Howie Carr thread for the first half of Feb. starting with today's Boston Herald column, "Dear John, it was something you said"

"This is a great day for Massachusetts. This is the day John Forbes “Liveshot” Kerry stops being our senator. The governor, who was born in Illinois, is replacing the senator who was born in Colorado with an interim senator who was born in North Carolina who will serve on Capitol Hill with the “senior” senator who was born in Oklahoma."

Make of this what you will:

a) supposedly a big announcement 7:35 am today (Monday)
about the future of AM 830 WCRN Worcester

b) Cryptic message on Michael Graham page: It’s
coming 11 12 13 Truth

Theories include:
Graham to WCRN
or WCRN to Fox Sports

we’ll see

It was announced today that starting next week former WTKK host Michael Graham will be on noon to 3 pm
on WCRN AM 830 Worcester along with WESO 970 Southbridge, WBNW 1120 Concord, and WPLM 1390
Plymouth in what is being called the New England Talk Network

Too bad they can’t Jeff Katz for the morning drive. The current 830 morning line up is, well sorry, lame.

Yes..people in radio are guessing Graham is paying for the time, “brokered time”. WCRN prob can’t afford to pay him, so he would prob buy time then sell ads to pay himself back. The CRN morning show is Hank Stolz, the program director of the station. Maybe it’s in conjunction with
the Money Matters network...they can sell ads and
push Graham.

I think the new Graham show displaces a noon news hour by
Stolz, some brokered time hour long shows at 1, then
prog talker Jeff Santos brokered at 2 (so now Howie gets Graham for a lead in)...or is it Huckabee? The WCRN website is pitiful. Prog talk gets, shall we say, hammered in
New England. While it is on taxpayer funded NPR outlets,
commercial prog talk is only on fulltime stations in
Brattleboro and Bangor, the latter thanks to moonbat Stephen King...and in Boston itself it’s just about gone on the commercial dial (there may be a weak AM station doing Santos 6-7 am). But hey with NPR why bother...?

I find NPR very hard to take, outside of Car Talk and a few of the weekend shows, which I rarely listen to. And 99.5, for household background “elevator music”.

Yes...I go into a Hess station in N Reading sometimes late afternoons and the college-age help has All Things Considered on a portable radio, yuck.

I would guess the WCRN gig would make it hard for Graham
to fill in for Howie, unless he did a “double shift” (or got someone, who? to cover his reg one) and could do it via
a Net connection from the WCRN studios.

Diff with satellite feed? Don’t know.
I do know in terms of automation if someone clicks the wrong date on automation software (at least at the type WMWM uses, my station at Salem State) it runs through every PSA etc
and then ends with dead air.

Maybe sat. problem who knows.

Willie’s got so much to be thankful for
by Howie Carr
Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Let’s look on the bright side, the mayor of Lawrence said last night. But Willie Lantigua missed some of the obvious high points he could have bragged about.

First of all, a former state rep from Lawrence has already been arrested this year.

And it wasn’t him, it was Jose Santiago!

More good news: Lantigua has finally filed his campaign finance reports. OK, so they were two years late.

And do you realize that it has been one week — seven whole days — since one of his pals has been convicted of a crime?

That would be Wilfredo Laboy II, son of the political prisoner, former School Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy. He got the jail time, the old man did, but Junior got probation. All he did was lie to the grand jury.

Willie Lantigua pointed out last night that the majority of drug suspects in Lawrence now come from out of town. Not to mention out of the country.

“I ask you to join me in refusing to allow distraction to keep us from the job at hand.”

In case you were wondering, “distraction” is another word for grand juries.

Alas, Gov. Deval Patrick was apparently unable to attend. But he is a gracious patron to his dear pal Mayor Lantigua. On the way to City Hall, perhaps Willie heard Republican state Rep. Jim Lyons talking on the radio about how the state — Lyons’ constituents, people who actually have jobs and pay taxes — are forking over $152 million for the Lawrence school system.

Of course he didn’t mention that the city of Lawrence is also making its own contribution — $4 million. Lyons calls the city an “ongoing criminal enterprise,” like Lawrence isn’t an equal-opportunity mob.

Take Lennie Degnan, the mayor’s suspended-with-pay chief of staff. His father-in-law is an ex-con, Nick Rizzo, the guy who looted Paul Tsongas’ campaign account back in 1992. And he’s from North Andover. Lawrence doesn’t care about your native tongue, or the color of your skin, just the length of your rap sheet.

Just ask Deval Patrick. The mayor should have thanked Patrick for the “loan” of an additional
$35 million. I’m sure it’ll be paid back.

But look at how much Lawrence gives back — not just the votes to elect the fake Indian, but also, when his man Ron Bell allegedly drinks too much in Boston, who’s there to hire him off the waiver wire? Willie Lantigua, that’s who.

The mayor has much to be proud of. Think of all the arrested cops he’s still got on the payroll. And how about the three kids in the anti-gang program who were allegedly supplementing their income by sticking up bodegas?

What’s the big deal? There’s a word for it ... double-dipping.

Fri column ping. Note: as Howie mentioned he has another book coming out--Rifleman I think he said the title was, and I'm thinking that refers to Flemmi...he said he's going a diff. route to get this one out quicker....otherwise it would come out long after Whitey's trial. This will have lots of pictures too.

Is there method to his madness?

by Howie Carr
Friday, February 8, 2013

Is Whitey Bulger going soft in the squash?

I mean, if your only defense is that you had total immunity from the feds, conveniently given to you by a dead guy, then why would you start yapping on a recorded line about how you never gave the evil G-men any information?

In other words, you claim you had a quid pro quo, but you never delivered the quid for the quo.

“I bought (expletive) information, I didn’t sell it,” Whitey said Sept. 12, in a dogtrack-ready spiel to his younger brother Jackie. “I never gave them (expletive) information. Nothin’. Nothin’.”

Obviously, Seamus is still in Step One of the Five Stages of Snitchhood — denial that he’s a rat. Even to his brother, who is himself a convicted felon.

In his prime robbing days, Whitey didn’t talk on phones — wiretaps. Or indoors — bugs. Or in cars — ditto.

This conversation was recorded nine days after his 83rd birthday. He’d been in the can for 15 months, and before that, he’d spent 15 years sitting on a park bench in Santa Monica — Heaven’s Waiting Room, Left Coast Annex.

It’s to be expected he’s lost a little off the fastball, but why would he be spewing out this kind of nonsense to undermine his own already unbelievable defense? Unless maybe he’s laying the groundwork for his next defense — senile dementia.

You know who else this filing by the feds is bad news for? The dwindling band of Zip Connolly acolytes who think the bent fed was framed. Doesn’t sound to me like Whitey’s going to go to the mat for his old go-to guy, Special Agent Cannoli.

“I didn’t know that (expletive) John Connolly wrote all those reports.”

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Whitey’s partner in crime, Stevie Flemmi, was making the exact same complaints about his first FBI handler, H. Paul Rico. First he said he never said that stuff in the 209s, even though he was the only one who could have known the details. Then he said Wimpy Bennett must have said it — until Frank Salemme pointed out to him that he’d already murdered Wimpy Bennett weeks before the reports were filed.

Finally, Stevie admitted everything, but whined Rico had stiffed him on the informant fees he was due.

“You don’t get it,” Stevie told his co-defendants. “They gave us gold and we gave them (expletive).”

In this case, the expletive was his co-defendants. Stevie really was lucky to get out of Plymouth in one piece. Now he’s going to be brought back from Otisville to testify against Whitey. The trial is supposed to start June 6.

Once Whitey was the boss of all the “snow” in South Boston. This morning he sits in his cell in Plymouth and watches the other kind of snow fall.

Whitey’s got more than one blizzard headed his way this year.

Driving ban? Take a hike, gov

by Howie Carr
Sunday, February 10, 2013

Hey Gov. Patrick, didn’t your mother ever teach you about the magic word “please”?

You know, you’d ask her for something, and she’d say, “What’s the magic word, Deval?”

I guess she didn’t because I didn’t hear it Friday, when you ordered everyone in the state off the roads at 4 p.m. Like everyone else, I did hear about the $500 fine and/or one year in jail for violating your order, which you had said the previous day you probably weren’t going to issue.

I know, the bow-tied bumkissers are already falling all over themselves lauding you for your “wise” decision to shut down business statewide and arrest anybody who had the audacity to try to get home from work. But did it ever occur to you that at 4 p.m. Friday maybe half the state had only minimal snow? Think Nantucket.

If you had to order a driving ban, why not at 7 p.m.? Ninety-nine percent of the people would have been home by then. Do you really think a lot of people were planning to go out joyriding in the blizzard? Gov. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire “asked” her constituents to get off the roads by 7 p.m. No haughty orders, she just said she would rely on their “common sense.” But then you don’t have much in common with Maggie, do you, Deval?

Earlier this week, she vowed to veto an increase in the beer tax (it didn’t even get out of the legislature). You couldn’t slap a beer sales tax on top of the beer excise tax fast enough, remember?

Every moonbat wakes up in the morning hoping this is the day he gets to inconvenience, or hector, or lecture somebody else, preferably some “bitter clingers” who have to work for a living.

Friday was the day moonbat Deval’s dream finally came true. He out-Dukakised Dukakis. But the difference is, when Dukakis declared a driving ban, nobody complained. Because at that point it was necessary — people had been caught by surprise.

It was 1978, remember — no Weather Channel, no “models.” Nobody was caught unawares Friday. You could have picked up the news reports on the fillings in your teeth.

Myself, I’d hired a guy to drive me home Friday night. I was going to leave my car warm and safe in a garage in Brighton. But then he heard about the year in jail, and he chickened out.

So I called Veterans Taxi. At 5 p.m., Veterans called back and said the cops had just ordered them off the road. In other towns, the police were doing robo-calls, a chance to throw their weight around, too.

I wasn’t that worried driving home. I had press credentials, and if any cops had stopped me, I figured I would just tell them I was Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis’ son.

Can you imagine what TV viewers from outside New England must have thought watching us here in Boston these last few days? First you have a mayor talking about “deploring” plows in the “sea of Boston,” and if you have any problems, call “nine-eleven.” (Go ahead, check your phone for an eleven.)

And now my car is in the driveway, totally buried in snow. Deval, it’s all your fault. Can you come over today and help me dig it out? Please.

hmm...meanwhile McSCREAMER IS ON! Yikes!

I think Howie said he had to go to Cleveland for something, or was it somewhere else?

Howie set up howiecarr.us because he thought he was able to escape WRKO last year. Turned out he couldn’t. Maybe it’s just expiring or they let it expire?

OK I did a WHOIS search and it said howiecarr.us belongs to Larry Bruce. OK...now I remember. “Larry the Loner”, Howie called him on air. Tech engineer for RKO at one point; he even consulted for smaller stations like the one I’m on, on the North Shore (not now though). So Larry the Loner and Howie have ended a longtome friendship?

I looked up the site on whois, and it is owned by Larry Bruce. Larry is a longtime associate/cameraman/engineer, so it seems that they have had a major falling out.

Yes I did the same and I knew he was an engineer for RKO at one point (I remember a pic of him in the Herald, adjusting knobs etc.) and he was an engineer for my station WMWM Salem State (some engineers would do a whole bunch of college stations in spare time). I pointed out on a radio board (more than once) that Larry had a youtube video posted on howiecarr.us showing the Jerry Williams show, with Howie and newsreader Deb Robi in the next room, from 1988 or so. He clearly says he filmed the video and called himself the
“site administrator”.

I was racking my brains trying to get his name but as soon as I saw it on WHOIS I said, yes, Larry Bruce, and indeed some kind of problem. WHOIS says howiecarr.us expires in July.

Will Howie be back today and/or tomorrow? Heard McScreamer yesterday for a few seconds. My ears still haven't recovered...

Don’t know if Howie will be on today (vacation in Fla.? who knows) or not. Yes don’t know why he and Larry Bruce are no longer friends. Last year Larry helped out by finding stuff related to the Liz Warren Pow-Wow-Chow book via a library in Manchester NH (Howie did a column on it last yr)

meanwhile this from the Globe today, take it for what it’s worth:

>>We all know where Whitey Bulger fits on the criminal spectrum, but what about the political spectrum? Turns out he’s a Reagan Democrat who bemoans the state of both major parties. He dismisses President Obama as a radical socialist and Mitt Romney as a union-busting venture capitalist who likes firing people and shipping jobs to China. I don’t know why Fox is wasting its time wooing Scott Brown. Roger Ailes should give Whitey his own show.
