President Obama will propose a 1 percent pay raise for federal civilian employees in the administrations fiscal 2014 budget proposal, the Washington Post has learned.
At the same time, the House plans to vote soon on legislation that would extend the current freeze on basic pay rates through the end of calendar 2013. The freeze was originally set for two years and scheduled to expire at the end of last year, but it was extended until a temporary budget measure expires next month.
When the measure expires, federal employees will receive a 0.5 percent raise for the remainder of 2013, unless blocked by congressional action.

How about this? Then unemployment get back under 4% and GDP is higher than 3%, and, inflation is back below 2%, then he can reward HIS constituency.
Seems like these salaries were bumped up quite a bit right before the “freeze”.

The public sector is the largest employer of a certain demographic. Hussein told them that he “has their back”. One of the few times he wasn’t lying.
Like everyone else who receives a big raise, 1 percent won’t even cover the medical insurance costs that rise yearly. Nothing really that exciting. I am glad to know that the civilian sector is getting back to giving fat raises again. I have a friend who works for Exxon and his raises normally are in the ten percent range with a fat bonus yearly. I don’t complain though and in fact happy for him because that is what he chose. Some people chose to work as a civil servant and not get caught up in the money which is fine too. Nobody makes big bucks in government unless they are in very high positions of power.
No worries it’ll be paid-for by the cut to military pay. /s

Here's my idea....Change their retirement benefits to use the average of their wages over the years instead of their wage at retirement.
I watched this game....an employee getting a huge raise....and then retiring 2 months later.
Psssst...the person who gave him the big fat raise was the best man at his wedding. Imagine that...
I propose an 10% DECREASE in pay for all Federal employees. They are already the most overpaid, underworked segment of our workforce, and I use that term “workforce” loosely. We could more than likely cut 50% of the federal employees and never miss them.

No question some government employees are worth what they are paid (although, except for the military, not a lot of them). But when those of us in the private sector (that still have a job), you know, the ones paying your salary, health benefits and pension, have gone without pay raises for five years, have taken pay cuts, have given up matching 401(k) funds and have had to pay more for health benefits than ever before, it is very difficult seeing ANYONE in goverment get a single dime for a raise. In fact, it sucks.
I think the government has made the pay issue intentionally complex to confuse the issue. there are step increases, colas, adjustments for where you live. So this would be 1% on top of that.
There is the 2010 scale on the wiki page. It would be interesting to see the 2012 table to compare what happened during the “freeze”.
Those of you who do must feel taken advantage of by the loafers.
The “cut” in military pay is purely “Washington Speak.” The “cut” being talked about is to reduce the proposed active duty military pay from 1.5% to 1%. Thus there is an increase.
That is the dirty little secret about congressional arguments over “budget cuts,” Congress puts in an automatic 5% increase to the budget each year, which they never proclaim and then they say “we have to increase the budget X amount, then when conservatives say “No” to the X amount of increase over the automatic 5% increase, the Democrat/Socialists scream “conservatives are wanting to cut spending and hurt (insert name of special interest group)” when there is actually being an increase over the previous year.
At present, if nothing changes, sequestration for the DoD enters into Tier 2, where Navy civilian personnel are looking a 22 days of furlough or a 20% pay cut for the rest of FY13.
They aren’t too sure if they are going to push the 1 day/ week or straight 22 day furlough plan yet.
This is just public posturing before the SHTF.
Ditto for Dept of Army civilians. 22 days of furlough beginning on or about April 1st. Probably 1 day per week. Of course, my branch has already lost 2 of 6 positions in the last 2 years; and the output requirements have not decreased.

How about a pay CUT for these government “workers”? Has anyone ever seen most of those bums do anything really worthwhile for any purpose? I realize there are a few exceptions, but generally government “workers” is a misnomer.
Is the government producing a product that is making a profit? Is the country as a whole making a profit?

The way the federal workforce was constructed was that they would, as a whole, be paid significantly less than the private sector. They would be compensated with more job security and good pensions. Federal employees are not overpaid. “Studies” that state the opposite are comparing apples and oranges. Federal jobs usually require more education than do private sector jobs, lumped as a whole.

You have it backwards: nobody is cutting active duty pay—it’s the DoD civilians—and only us—that are staring down the barrel of a 20% paycut.
What salary “bumpup?” Our pay has been frozen for four years.
There is no cut to military pay even proposed.

Wow. is that ever proof that nobody is getting rich being in government. I can’t believe how low those figures are. Once you take taxes and other items like medical insurance, these government workers are poor! The average government worker is a GS-6. So over 1/2 make 30 grand before taxes. I feel sorry for them and wished that they would have chosen the private sector where average salaries are 68,000 dollars. The life of a government worker changed in 1981. The retirement sucks now too.

The only thing more frustrating than facing the 20% pay cut is being forced to prepare contracts which pay sidewalk sweepers at twice our salary.
I guess "big bucks" is all in how you define it. Maybe for union sucks, the UAW is better, but not by much these days.
The reason the private sector is so low is because we don’t count every swinging dick like you folks do. We don’t have McDonald’s workers and other such types to lower our overall average. Heck you guys have a bunch of welfare folks dragging your average down. Government workers have no such types.....The lowest paid worker makes 21 thousand....your lowest wage earner is about 12,000....Cook the books and you will find whatever result you need. Let’s not even start with Education......That would really make you guys sad.

Well yes. I agree that people still continue to get promoted on merit. Just like a plumber’s helper progressing to apprentice to journeyman to master. Do you see something wrong with merit promotions?
