The San Francisco Symphony said on Sunday that it has canceled its upcoming East Coast tour as its musicians continue to strike over compensation.

**SNIP**

Orchestra management said in a statement that musicians rejected a "cooling off" period that would have allowed concerts to resume.

Musicians went on strike on Wednesday after contract negotiations fell through. The orchestra said on Sunday that musicians have rejected a number of proposals, including one that offered increases in musician compensation to achieve a new annual minimum salary of $145,979 with annual increases of 1% and 2%.

They need to raise ticket prices I guess.

or they can all quit and launch their own orchestra and pay themselves whatever they like. :p

Make ticket buyers pay unsubsidized prices and see how long these advanced flute-a-phone players last.

Many classical musicians feel that playing other people’s compositions along with 40 other people warrants special consideration.

Most classical musicians are also batcrap insane. Seems that somewhere along the line perspective goes out the window. Especially since many Chinese/Japanese schoolkids play at their level and think themselves normal, not special.

well, the market will tell....if little commotion, little distress, the musicians will get the msg.....its their right to strike for better pay, but it can also be their undoing..

Well...if you consider baseball’s minimum salary for 2012 was $480k a year....just to be a back-up infielder for the Kansas City Royals....then this $145k isn’t too bad of a deal.

My question is...if you sign up....could they trade you to St Louis or Detroit?

My bet goes with them IGNORING the message and going on a diva-like tantrum spree until we adopt a full “BBC’ model of government funding for the arts.

Throw up your hands,
Stick out your tush,
Hands on your hips,
Give ‘em a push
You’ll be surprised,
you’re doing the San Franciscan Mistake
Voila

I guess they can always extend their career switching to playing the boneophones and male organs in SF.

Anheuser-Busch doesn't spend hundreds of millions of dollars to interrupt Beethoven's 9th 18 times to tell you to buy Budweiser.

Meanwhile they’ve priced tickets way beyond what most people can afford. So they’re only catering to “the one percent” or so. Pretty selfish especially for artists in a city which prides itself on its advanced socialism. (They do give an annual free concert, I suppose that’s their sop to whatevers left of their “social conscious”.). I say let’s open it up to those super-talented kids !

I had the misfortune to know a Julliard grad who was one of that type. Believe me. If you think the average lib could care whether or not you draw breath, many of the ‘musical elite’ wish you wouldn’t. In fact, this one guy was literally offended that ‘commoners’ (yes, he used that term) were ALLOWED to listen to classical music at all.
