As sequestration nears, federal workers brace for furloughs, vent anger at politicians
McClatchy Newspapers ^ | February 28, 2013 | By Lindsay Wise

WASHINGTON — As a single dad with seven kids living at home, Bill Blevins is used to pinching every penny.

The 48-year-old building engineer at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing hasn’t had a cost-of-living pay raise in more than two years, even as his rent and insurance premiums went up. Now he and other federal workers in Washington and across the country are bracing for possible unpaid furloughs as part of an $85 billion reduction in federal spending. Known as sequestration, the automatic, across-the-board budget cuts are scheduled to kick in unless Congress and the White House can reach a compromise by Friday.

“I am a registered Republican. However, I blame the Republican Party for this,” said Gregory Russell, a 48-year-old federal firefighter at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Russell calculates he’d lose about $1,200 a month – about 20 percent of his pay – if he gets furloughed. . .

What's left unsaid so far in this whole stinking sequestration mess (at least I haven't heard it said!) is that any of this so called "pain" that may be felt has at its root the simple fact that the FedGov has expanded so far beyond its Constitutional limits over many decades that it has created whole industries, towns/counties, and massive groups of the population that have become totally dependent on its continual growth.

And to mask this effect over time FedGov has been borrowing and creating massive amounts of $$$ that simply make the long-term problem even worse. Simple logic dictates that the over-spending has to stop. It needs to be pared back each and every year for the foreseeable future. The "pain" and dislocation has to happen, if we can't adjust to a small decrease in the amount of growth, we're done. (What this implies is that we can't even cut the rate of GROWTH to zero, in which FedGov would spend the same amount in a FY that it did in the prior FY. Think about that, you've got to first be able to get to zero growth before you even begin to do any actual "cutting." )

There is no other viable option; but it doesn't look like the country as a whole is anywhere near being able to accept this cold hard fact.

Actually, a lot of them do say that. It's just that those quotes somehow never make it into the news.

If another worker is 100% laid off, Russell and four others don’t have to have a furlough. I have a modest proposal for Mister Russell: You pick which co-worker to lay off so you don’t have to do a furlough. Your partner Bill? How about that guy who rides shotgun for the Rescue truck? Driver for the ladder truck? Maybe you’d like to volunteer for layoff yourself so the others don’t have to furlough.

No, Mr. Russell would rather whine about the evil Rethuglicans. I wonder waht his handle is on DU?

Amen

Just look at what obama has done to us, turning us against each other. We are a house divided.

Turning anger at what he and the democrat party are doing to ruin this country, against an entire federal workforce of decent people who get up and go to work everyday and try to maintain pride in their professional roles. Beth is the norm, not the exception.

We too looking at a 20% pay cut, just gonna suck it up and try to enjoy the extra time off finding free and cheap stuff to do with the kids

actually a bill was voted down yesterday that would have given obama expanded authority to use his discretion about where the budget cuts occur

ie, saltmarsh mouse studies could be defunded so teachers could keep their jobs

However, part of Congress voted it down because obama said he would veto it - the magic potus refuses to leave fingerprints on any decision about where and what to cut.

The sequester was crafted by zerO’s advisors to be so bad, so heavily weighted against DoD, they assumed the GOP would roll over and never let it go into effect

The other part of Congress voted yesterday's bill down giving Barry more power because they figured instead of forcing the man-child to do his job, he would just abuse it

In 2011 I and everybody else where I worked took a 20% pay cut, all bonuses eliminated, and 2 others had to be laid off. Those that stayed didn’t get to take that one day off. But that was solved the next year for me with a 100% reduction in work days and a 100% cut in pay, i.e. layoff, along with three others from the small firm I was working for.

Now having said that, my daughter works for the DoD, and and is getting a 20% cut in pay and furlough. But she was on a 4 day work week anyway, does she only work 3 days now and then 2 hours on her fourth day?

It is now up to the House to tell the president what must be cut in very specific line item language. It is easy to do, everybody knows where waste and unnecessary spending resides.

Let the House pass the very specific bill and then have the Senate reject it. That is the ir constitutional function. All this Fox News supported transfer talk fails to trealize just who is in control. It is the House.

she should be getting a briefing on how her furlough will be handled

If she is working 4 10-hour days then I imagine her hours will be cut to 7.5 hours a day (30 hour week) to match her reduced pay. At least she is not paying $4 a gallon gas to commute

Good luck to her!

hasn't had a cost-of-living pay raise in more than two years

No mention of the step increases, merit raises and/or promotions. The reporter picked her words carefully. If he had received NO raises at all, you can bet she would have said that.

Disagree, it is not up to “the House” (Boehner) to manage total budgetary
spending reductions, program by program, within a narrow window of discretionary spending...which I believe is only about 20% of the entire “budget”, or less. This leaves 80%of the "budget" (entitlements) untouchable- how does THAT get us out of the hole?

I say “budget” because there is no “budget”

Remember, the Senate has not exercised its role, and has not sent the House a budget for over 3 years.

This is why Boehner keeps saying the Senate needs to do its J-O-B before the House can do its J-O-B instead of making everything up as they go along.

This issue is way beyond a couple of Congressmen trying to make backroom deals at midnight while the adhd narcissist manchild plays golf and abuses Air Force One traveling on a perpetual campaign/vacation lifestyle

The cuts were a 10% reduction across the board but it ended up being a math trick because the “sequester” was delayed so the actual cuts are really much smaller. The “meat cleaver” was wielded by his handpicked appointees which means it is what he wants but it gives him plausible dependability, like when the DHS loosed the jailed felon illegals. Obama could stop this at any time by ordering his people to cut low-profile programs but he chose the path of most pain that offers his party the most photo ops.

My daughter also works for DoD. As of yesterday, they still don’t know she’ll be furloughed. She’s a GS-13, single and after three deployments to Afghanistan , she has a fair amount put away. She will probably lose ten percent of her pay. One of her co-workers is a GS-12, a single mom and is going to be hit hard by the furlough.

-——how does THAT get us out of the hole?-——

For the immediate present, the hole is not at issue. What is at issue is managing the sequestration cuts to prevent vindictive cuts.

It amounts to kicking the President in the ass and forcing benign cuts

The hole is to be delt with before the end of the month

hopefully even the MEdia is figuring this out
the only thing that may stop obama’s irresponsible vindictive madness is for the presstitutes to wipe the obama dribble off their chins, stand up, and cast the light of day on it

and be brave enough to stand up to what Bob Woodward is now going through

Hopefully Woodward wont have a “heart attacK anytime soon (RIP Andrew Breitbart)

FOX Business is on the story - for now

we must agree to disagree
It is the role of the Senate to come up with a budget, then
both houses approve it and potus signs it
Do you see what is missing her?

The bottom line. The budget.

When departments and agencies have budgets the department heads figure out where to prioritize and what to cut (or really here, to not be able to increase)

When there is no budget, there are no limits- everyman for himself. Take what you spent last year, add 8-10-20%, go for it.

Impossible for Boehner to manage the spending of every department and agency in the federal govt without even having a budget to meet

As far as I know no one proposed giving Congress line item veto over but it has been proposed for - and rejected by- the president

So this guy is looking at a $1200/month decline ,, probably looking at his net because that’s what people do , makes his gross about $6k/month $72k/year ,, back in all the benefits (about $40k) and taxes (maybe another $35-40K) and the fact that he’s basically a janitor that changes air conditioning filters in a spotless gov’t building with no restraints on purchasing the latest and greatest (easiest to maintain) equipment ... This guy has a SWEET GIG making approx $130k a year... yeah ,, and those “step” increases and merit raises that aren’t mentioned can be up to 25% of the base pay for the GS level he’s at.

First, I pray for Beth and all those who will feel the pain from these cuts and ALL the MILLIONS of Americans who are feeling the pain of the Obama Administration.

But, I want you to understand that we out here in the NON-Government workforce have been dealing with this crap for FOUR YEARS! She is just NOW feeling the weight of Obama’s Presidency!

Since 2009, my company has laid off nearly 50% of our national workforce - many of them VETERANS! We have not had pay raises in FOUR years (some of us VETERANS took temporary pay CUTS to keep our jobs (until times were better)), most government workers only got a pay FREEZE two years ago, we have taken on extra work and had to spread our coverage over several STATES as our co-workers were RIFed.

I know this sounds un-Christian-like to you, but welcome to the party! I, along with MOST Freepers, take no pleasure in others having to take a loss, but we do enjoy the SHRINKING of the US Government. Understand that we too have friends who are single, with sick kids, who have to pay bills, working two and three part-time jobs because Obamacare is making companies scale back their full time workforce! I have TWO of my kids (along with grand kids) now BACK home with me due to this Presidency - this pain isn’t JUST starting on March 1st, 2013 - it has been GOING ON FOR FOUR YEARS!! We ALL have problems, but the non-government tax payers cannot continue to pay more and more just so the US Government can have their GUARANTEED 8% (baseline) budget INCREASE every year! It has to END!

It isn’t that we don’t care, it is that we already are, and STILL are, feeling the PAINS that these employees are just NOW starting to realize! The sooner you, Beth and others realize how bad it really is out here, the sooner you, Beth and others will want to help fix this BEHEMOTH known as our current US Government!

And last, but not least, these were cuts in DISCRETIONARY spending, so it was up to each department to come up with cuts and plans to fulfill these cuts ordered BY President Obama! This Administration decided to IGNORE these impending cuts (thinking that they would just go away) and failed to plan for and implement them! More importantly, the Obama Administration is trying to make these cuts to be as PUBLIC and PAINFUL as possible - for political purposes - and you want ME to feel guilty because OBAMA is hurting people for political purposes? Sorry, but that simply isn’t going to happen!

Last thing: if people wanting to shrink the US Government makes you think about leaving the Republican party, then leave! The Republican party already has PLENTY of BIG-GOVERNMENT RINOs!

This is a hit piece that Pravda would be proud of. The blame is squarely on the traitor we have in the White House. May he, and all of his supporters, slowly roast in hell.

Well, well. Look at Miss Prissypants all butt hurt because I insulted his Obama-loving union buddy. Sorry, I shouldn't have said free, but taxpayer subsidized.

Looks like DU has a refugee. Only an idiot would think that $72k a year for a federal government firefighter is a good deal in the midst of the worst economy in the modern era.

You and the rest of the union thugs can suck it.

Oh brother. My entire family works private sector and are doing extremely well. My brother in law just received a promotion and moving from Tennessee to Indiana. My brother works for a private company as an Engineer and makes big money. I retired from the Navy after 24 years and loved the military so much that I wanted to stay with them. You can’t be in uniform your entire life even if you want to. I sacrifice making big bucks for loving what I do. Sorry you are so bitter.

You sound like a pretty reasonable guy when you aren't name calling and shouting 'liar' at people.

The last company I worked for started furloughs in 2008 where everyone took two days off per month instead of letting one person on the team go. Furloughs and cutbacks have been going on for years; I'm actually glad that government employees are actually experiencing what the rest of us have been going through. Seeing some federal employee making $6K a month bitch and moan about being furloughed 4 years into the Obama presidency (a federal employee who donated to Obama's campaign by the way, Mr. Gregory Russell) while he is still employed and still enjoys government benefits is a little too much to swallow.

I guess I expected Freepers to feel the same way, but obviously, some do not.

Here is my response to anyone who might be negatively affected by the sequester cuts because they work for the government. "Whoop tee f**king do."

Most of the time I am reasonable but I am scared. I do understand that the civilians have had the hell the last 4 1/2 years on their shoulders. I also am just pissed off at Obama and the media. We are going to be so screwed not because of sequestration but because they keep blaming Republicans and the stupid population seems to believe it. I apologize for calling you names and being nasty. To be honest, it is not directed at you but Obama and the media. Obama made this mess and fine we will lose some money out of the paycheck and then in his next breath, he sends 60 million to Syria. That just disgusts me.
