Six-year-old Coy Mathis explains her predicament in the simplest of terms:
“I want to go to school. We play games at recess,” the first grader said Tuesday.
But the transgender girl is being home schooled this semester because she has been denied access to the girls’ bathroom at Eagleside Elementary School in Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, her parents say.
New York-based Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund attorneys said they filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division on behalf of her parents Kathryn and Jeremy Mathis, saying Coy has been discriminated against.
Forcing Coy to use a different bathroom than the girls, “is targeting her for stigma, bullying and harassment,” said Michael Silverman, TLDE attorney and executive director. He said that Colorado law prevents schools from discriminating against transgender students.

Children are stubborn but eventually give in. Of course the child in question has gone way off the deep end. Not sure if something else involved (Abuse) or parents gleefully rewarding/encouraging defying the norms. Either way, society should not be obligated to cater to any dysfunction that intrudes on the realm of individuals’ rational rights (This case the females’ lair of privacy in the bathroom); help yes, encouragement no.
Yes, I have children.
The more I think about this situation, it’s starting to become more clear to me.
Parents have triplets. Two boys, girl. They also have two other children (the article doesn’t say whether older or younger).
Children always compete for attention. This is especially true in families with 5 kids, and it’s especially true for triplets.
Lily (girl triplet) contracts meningitis at 4 months, and becomes disabled. So among the triplets, you have Lily, Max, and Coy.
From the photo, it looks like Max may be the taller triplet.
So who gets all the attention? Lily, the special-needs girl. Who’s in the middle wanting attention? Coy. How does Coy get attention? Well, maybe if Coy is a girl like Lily, he will get more attention, too.
Enter doctors and psychologists. Yes, if Coy is saying he’s a girl, then he must have that identity. You will damage him if you don’t play along. Yes, we’re experts. That will be $495, please.
Sound about like the scenario we have?
It doesn't sound like either of these to me. But I think I've started to piece together what's probably going on here. It seems to me probably more like a case of overstretched parents who don't know what to do and have been misguided by "professional" advice. See my post 83.

The child is not a girl and never will be a "she", even after the surgical multilation and chemical treatments are complete.
Jim, love ya, but do not agree that Jeff Winston is “pushing” it. He has simply asked an extremely tough-to-answer question, what CAN/WOULD/SHOULD we do about/with those who are truly afflicted?
I fully agree that the parents should be locked up if it can be proven that they caused the crisis; that is pure abuse.

I have some experience.
I know a child who is not in her mid teens. She wants to be a man. She is so fearful of her sexuality that she wants her breasts removed. She is eating her way into bulk and it is distorting her face.
She is the most controlling child I have ever met. She never backs down. Her drama is about control...all of it.

I suspect that you’re exactly right about the parents’ need for attention. Apparently, Jeremy Mathis, the father of these FIVE children, is working on an Associate of Arts Degree in Mass Communication; I have no idea how he is supporting 2 adults and five very young children, one of whom appears (from a photo)to be moderately to severely disabled.
Did anybody notice that the parents claimed that the “transgender” child wanted a PINK blanket, not a BLUE one? How would a child know that pink = feminine?
This child (Coy) may also crave attention and his behavior may have something to do with the tragic illness of his triplet sibling and the attention she gets, as well as the quality of parenting to which he is exposed.
