Long Island Teen Dies Of Mysterious Illness During Disneyland School Trip

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A 15-year-old boy from Long Island died of a mysterious illness while on a school trip to Disneyland.

Joseph Tutaj was one of 80 students from Seaford High School’s marching band who traveled to the Southland to perform at the Anaheim theme park last week.

“The first day at Disneyland he was okay. He went on Space Mountain and everything with us. Then the second day he wasn’t feeling well at all,” said band member, Michael Nicola.

On Tuesday, Tutaj was at the Santa Monica Pier when he complained of a high fever.

The teen was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and died 24 hours later.

Doctors told the boy’s family they believe Tutaj may have contracted a debilitating infection.

Tutaj’s parents said the 15-year-old trumpet player had no history of medical problems.

The LA County Coroner’s Office said the cause of death has been deferred pending further tests.

The boy’s passing is the latest in a string of tragedies to hit the Tutaj family.

His father, Robert, is currently battling stage four cancer, and the family’s home was destroyed in Superstorm Sandy.

Keep a watch on the US western states for a while. On the 20th of this month, a six year old girl died of unknown causes in Colorado, and the responders wore HAZMAT suits to check out her house. With decontamination afterwards.

It is not unrealistic to suspect that a very dangerous pathogen is propagating.

Some sort of systemic sepsis?
Pretty fast death for a young person? Probably an autopsy is next.

we have perverts and pedophiles running schools now

What in heaven's name does your comment have to do with this story? A young boy died for goodness sakes. You should be hanging your head in shame for somehow blaming the parents for sending him on the trip.

Have you ever been a parent? Or are you just one of those judgmental know-it-alls that has the audacity to tell actual parents what to do.

I've sent my son on chaperoned trips through his school. I trusted the parents that were chaperones. I knew them very well through scouting and just spending time together.

You must see a bogie man behind every tree. For your own personal health, let go of the imagined ones. Life sends us real ones soon enough (i.e. my dad's brain cancer, 0bama, et.al.)

My next door neighbor is a teacher. They are very conservative. His wife is a lawyer and they have three of the sweetest little girls in the world.

I feel sorry for you in your torment. There are still good people and there are good things in this world.

Put your broad brush away because it makes you look pathetic. Sorry, but it does.

If he and the family went through Sandy there is a large probability he was infected from the filth that came with the storm. It could have been incubating for some time. Lord have mercy on that family.

Yes, that is the one I’m referring to. But it could have just as likely been the TB outbreak in Los Angeles, or all the quiet epidemics that have been happening in prisons, or the vast number of antibiotic resistant infections that are cropping up all over the place.

I can see why first responders are getting a bit antsy about it.

Meningitis?

Sounds more likely than TB. Meningitis comes on suddenly and with a very high fever and can kill very quickly. There was a college student here in my area who recently died of Meningitis. By the time they took him to the hospital, it was sadly too late. And it really freaked out my niece as all her kids, including the one in college came down sick around the same time that story was being reported. The all had high fevers and were complaining about body aches including neck pain and she called the doctor and he advised waiting a few days before bringing them in. The doctor thinks they either had the flu or a bad chest cold but then they all got ear and sinus infections and so she ended up taking them all in anyway.
