From the article:
"Still, while as many as seven people were detained, there were no arrests - a clear sign, department insiders say, that they had a deal with somebody to get the weapon back with no questions asked."
So they had to buy the rifle back from the gang bangers? Great police work.

detained, there were no arrests Interesting that kidnapping is not mentioned.

Looks like the universal background checks did their job again.
Again, for the radical left wing extremist demokkkrat scumbags. Point by point, how will any of the new laws proposed stop the bad guys? Crickets....... Smooth move difi. Your a real genius. NOT!

Either an extortion buyback or they simply traded for an AR that won’t trace back to the PD. Trade secret indeed.

I would guess this AR-15 since it was a police weapon had a full auto option.

So they know where the gangs are, they know who has weapons, they could track, trace and retrieve one particular gun... ???
No one is arrested? No other guns or weapons are retrieved? No questions asked? Tomorrow is business as usual ?
Sound like a Tom and Jerry cartoon...

Well, maybe not exactly “buy,” but something close to it. I personally know of an unfortunate and not too bright young fed who lost his wallet, creds, gun, cuffs, and hand held radio, because of his inordinate fondness for high-priced call girls. One of them absconded with the goods after he fell asleep one night. Local PD put word out on the street to return everything before sundown, or face a major across the board crackdown. Further, ahem, negotiations led to a no questions asked resolution. The young fed was told to immediately seek employment elsewhere, and explain to the wife and kids why he let the little head to the thinking for the big head.

I wonder how many confidential informants and undercover officers were burned in the process of getting that weapon back.

Funny they cannot solve all of the crimes so easily, perhaps the priority makes a huge difference, The don’t set much priority on anything stolen from individuals.

And if it were my property that had been stolen? Would there be no resources spared?

And if it were my property that had been stolen? Would there be no resources spared? Yes, SFPD would use all their resources to search your home for what they consider contraband, (like cash, guns, jewelry) and they would confiscate said "contraband" in the hopes you can't get to a reasonable judge within ten days.

That's almost as good as the Seinfeld episode when George is fleeced by a hooker after - thinking he was in for an afternoon of kink - allowing himself to be handcuffed to a bedpost.

Police carry/are armed for self-protection not yours. Police are under NO legal obligation to protect you or your property. They exist solely to enforce the laws. If within that enforcement duty they happen to protect you and yours then that would be a ‘benefit’. The police wanted that weapon returned mainly for THEIR protection and not necessarily the public’s. In the instance your property is stolen, no PAPER resources would be spared.

Some wit could cause great consternation by suggesting that the thieves didn’t steal *a* rifle, but a rifle rack full of rifles, that are still missing.
To: bravo whiskey
To make it more confusing, the early AR-15s were select fire, before they changed the name to M16. The AR-15 name came back with the civilian semi version.
