrote about the issue here and quoted Ellis Turner, associate head of Sidwell Friends, as saying: “Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.”

Parents and students say they have never seen one either.

The president’s children are protected by Secret Service agents, which is required by federal law, but that is not the same thing as armed school resource officers.

The Fact Checker, who hands out “Pinocchios” depending on how accurate — or inaccurate — a particular story is, gave the NRA and its ad the worst possible rating, four Pinocchios. Whereas three Pinocchios are given for “significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions,” four Pinocchios are given for “whoppers.”

Guess I’m not a frightened little bunny.

100,000 schools in America. Care to do the math on the percentages of those that have had random mass shootings in the last 10 years? (excluding inner city gang violence)

Saying that they do not have armed guards is a bit dishonest, since it is only half of the story. As various posters have said, the SS is there, and they are armed.

It’s like saying “There is no gun in my left hand.” It’s in the right hand, of course.

OMG...we are our own worst enemy.

The flip side of Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals #4 "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules" is "We must hold ourselves to a higher standard."

Ok, I’ll split the difference here. The school doesn’t have armed guards. It has armed Secret Service agents.

‘You might as well claim that our troops shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns.’

They are not allowed to carry guns while on base. That is why so many people where killed in Fort Hood. They had to wait for the Base Police Officer to arrive. Yet these same victims are possibly the most highly trained AND experienced weapon carriers around.

Assuming Sidwell has some very wealthy and high profile kids other than the presidents girls this is not a carpool in the van crowd Our son attended a private school, two kids in his class had private bodyguards at all times, they were not politicians kids. The one family was Jewish with vast international wealth and their concern was that their kids could be targets for anti-Semitic groups as well as kidnapping for ransom.

However, it turns out that I, and many others here, were wrong about Obama’s daughters’ school employing armed guard.>>>>>>>>>>>>

The NRA video was correct, and this thread article is just disinformational spin designed to defuse the EFFECTIVE NRA video.

Thats not what Sidwell Friends school advertise when they want to hire a Security officer, they require Applicants must have a current SPO license( i.e. armed), or else they would not require the current SPO license, any former police officer with relevant experience would do:

This is verbatum from their careers page:

In the District of Columbia, only police officers and members of the military (in the course of their duties only) can lawfully carry loaded firearms. Thus, security personnel who work in an armed capacity must be commissioned as District of Columbia Special Police Officers in order to carry a weapon (this law does not apply on federal property, so security personnel who work in federal buildings do not have to become DC SPO’s, although their guns may not leave their building under any circumstances).

They security at Sidwell are armed, which is why their advertisement for a security opficer requires an SPO licence.

In fact, if the guards were armed, the secret service very likely required them to be disarmed.

That's what I'm thinking. Too many of America's political royalty go to that school not to have armed protection. I wouldn't expect the WP to dig too deeply for the facts either.

True. But why bother? One does not have to be an SPO to work as unarmed security in as DC private security.

To work armed in DC in private security, one has to have an SPO licence.

Thats the point I was trying to make. The attack on the NRA is bogus. Sidwell wants the option to arm its security officers, or does arm them.Their ad proves it.

“you can be an spo and not be armed”

What is so difficult for some people to understand? Many of the kids at that school are very high-value targets to bad people, and therefore are protected by armed guards wherever they go.

These parents ARE NOT going to just drop their kids off at the same place every day and leave them at the mercy of some nut off the street with a 38 Special.

The First Amendment permits the media to basically publish whatever they want - it DOES NOT require us to believe all of it - especially when it’s sheer lunacy and serves a political agenda.

...and finally, even if the school were willing to leave their kids TOTALLY UNPROTECTED (except for the times when a president has kids enrolled), would they really announce that to the world, via the Washington Post?

So who started this info in the first place? The commies themselves, knowing that they would spring the truth on us later?

Or did someone just assume they were armed. I hate when we bumble into this kind of stuff and repeat it without our own fact checking. Now the commies will accuse us of “lying” about the guards.

And what took this new info so long to get out?

see #5 below

General Order 308.07 effective Septemeber 28, 1993

3. The term “special police officer,” is any person who is commissioned pursuant to the provisions of D.C. Code, § 4-114 (1981) and other regulations which have been approved pursuant to this act, and who may be authorized to carry a weapon.

D. Special Police Officers.

1. Special police officers are privately commissioned police officers with full arrest powers within an area or premises which the officer has been employed to protect. The commission is conditional and is required to be renewed each year.

2. Special police officers may be appointed by the Mayor for duty in connection with the property of or under the charge of a corporation or individual requesting the appointment. Special police officers shall be strictly confined in their authority to the particular place or property which they are commissioned to protect.

3. Commissions issued to special police officers shall specify the following:

a. The particular place or property they are commissioned to protect (this information is normally kept in the form of a contract list which is available for inspection at the Security Officers Management Branch);

b. Any waiver of the uniform requirement;

c. Firearm authorization status; and

d. In the case of DCMR Title 6-A, Chapter 11, Section 1101.2, any requirement for storage or special provisions for transportation of firearms or other dangerous weapons.

4. Special police officers are normally in uniform as required by DCMR Title 6-A, Chapter 11, Section 1109, however, upon request a uniform waiver may be granted.

5. Special police officers may be authorized to bear firearms, however, they must meet additional requirements which includes completing an annual firearms training course.

You might consider David Kahane’s “Rules for Radical Conservatives” as a text.

FWIW: For the last ten years, I’ve been handing out Alinsky’s book to Republican candidates when I discovered they were being attacked with his tactics. I’ve never had one read it, even when I cut it down to just the actual rules. A significant number of those candidates are now out of office, and probably still haven’t figured out what happened to them.
