As Detroit beset by violence, debt and social woes prepares to undergo a historic takeover by the Michigan state government, the city of Atlanta could be sliding toward a similar fate.
Some are quietly wondering whether Atlanta is in danger of becoming the Detroit of the South.
The city has experienced an ongoing succession of government scandals, ranging from a massive cheating racket to corruption, bribery, school-board incompetence and now the potential loss of accreditation for the local DeKalb County school system.
For several years, problems of this sort have fueled political reforms, including the creation of new cities in northern Atlanta suburbs. Due to the intensification of corruption scandals in DeKalb, some state-level reform proposals could become national news very soon.
Super-white majority cities
As a result of the unsavory politics in urban Atlanta, northern suburban communities acted to distance themselves. Beginning in 2005, many communities began the process of incorporating into cities.
Thus far, Milton, Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Chattahoochee Hills and Johns Creek have done so.
These cities, after breaking away politically from urban Atlanta, have become so successful that a libertarian think tank, the Reason Foundation, has featured Sandy Springs as a model of effective government. The Economist has also applauded the northern Atlanta cities for solving the problem of unfunded government pension liability and avoiding the bankruptcy that looms over some urban areas. The new cities may soon be able to create their own school districts, which would free them even further from the issues besetting Atlanta.
While incorporation has been popular with residents of the new cities, not all of Atlanta is as satisfied. The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus filed a lawsuit in 2011 to dissolve the new cities, claiming they were a super-white majority and diluting the voting power of minorities.

Want to know the underlying cause? It’s due to affirmative action. When people are awarded education, private sector jobs, government jobs, and welfare based not on merit but on the basis of skin color, you will eventually have a degradation of resources and overall quality of life.
Listen, the free market is what works best. It orders supply and demand. Markets are distorted by government intervention.
Just take a look at the presidency of the United States. People voted for Barack Museveni Obama on the basis of his skin color and not on his qualifications. Does anyone in their right mind not know that Romney was eminently more qualified to run the executive branch than Obama?
Wherever affirmative action plays out, it will result in things being run based on the principle of what I call LCD - the least common denominator.
No different from States wishing to secede in European countries. Economic slavery is what the people opposing the secession are fighting for. They’re saying you must stay and pay for what we want you to pay for.
The cost will be dumped on all of us by way of the feds. If you think cities like Detroit and Atlanta are in bad shape, wait till the bill comes due for Chicago and LA.
Depends when the feds step in. Hopefully not with this clown in office now. I agree with you thats going to be the rout the left wants and when that time comes we’ll just have to decide across the nation if we want to be like the new cities outside of Atlanta.
I’ll take getto slums for a Thousand Alek...
Who would have thought that the greatest criminal in Michigan history would be a politician? /sarcasm
The 13th day of deliberations? My bet is that one or more of the jurors is going for “jury nullification” of a brother. It’s happening more and more.
Hopefully to be joined by many others once the books are opened in Detroit.
The stuff my neighbor's dog leaves on my lawn is more qualified to run the executive branch than 0bama.
Remind me again who’s in charge there.
The core issue is education, or rather the implementation of a spoils system in what is supposedly an education system. But private schools - or even individual parents operating on a do-it-yourself basis - are better at education than politicians are. Once admit that, and the solution is painfully obvious.Privatize education, and the worst likely result is that some parents wont provide any better education than their children are already (not) getting. But that would institutionalize individual responsibility - a concept which all too many people reject out of hand. Of course, as the article makes clear, there is already individual choice, hence individual responsibility, at some level:
the mere mention of losing accreditation has impacted the housing market in DeKalb, with at least one potential buyer directing his realtor not to search for homes in the county.
The only issue is whether individual choice can be an efficient scalpel or whether, for the convenience of crooks, the choice of real estate must remain coupled with the choice of school.
“Depends when the feds step in. Hopefully not with this clown in office now”
Yeah, for sure. As we go into the last year of Obama’s term we face the most danger. So, I think what he will be able to do, get away with, will depend on whether the GOP holds the House. Would be helpful if we (GOP) could take back the Senate too. But sadly, we seem to be plagued with “The Stupids” when it comes to taking back the Senate. But, hope does spring eternal, over and over :)
These are the people who have been or are in charge of Atlanta for the last 39 years and are responsible for turning it from a shining city on a hill into a super-ghetto hell-hole.
Privatize?! How about stripping out ‘schools’ from the tax base and have parents pay for their own brood?
No kids? no taxes. For everyone else, you take care of your own. I know, novel concept.
Makes about as much sense to send kids off to strangers to be educated, as much as it is to send them off to day-care to raise....and expect them to come ‘back’ in the mold of the parents (religion, politics, thinking, etc.)
I notice too the Black Caucus (talk about racist) is trying to keep the tax slaves on the plantation. You would have thought after 150+ years....
Hm?....I am reminded of the crony capitalists in “Atlas Shrugged”.
Very good point! Government K-12 socialist-entitlement schooling is just as much a part of fascism as crony capitalism. It is likely the **cause** of crony capitalism and the growing threat of tyrannous fascism in the U.S. Why?
Answer 1): Children who attend government socialist-entitlement and godless schools **will** learn to think and reason godlessly. They must just to cooperate in the classroom. They risk learning to throw their private religious belief in the trash can at the door to their public life.
Answer #2: Children in government owned and run K-12 schools risk learning that any voting mob powerful enough to give them tuition-free schooling is powerful enough to give them **lots** of free stuff. They risk learning to see government as their redeemer and savior.
We recently moved to some land in a “bad” school district.
When people said, “oh... you shouldn’t move there, the schools are not very good”, we said, “so?”
No way. Atlanta is a problem child, but it is no “Detroit.” Mostly because GA is a right to work state... And Atlanta has lots government offices.
