NY Post ^ | 2/28/13 | JAMES COVERT

This news may be hard for JCPenney investors to swallow.

After the flailing retailer reported abysmal year-end results yesterday, CEO Ron Johnson revealed that Penney’s spring ad campaign is being masterminded by Sergio Zyman — the marketing exec behind Coca-Cola’s infamous New Coke blunder in 1984.

Johnson, who said he has been working with Zyman since last fall, didn’t mention the New Coke connection in a call with analysts.

Guess I’d better get to J.C.Penny soon, and stock up on those heavy cotton T-shirts. That was all I ever bought at that store in my lifetime. They always had the best T-shirts be they called Towncraft, or Stafford.

Haven’t shopped at JCP in years, especially since the “gay” ad campaign started. Used to go all the time.
Just got in the mail a promo asking me to please, please, PLEASE shop at JCP!
No way in hell......

If they seriously wanted their company to succeed, they should fire their executive board, and hire:

1) A retired, US military Colonel, Army or Marine, who had commanded a winning combat brigade in combat, but was not political enough to get promoted to Brigadier.

2) A third generation farmer who has successfully managed a 5,000+ acre farm for 10 years.

3) A technologist-scientist, an industrial engineer, a structural engineer, and an Indian IT engineer.

Absolutely exclude anyone with an Ivy League degree, as well as MBAs and attorneys except from extremely conservative schools.

The New Coke ‘fiasco’ has been misreported for years.

I have an old Champion by Iver Johnson 16 gauge shotgun. I think it was the JC Penney house brand.

I'm with you. Their Tee shirts were the best, roomy for the size, decent length sleeves. But..
The last batch I bought(about a year or so ago) was not as good quality. Better than Jockey or Hanes but not up to previous standards.

New Coke wasn’t nearly the fiasco people like to think. Yes New Coke itself hit the market with a thud, BUT “Classic” Coke returned to much higher sales which had been dropping for years. Probably not the smoothest way ever to revitalize a brand but it did revitalize the brand.

Of all the clothing T-shirts are for some reason the worst, or the best for comfort, and those large, thick, heavy Towncraft T-shirts always were comfortable.

I imagine your experience last year, as I stocked up several years ago, thus haven’t purchased new T-shirts recently might have something to do with the cotton shortage year before last due the drought in so many cotton growing areas around the World. That drought caused a shortage of cotton, as well the costs were expected to be up. Seems to me that often the manufacturers skimp opposed to solely raising the prices too much. Price seems to be more important than quality, and comfort these days. I wonder why? /S.

I am convinced the New Coke debacle was cover for the switch from sugar to HFCS in Coke.

As am I.

That lineup excludes Marketing and in this day and age, marketing is king, like it or not.

Repeat: MARKETING IS KING

You can invent, build and distribute things, but if you can’t sell them, you fail.

Get rid of the dopes they're using now, and BTTT for your post at #24.

I read some time ago that a reputable consumer research company tested that 85% of people could tell a difference between Mexican Coke with sugar and Classic Coke with HFCS, and 80% of them preferred Mexican Coke.

Of course, even Mexican Coke now can contain up to 60% HFCS, so it's harder to tell now.
