Wheels coming off... ObamaCare policies will cost more, cover far fewer than promised
New York Post ^ | February 10, 2013 | BETSY MCCAUGHEY

The Affordable Care Act is looking less and less affordable.

Start with the IRS’s new estimate for what the cheapest family plan will cost by 2016: $20,000 a year to cover two adults and three kids. And that will only cover 60 percent of medical bills, so add hefty out-of-pocket costs, too.

The next surprise is for parents who thought their kids would be covered by an employer. Sloppy wording in the law left that unclear until last week, when the IRS ruled that kids won’t be covered.

Starting in 2014, the law will require employers with 50 or more full-time employees to offer coverage or pay a penalty. “Affordable” coverage, that is — meaning the employee can’t be told to contribute more than 9.5 percent of his salary. For example, a worker earning $40,000 a year cannot be required to pay more than $3.800.

But the law doesn’t specifically mandate family coverage — and now the administration says that won’t be required.

I am not convinced Obamacare was designed to fail, just that the policy wonks who hurriedly wrote the 3,000 pages of the bill put together a Rube Goldberg plan that cannot practically function. The Democrats in Congress just voted for it without having read or even vaguely comprehended what was in those 3,000 pages... hence Pelosi's idiotic statement "we have to pass the bill to know what is in it" Hidden in the bowels of Obamacare was the provision for small businesses to issues scores of 1099 forms to their vendors...repealed by Congress after much pressure. The long term care provisions of Obamacare...quietly ditched because there was no possible way to pay for them. The excise tax on medical suppliers ...now being fought by some members of Congress who are finding out that the tax will likely send medical manufacturers in their state overseas. Again with the costs and details of the coverage more surprises.

Obamacare will without question fail miserably whether by poor design or as part of a plan to force the country to a single government run health care option. The big question is will the idiots who voted for the bill or the morons who re-elected Obama be happy with what they get. The low information voters who have been lied to with promises of less costly care, pick your own doctor, keep your own plan if you like it and expect the same choices in care you have today may soon see the extent of the lies. Will they be happy to pay more to stand in long lines for a 10 minute visit with a Physician Assistant, be denied care options and even see their loved ones fall victim to the death panels? Sooner or later all but the dumbest will see the extent of the lies.

It isn’t only the price folks, but when people see that they are going to get very little to NO care for the price, the wheels are going to fly off. The sad part is that the folks who have worked in doctors offices and such, are going to be the ones taking the extreme anger.

mrsmel, I don’t believe Congress is exempt although some of their staff may be. It’s my understanding that senior officials and President and VP are exempt. But I don’t believe Congress is because Section 1312 states they must purchase their plans on the exchange. Of course Sebellius can find a way to sweeten the pot for them, I”m sure.

The goal is single government payer for healthcare.

Which will result in government-run healthcare.

You are probably correct, I took it for granted that if they exempted their staffers, they exempted themselves, as they are never ashamed of being seen grabbing good things for themselves. They will have surprised me in this instance.

Interesting. I’m sure many of us would like to hear more from that conversation, but I understand your time is limited.

What I can’t understand is why people seem to be having such a hard time seeing this. There’s no point in focussing on the details of who is covered, who isn’t, and what it really winds up costing, when the point of it was always to get us to nationalised healthcare a la Europe. The even bigger point of it, and other legislation, is wealth redistribution from the makers to the takers. It all ties together and then leads to that one thing. Disarming us is also part of that, to disable us from being able to protect ourselves and our property.

Obamacare is a wealth transfer --

  1. from the private sector producers to the public sector parasites
  2. from whites and some Asians to blacks, Hispanics and other minorities
  3. from producers who only have as many children as they can afford to raise and properly educate to the irresponsible welfare people who pump out babies with abandon for the taxpayer to support
  4. from the money makers to the money takers
  5. O-care means thousands and thousands more Federal employees hired to administer it, eating up taxpayer money, with most of them being affirmative action hires

I don’t think this was hurriedly written.

Lefties have been drooling over this for decades.

All across the Beltway there are buildings chock-full of lawyers and poli-sci majors who are constantly on the phone with non-profits, action groups, lobbyists, etc. They sit and draft and redraft this stuff until all the jots and tittles satisfy the requisite donors and power brokers.

They may have cobbled it together from different drafts in their hurry, realizing it was finally time to put it in play.

As I read through this entire thread, your are the only one I see who has commented about the role of Congress in this. Last time I checked, the House still controls the purse strings. Yet, I've heard not a word about this Republican House refusing to fund this thing. Why is that?

The objective was for large companies to stop providing health care, and dump it on the State.

Which is why so many large companies are for this. It is a net gain to them, and their board members.
