He’s a real piece of work. From an interview about the film “Nothing But The Truth”...
...............................

FT:You must be happy about Obama. Can you believe the Republican pundits are already saying he can’t live up to our unrealistic expectations?

RL:I don’t think it’s unrealistic. I think he’s an extraordinary guy. I think he’s an extraordinary man. He was a year ahead of me in my high school at Punahou, although I didn’t know him.

I know nothing of him or his father but checking your link I noticed a live link to his dad at Wiki. There's not a lot on him but I noted this:

The Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards were created in 2000 to recognize cartoons that "enhance, explain and help direct the spirit and principles of the UN." The awards are worth a total of $18,000.

It's not specific but you could read into that that Rod's dad Ranan my not have been very conservative, Rod may have been raised a liberal.

If so it's a little strange he'd attend West Point but then maybe a little like W.C. Fields he was "looking for loopholes." I know that's a real stretch but neither he or his dad are dummies, it says Ranan was a member of Mensa. Whatever the case may be they don't come much more liberal than Rod Lurie.
