Hundreds of job cuts stemming largely from the pending loss of two major federal contracts will begin soon at Monona-based WPS Health Insurance.
WPS filed notice with the state Monday that 451 employees in Monona, Madison and Wausau would likely lose their jobs starting March 29. That includes 250 people in Madison and Monona, and 201 in Wausau, where about 300 work now.
And there could be more job cuts coming.
Founded in 1946, WPS is Wisconsin's leading nonprofit health insurer. It currently employs about 3,600 people, including some 2,500 in the Madison area.

This a huge defeat for Obozo. Madison, Wi progressive capitol that has very little unemployment.
Wausau another area that has had some problems with unemployment, notice 300 employees and 201 will have no job. Years ago Wausau Insurance bought out by Liberty Insurance. paper mills having been declining throughout Wisconsin.
This will come back to bite Obozo on the backside.

WPS is a horrible insurance company. When they did offer individual policies years ago, they typically considered most procedures to be either medically un-necessary or experimental. These were procedures covered by Medicare, Medicaid and almost all commercial insurance. Apparently it became so bad that most doctors would treat WPS patients as uninsured and require payment up front instead of billing WPS. Relying on Federal contracts seems to have not worked out well for them either.
Good riddance to the fraudulent folks at WPS. Maybe it’s the only good thing to have come out of 0-care.
My husband has had WPS for nearly 10 years. It is still the most affordable policy out there for the self-employed. He has an individual policy.
In 2010, he had an accident resulting in amputation of two fingers at the first joint. They paid everything they were contracted to pay, were totally accessible and transparent at all times.
Not once has any provider dismissed his policy or complained about his coverage. WPS policy holders get a 10% provider discount at our local clinic, as well. He is nearly 62, has a history of kidney stones, gout and is on BP meds. Despite conclusions one could draw from his medical history, he is active, not overweight and his blood lipids and all other vitals are great.
I, OTOH, am on Medicare, which so far has paid little to nothing when I have had to use it. My supplemental picks up those charges. I was interested to see that an ER visit for a dog bite was billed at nearly $1000, of which Medicare picked up less than $50, while my supplement picked up $275 and no one asked me for anything other than my contracted co-pay.
YMMV, but WPS has been a good company for us.
