(CNSNews.com) – A group of House Democrats labeling themselves the Safe Climate Caucus held a press conference today to warn that if Congress does not address global warming, the country could face dire consequences, including detrimental effects to California wines and an end to Vermont skiing.
One Democratic representative even worried that global warming could destroy the state of Maryland.
“If we do nothing about what is happening, it will destroy our economy, it will destroy our state, and it will have a broad impact not just here in this country but around the world,” Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) said at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Friday.
Representative Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) feared that global warming could damage the ancient forests and vineyards in his district.
“Climate change is going to impact my coastal district not just in terms of coastal communities and infrastructure but also the health of our oceans and coastal fisheries,” Huffman said.
“It will impact the great ancient forests in my district [and] it will even threaten to impact the world-class quality of the wine produced in Sonoma and Mendocino counties,” he said.
Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) worried there might not be any skiing in Vermont and that the state’s famous maple trees could also be threatened by global warming.
In introducing Vermont Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Blumenauer said Welch “comes from the state of Vermont that climate change is going to have – there will no longer be skiing and even the maple trees will be threatened.”
Despite the dramatic claims, Rep. Edwards insisted that she and her colleagues were not alarmists.
“The fact is that those of us who are here are not alarmists, we are not eco-hystericals, we’re not socialists,” she said. “We care about our climate and we want to do something about it.”

In 1999, the Vermont ski industry was worth about $0.8 billion. Let’s say it’s $1.2 billion today.
Even if global warming were true (which it’s not), does it make any economic sense to spend $10,000 billion or $20,000 billion to save a measly $1.2 billion industry? It would be far cheaper to give every person who wants to ski in Vermont a government voucher to go ski somewhere further north.
Besides, what’s wrong with a warming climate? A warmer climate would prevent thousands of people per year the horror of freezing to death. It might even make Vermont habitable.

I had been more or less ignoring the XL Pipeline issue, except the demonstrations scheduled on the issue in DC this weekend brought it to my attention again. I decided to do some research on the issue and was surprised to discover, that this is not just another pipeline like so many others we have. It is in fact far more likely to have breaks than pipelines carrying normal crude.
It pumps a substance, diluted bitumin (dilbit) which is about 70% tar sand bitumin and 30% volatile diluting substances. These are trade secret compounds that the companies will disclose which means in case of a spill, clean up crews and neighbors have no idea what kinds of poison might be in and air and water. The pressure, high sulfur content, acidity and quartz grain (sand) composition cause much more abrasion inside the pipes and greatly increase the rate of breaks.
Here are questions that need to be answered about this type of pipeline in an upcoming report. I particularly want to know the answers to the second and third issues.

Apparently the cost of clean up for a dilbit leak in water is around $29,000 per barrel, whereas conventional crude costs about $2,000 per barrel to clean up. The Kalamazoo River at Marshall had a major leak from an Enbridge pipeline. Two years later they are still cleaning. The cost at least 1/2 $billion, right up there with Solyndra. The article below explains technical details of the problems. The clean up industry had no experience with this kind of spill. Since this is for export, rather than US use is this really worth it?
At least the MD governor is trying to get permits for off shore wind energy. Unlike those lace curtain wannabees up in Massachusetts who are distressed that they might actually have to see wind turbine blades several miles off shore. There are other states like VA, NJ, NC, SC and FL which might also like to be able to do off shore wind, and these are mostly Republican states.
