STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- Two Ohio high school football players have been found guilty of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl in a case that roiled a small city and stirred reaction from activists online.

True enough ... and well said.
Because it was their status as football players that led authorities at various levels to want the charges to just go away rather than dealing with them as required by their jobs.
The defense stated she had a “crush” on one of the boys and her friends tried to stop her from going off with them. She had already consumed alcohol. The prosecution countered with the fact that she reached the point she could not stand up and the one she had a “crush” on “shared her out” to his friend. He took advantage of her trust in him.
The girl made a chain of stupid choices, that doesn’t warrant what was done to her. Let’s hope this gives kids a “wake-up call.”
Because the Steubenville High School football team has a national reputation, and the fear/expectation was that their status as star players would either prevent them from being convicted or might mitigate their sentence. The first was proven wrong; we'll see about the second.

Really? Please clarify how pointing out how these two were “football players” then makes it appear as if every man is capable of this crime? Apparently adding this to the title would imply only FOOTBALL players are capable of this crime.
It was a crime. The football coach and culture did its best to sweep it under the rug. It should have been reported. What is your point exactly?
Because football players, especially in a “Football Town”, are protected and privileged persons; celebrities.
The football stars get their grades padded so they stay illegible to play, when they break the rules punish is light or non-existent, even violent crimes can be overlooked for high school and college athletes (no admittance to the hospital no foul).
I really believe that these young men have been conditioned probably since middle school that they are untouchables that can do no wrong. They believed that they could do whatever they wanted and no one would do anything about it because they always had in the past. I saw it when I went to school and I saw it when my kids went to school.
Having said that, since when did teenagers need parental approval to have booze parties. The Baptist preacher's daughter spiked the punch at our HS band Christmas party in 1953!

Am I the only one who thinks their fathers deserve a bit of horsewhip also?

Because Football is so revered in some small towns, those who excel at the sport are given a pass on lots of their misbehavior.
Sorta like a younger version of ‘the old boys network or club’.

Could child abuse also be involved? This wasn’t the first time this happened. Under age drinking? DUI? Why were not more charges filed? Why the alleged coverup? Not alleged in my humble opinion. This entire case has me really pi$$ed of. Way too many wrongs

DID I SAY THAT (NO!!!)? - The boys made a REAL BAD choice; in a climate of machismo. The girl made a BAD choice as well. I’m not going to excuse her; more choices like that and she won’t be likely to survive very long. . . Sandra Fluck notwithstanding.
I’m over the border from Steubenville and our local media has said nothing about this party itself. These are kids, and while they are old enough to know better, there should have been some responsible adult involved to prevent this situation. Looks like adults actually cared about these children only when it appeared the incident would besmirch the football program. Parents, coaches, administrators — whoever — should be punished too.
The Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine was in town and held a press conference after the sentencing. He is calling for a Grand Jury to convene in April. Hoo boy this will get some in Steubenville scrambling. The owners of the three party houses, the adult/adults who supplied the alcohol, adults who tried to cover up or minimize,other teens who are found to be involved and even a previous rape that occurred in April will be looked at. This is just the beginning. Wow

This was not some drunken youthful mistake. They were gleeful and joking about their crimes long after the booze wore off. They only showed “remorse” after they realized their a***s would be behind bars.
Such outright displays of evil should be made an example of and this should be a case study in every teen alcohol class.
But seriously, just think about how messed up these kids are today. We had drunken teen parties back in the day. Obviously some girls had too much but we all knew not to mess with them and stop guys who tried. Even when we were 15. This poor girl was DRAGGED TO MULTIPLE PARTIES completely unconscious and not one person stepped in to stop it. Pray for America...
I’m not familiar with the details of this event. But one article I read said three other boys weren’t charged in exchange for testimony. I’m not sure what those charges would have been had they been charged. Apparently the girl was the girl friend of one of the boys charged.
If a Grand Jury gets involved it could lead to some others being implicated.
