Ex-cop manhunt: Fresh tracks found in Big Bear snow
LAT ^ | February 7, 2013 | 3:27pm

Authorities in Big Bear have spotted fresh tracks believed to be those of a fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer wanted in connection with a series of shootings and are combing the area for him, a Fire Department official told The Times.

Big Bear Lake Fire Department Asst. Chief Mark Mills also said the burning pickup discovered on a forest road has been linked to Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, sought in connection with a series of shootings that have left three people dead and two wounded.

TV helicopters showed the pickup being readied to be towed from the scene.

The truck was discovered hours into an intensive manhunt for Dorner that spanned Southern California. Although sources said there had been multiple reported sightings of Dorner's truck in the Big Bear area on Thursday, the burnt truck was too badly charred to immediately confirm it was his.

Meanwhile, the mountain community locked down schools and closed the nearby Bear Mountain Resort as a fatigue-clad SWAT team walked through the woods, rifles drawn.

Sean Jacques, director of loss prevention for Big Bear Mountain Resorts, said that after the burning truck was discovered on a forest service road, local law enforcement told resort officials to keep an eye out for Dorner and provided a description of the suspect.

The full, un-redacted manifesto was posted on FR earlier. I’ll find a link.

I didn’t believe it at first because it sounded too much like someone parodying Democratic Underground, but it was real.

“If he had a plan, he wouldn’t have tried to unsuccessfully steal a boat in San Diego this morning.”

I haven’t been following this - but if that is so, I imagine that you are right that he is just another in a long line of nutcases that thankfully are stupid.

Just like the terrorists - I’m so glad that so many of them seem REALLY stupid. Of course being stupid and being capable with a firearm still makes him dangerous. But I doubt that he is the master assassin leading his prey into his well-thought out killing zone.

Maybe he set the truck on fire as a diversion. While cops are combing Big Bear Lake, he might have scampered off to LA.

Regardless of how this works out, lots of people, good and bad, will be paying attention and making notes on what works and doesn't for both the government and the ex-cop.

This is starting to remind me of an incident in Cortez, Colorado about ten years ago. A couple of locals stole a water truck and were heading to the Indian Casino, apparently to rob it, when a police car noticed them. They shot and killed the police officer, dropped the plan to rob the casino, and went straight to their getaway plan. They were well trained in camping and survival skills, and they dissappeared into some rugged canyonland. One of the largest manhunts in Colorado began and lasted months. One died in a shootout a few days later, but the other one vanished. That is, until one day years later, when hunters found his dehydrated corpse hidden in a canyon. He had shot himself within a few days of the shooting.

Living on the run in the wilderness takes a certain kind of person. I have camped in that area in Colorado, and it is difficult to be there alone. You might think you are getting away from your problems, but your problems follow you into the wilderness, where you can be alone with them day after day until they consume you.

I think his body will be found in the wilderness, a suicide.

"A mentally disturbed former soldier.."

I'm not buying mentally disturbed. I think he is just a normal liberal.

Right On! He’s long gone from the Big Bear Area. He had everything prepositioned like you said. He went down Hwy 18 and is probably in Las Vegas watching the whole search on TV laughing about the LEO’s and others about to freeze their bunnies off tonight and Friday as a major storm moves through the mountains.

Any cop would know that setting the truck on fire would bring cops swarming like flies on a dead possum.

So there is only one of two reasons for him burning the truck.

Either he wants to draw them to a trap....

Or he has pre arranged transportation to some place far far away and the burning truck is like the magician’s trick...look at this hand while the other hand does its thing.

I use to think shooting from a chopper was an excellent platform to shoot from but turns out there are a lot things working against you as it yaws, goes up and down and is hit by confused air, etc.

Watched several programs where they have contests shooting from a Helicopter and it’s very difficult.

Me? I’d use a Gatling gun, loaded with HE Uranium depleted rounds and be done with it
