As an Ohioan and a conservative, I am in favor of Governor John Kasich's move to expand Medicaid. Kasich had opposed President Obama's healthcare reform law and many conservatives are up in arms over his proposal.

Kasich has shown himself to be a liar. I will do whatever it is that’s needed to throw him out of office.
So if the cause is worthy- in the eye’s of the beholder of course - then abandon conservationism.
You would be at odds with me if you lived in Michigan too.
Maybe you can convince Kasich to raise gas taxes too.
kasich is scared, plain and simple. obama has carried his state twice, he is up for reelection next year, and he only won with 49% of the vote last time.
You are right about Kasich running scared. Also, this article is short, whiney, poorly written.
Yahoo’s main criteria for conservative authors? Be liberal.
I don’t think she is a conservative. She is trying to make political points to save her a$$.
Give the states money now, take lots more away later.
Wow, you’ve found a way to blog pimp and pretend it’s from a news source that HAS to be excerpted. Kinda like the examiner blog, but dressed up as “Yahoo News.” Nicely played.

I’m at Odds with My Fellow Conservatives; I Support Kasich’s Move to Expand Medicaid

Only in your mind are you a Conservative.
Kasich is going to lose for sure the next time he runs. The libs wouldn’t vote for him ever, and the conservatives won’t vote for him now, either.
Way to go Romney, I mean Kasich.
Its funny how Republicans got whipped in National elections but been doing pretty good in many state elections so many here assume that at the state level they can do anything they want.
Both Ohio and VA are on the edge of Democrat takeovers. If so they get to redistrict the House seats for those states/
Don’t call yourself “conservative” if you want to expand government.
Sheesh.
Hey, here’s a novel idea.. how about CONSERVATIVE legislators at the federal and state levels pass a law where health insurance can be sold across state lines, the rates will drop because of competition and people will then be able to afford INSURANCE (which means it covers against extra-ordinary or catastrophic loss. (as opposed to “insurance” that pays for every little flu shot... does your car insurance pay for oil changes??!!)
The Republicans should have done this in Bush’s first term. Health INSURANCE would be affordable by now.
You miss the point. Kasich has two options:
A: try and persuade Ohioans to believe the right things.
B; pretend to belive the wrong things because he thinks most Ohioans believe the wrong things.
He chose B, which NEVER EVER WORKS for Republicans. Oh, it looks like it will, it is the easiest thing to do in the short term, but it never actaully works.
Rove is in favor of this kind of strategy,
State lines would be very helpful, but it would take a lot more than that to make it affordable. Mainly, allow more freedom and flexibility of both providers and customers.
Without TORT reform, insurance still wouldn’t be affordable. Maybe a bit lower, but not affordable.
I am not going to reply to everyone individually because most of you are saying the same thing. I am pro-life, against gay marriage and pro-gun. I am a Christian Conservative. Just because I have a heart, which many of you seem to be lacking, doesn’t mean I have abandoned my conservative values. Do you know what it’s like to live without health insurance - especially when you are working and paying into the system? To be told, “NO” you earn too much to qualify for medicaid? Probably not.
“I’m a life-long Republican, but.....”
Arizona already has expanded medicare and free coverage for the uninsured who come in through the emergency room, if they cannot afford to pay. So, Jan Brewer has been persuaded to take the money since not taking it would change nothing.
I have good news for you!

Get real ~ Virginia is on the edge of a Republican takeover. We never quite solidified the existence of the Republican party until quite recently. It was Democrat for over 80 years with NO Republican party anywhere. The place was a one party dictatorship under the personal rule of the Byrd family.
Eliminate Medicaid!!!
Pay your own way in life or quit taking up space on this planet!!
The medicaid expansion is going to be a tremendous disincentive to people to find a job or a better paying job because of the high cost of insurance on the Obamacare exchanges. It would be a poor trade off, make a few dollars more, but lose the medi-caid coverage, costing you $4,000 per family member.
Single payer is inevitable.
A lot of people are already on state Medicaid. Which will be scaled up for the middle class.
I believe conservatives who oppose the move to expand Medicaid are blind to the ramifications of living without health insurance.
Due to health issues, I am on Social Security Disability, Medicaid being my secondary insurance. The insurance has been a tremendous blessing in my life and I don't know how I would live without it.
Forget the fact that SS is in the red or that we have 70 million on Medicaid. This woman is the perfect example of how one's values can be co-opted by dependence on the government. It matters not that she is getting far more out of the system than she ever contributed or that we can't afford to pay these benefits. The country is bankrupt. She wants to expand the program that costs her nothing. She is a taker.
Good luck with it.
Conservatives are a minority in a center-left country.
John Kasich is going where the political winds are blowing. And with Congress’ failure to repeal ObamaCare, this was in the cards.
We are being pushed forward to the left by forces over which we have no control and little real power to resist.
Is it your firm belief that every American should have a plentiful supply of food? Or adequate shelter? Or a telephone? Or a car?
Is health care a right and an obligation of government to provide it? What level of medical care should be provided?
If you have a job and don't qualify for Medicaid, you need to set your priorities as they relate to your income. For now, you can buy health care insurance with various deductibles to lower premiums. Maybe you have to cut back in other areas so you can purchase insurance. And if you have a medical emergency, you can always go to an ER for treatment.
It is easy to have a heart if someone else is picking up the tab for your charity.
He took a few stands the last few years and Dems easily mobilized and got OH voters against him as Ohio is barely purple.
Voter ID was one where he got clobbered.
Medicaid expansion looks like ‘free’ stuff courtesy of uncle Obama.
He's not going to convince Ohioans’s to personally go without health insurance esp when it looks free to the state.
I admit this is disappointing but remember : when Rush+CO make demands that all these Purple state Rs should give up their seats for one ‘principle’ or another that he cites, he makes mo money the more Dems take over. That is the nature of his business.
This is disappointing for sure, but re-districting is key to Pelosi taking back the House..
No, we're all super-rich and evil here...just like you said. No one here has ever suffered one bit, at all.
If you had ever spent any time here, finding out about people before judging them with your super-scantimonious attitude ("Just because I have a heart" ...), you'd find out that plenty of Freepers are suffering in this economy, just like yourself. Plenty of them do not have any health insurance, just like you.
However, unlike you, they don't think that because they lack the money to pay for health insurance, that someone else should be forced to pay for it. You call that "having a heart"...they call it theft of someone else's money. Your use of compassion is a shield you use to justify taking money form others to cover your own needs. That is what children do. Real conservatives have enough self-honesty to see it for what it is.
You're getting way ahead of yourself, at least in Ohio.
Redistricting won't come about for another almost 10 years and the make up of the Apportionment Board won't be decided until the 2018 statewide election.
Republicans currently hold every statewide office, all Ohio Supreme Court seats except one, and have supermajorities in both the Ohio House and Ohio Senate.
Poised for a Democrat takeover?
Thanks, I Didnt know that. Didnt they cave on voter ID and some other fights?
Still missing a point. When a Republican Governor acts like a Democrat, it’s far more damaging nationally than when a Democrat governor acts like a Democrat - especially related to anything Obama Care.
Kasich knew what Ohio was before he ran for Governor. If it cant’ be governed conservativally, then it does our side only harm for an R to govern it like a D. I don’t want to hear shit from him on Hannity or anywhere else any more.
Indeed. For whatever reason, the Rs did not pass a voter ID law during the past session but I expect it to come back this one.
You listen to Hannity??
As dumb as he is its worse when he gets Morris or Rove on. I gave him up years ago esp when he called for GM bailout ~ New year 2009. And he was pushing Steele for RNC on his show ~ 2008.
Back to Kasich: he either believes that medicare expansion is good for his state residents, or he is scared Dems will do to him what they did to Romney, or both which wouldnt surprise me.
I live in Maryland and the single party Dems get anything they want:
raised sales tax, income tax, booze and smokes taxes, and are calling for raising gas taxes next.
They passed the Dream Act and gay marriage.
The RINOs here in Maryland make Kasich look like a brave lion hero here and gave into raising taxes under pressure (they wouldnt oppose popular spending bills) after their single fluke win then got booted for lying about it, dont forget M Steele came from here as assistant governor (GOP) after he ran for Senate and he couldnt even get black votes here .
Hey, heres a novel idea.. how about CONSERVATIVE legislators at the federal and state levels pass a law where health insurance can be sold across state lines
Obamacare actually allows this. All that is required is that the states involved agree to allow the across-state sales. So, the real issue is why CONSERVATIVE legislators in different states aren't moving to do this.
However, unlike you, they don't think that because they lack the money to pay for health insurance, that someone else should be forced to pay for it.
Until they get really sick, and then it's off to the ER to get medical treatment on every one else's dime.
anyone who says we need more entitlements is insane
No, I don’t, but I know Kasich is on his show from time to time. And Maryland is not relevant to a Kasich conversation. Kasich ran his mouth about what a great small government conservative he was, but he has been weenied by Obama winning Ohio.
Again, he knew Ohio well BEFORE he ran for Gov - if he was going to be blown about by the winds of Ohio’s libs, he should have never run.
“It is my firm belief that every American should have medical care”
So you’re a socialist. Good to know.
“...it was a State decision and program. Federalizing a program is not constitutional”
The only problem with Obamacare is that it’s unconstitutional? Socialusm is a-okay—or a good idea in need of tweaking—so long as it’s on the state level? What else should states be doing? Banning profits? Requiring licenses for all businesses whatsoever? Confiscatory tax rates? Free three square meals a day for everybody? Free university education? Gubmint takeover of fast food joints? Mandatory wearing of unisex jumpsuits in public, so as not to stand out from your fellowman and possibly make others feel bad?
I’m just curious how far you go.
So conservatism consists of being against abortion and gay marriage and for guns? Everything else is a matter of the heart? I don’t know what you are, but it’s not in my book conservative.
“Do you know whay it’s like to live without health insurance”
Yes. I also know what it’s like to live without a car or nice clothes or steak dinners every night or a home of my own. I also don’t go around beghing fir other people to give them to me.
“especially when you are working and paying into the system?”
What system? If you’re working you can buy insurance, so long as you prioritize it. Unless you’re one of those uninsurables people are holding over our heads and for whose sake we are to overturn the industry, for some reason. Well, I hate to break it to you, but what they’re looking for isn’t insurance.
By the way, the dilemma you present is a perfect argument for why we should scrap medicaid, along with the rest of the Welfare State with its perverse incentives, not why we need to expand the bounds of socialism. As if we needed more reason than that we’re deadbeat broke.
So “moderates” are Rush’s bete noire because he wants Dems in power to boost ratings? He isn’t what I’d call the most intellectually consistent guy, and might slot his conscience’s throat to stay in power. But I find this highly incredible. You’re taking liberties to win the age-old victory versus purity debate. Go to any number of current Karl Rove thread to see how the lines have been drawn. Even Rovian establishment types, near as I can tell, haven’t yet advised Pubs to expand medicaid in the states to keep Dems from office lest they expand it ever so slightly more.
This from the guys who nominated Mitt Romneycare.
Private insurance is not affordable. It is very expensive and most people who are living near the poverty level certainly cannot afford it.
Don't forget about puppies.
Remember, more people receiving welfare from the government, more people who will vote Democrat.
Unless he is running for POTUS I don't see any benefit from his perspective for his saying no to this medicaid Federal Handout.
Seems that if he turned it down in effect blocking the working poor single Moms and their kids from health insurance from the Feds he would be despised in his state.
After all he can look back at the DC house Rs the past two years who repealed O care >20 times and then lost seats, and the law still stands without a scratch.
Ever see Eastwood's movie Letters from Iwo Jima ?
I recall they told the island Japanese commander that they had no ship support for them, no more weapons and they were taking away the remaining planes to Japan, and no more ammunition either, as Americans are preparing to invade the Island.
So what did they send? A message telling them they expected them to die with honor, and a recording of a group of Japanese children singing “little Island Iwo Jima, only you can save Japan” to keep them going.
You wont find Republicans willing to do that.
Talk radio is like that inspiring message, its their game.
