President Barack Obama is a big football fan with two daughters, but if he had a son, he says he'd "have to think long and hard" before letting him play because of the physical toll the game takes.
"I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," Obama tells The New Republic.
"In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."
In an interview in the magazine's Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.

I guess this is an admission that the Wussy in Chief will ABSOLUTELY NOT permit his daughters to serve on the frontline in combat. "Let someone else do it... too big of a physical toll."

All 3 of my kids played 3 sports in high school. My son and daughter who played soccer, basketball lacrosse and softball are suffering the effects as adults. The son who played football is pain free.
My 11 year old grandson who has tried a variety of sports just got into football and we’re all amazed at how much he loves the sport. He has wonderful coaches and it’s joy to see his enthusiasm.
Well, I am a female. And my girls have done martial arts (i.e. I want them to know how to kill barehanded.) Football was safer before all the padding (as another poster has noted, like rugby. I am all for rugby!) The science is coming out pretty clear on the repeated concussions. I assure you, this daughter of a Vietnam vet, former Marine wife is no pansy. I am also, unlike the resident, against women in combat.
There are more head injuries in soccer than football.
The realization that "if Obama had a son" will always be tied to that in my mind was actually my only reason for searching for this thread, heh.
I was wondering if anyone else had thought of the same, and obviously people have (well, I'm quoting you, and there are other posts). I can't help wondering when "if I had a son" will come up next.

The fix is in. Rush called it.
It’s part of the emasculation of men project.
If he inherited mom’s genes (not dad’s mom jeans) the kid would make a great lineman.
Dad wouldn’t let him play in the NFL since it is merit based and isn’t racially fair to white guys. And it discriminates against midgets and women.
But I’m sure he’ll change that for next year. The NFL must look like America. Just like obama’s cabinet and staff.
Letting your child play football in light of brain injuries is perhaps reckless. It's a game sometimes seen as the modern equivalent of Rome's games to keep the fat, dumb masses entertained.
Combat has real stakes. It's not a game. It's not to be entered into lightly. Women in combat is about adults choosing to pursue a professional military career on equal terms with their male counterparts on a risk/reward basis. You either respect them or you don't. You don't.
Worse you don't respect the importance of a parent in deciding whether an unnecessary risk is too high. Football will have to change to survive. I've seen too many freepers today comment a boy who isn't being beaten senseless for football is somehow less of a man. I look forward to the day that attitude is at best quaint and bizarre.
