A Defeat for Demagogy - The failure of the "assault weapons" ban should make Americans proud.
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 20, 2013 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 03/20/2013 9:44:21 PM PDT by neverdem

"I don't have the words to describe the cowardice of Congress or the depravity of the gun lobby, which conspired to kill the assault-weapons ban," writes Ron Fournier of National Journal. We rate that statement PANTS ON FIRE, for Fournier turns out to be at anything but a loss for words.

"I can't explain the apparent impotence of President Obama who vowed to 'use whatever power this office holds' to convert the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School into commonsense common good," Fournier continues. Apparently Fournier needs a refresher course in the separation of powers. "I'm Just a Bill," the "Schoolhouse Rock!" classic, is as pertinent today as it was 40 years ago.

Fournier goes on to quote what he laughably describes as a "must-read column" by wannabe-pundit sportswriter Mike Lupica of New York's Daily News:

Any fool knows that [Adam] Lanza couldn't possibly have killed as many children as quickly as he did on the morning of Dec. 14 without an assault weapon in his hands. So how does the president and any other big politician who allows the gun nuts from the National Rifle Association to win again answer the larger question about weapons that make killings like the elementary-school massacre ridiculously easy: If not now for a ban on these weapons, when?
The headline reads "Spineless Pols Spit on the Graves of Newtown Victims by Not Pushing for Assault Weapons Ban." Hillel the Elder this guy ain't.

This columnist takes considerable pleasure in these emotionally overwrought laments, which are a synecdoche for the failure of the entire post-Newtown gun-control effort. As Fournier puts it, Obama and his allies wished "to convert the tragedy . . . into commonsense common good." We disagree on the merits and would put it this way: They cynically sought to exploit...

it’s not over.

I think it is. All of Reid's rats voted for Sotomayor and Kagan. That's plenty of damage already. Reid's not taking any more chances for a bill that will die in the House.

If the economy was booming, the US was on top of the world, no major threats, Americans would have given up their AW after Sandy Hook much easier then now. Americans on Main Street sense we are on unsteady ground. Economy has not recovered (2 percent growth with 3 percent growth in population). Gov debt is piling higher and higher. It is just a matter of time before SHTF, and people want guns available as Plan B.

Right, the b***ards will never give up. What’s most got my attention about this latest effort to strip Americans of their 2nd Amendment rights is the wholesale, orchestrated demonization of the Framers themselves. I’ve seen it before, but never to this extent. It’s unprecedented. When the rats do that, you can bet they are gearing up to upset the whole constitutional apple cart and dump us all into the street without any constitutional protections whatsoever. The commie menace isn’t far off, as it used to be. It’s at our door and trying to kick it down as we speak.

Bingo! But please don’t bunch liberal morons who voted for Klownie the Kenyan with the rest of Americans. They deserve every suffering that’s coming to them..

And Law Enforcement had better have some serious discussions with the gun grabbing politicians. LE wants us, the law abiding gun owners, on their side.

Not. Over. It will show up as an amendment on the reconcilliation bill. As usual the stupid party will cave.

They aren’t done.
This is a headfake.
Smoke and mirrors.
They will never stop until the private ownership of any firearm is a felony. Until the possession of ammo means 5 years in the pen.
If they get the House and Senate in 2014 its all over.
I’m serious. They will ban most firearms and register all the rest.
Obama, Reid and Pelosi will slam it home just like Obamacare.
They will retire to a life luxury having done their progressive duty.

There will be an effort to attach the ban to an all or nothing coninuing resolution that will result in dead puppies, snarfblats breeding strangely and such, should it fail.

The GOP will have no other choice but to do the work of the people and keep the lights on....

Same poop, different pooper. Oh and it will be done mid holiday weekend at about 3 AM.

Hello? Was that a forest that just went by? This, as you say, is only the beginning of an all out “assault” on our rights. King hussein ain’t done yet. Stay vigilant my friends.

They will still get their universal background checks and will soon go for registration and confiscation of certain classes and expand from there.

Ditto to those posters so far who recognize this crass bit of manipulation for what it is. There are many backroom meetings and deals yet to go. Any who believe themselves to be patriots will keep their wicks trimmed and powder dry.

This needs to be hollered from the mountaintops!

'If you’re the president, member of congress, govt. agent, etc, the only reason why anyone should listen to what you say, is because you exercise power via the Constitution'.

'If the Constitution doesn’t count, you don’t have any legitimate power, and should be (forcibly) removed for trying to exercise power you don’t possess'.

Excellent!!!!!!!!

Thanks very much.

They work for us and need reminded of that fact. They should be fired if they don’t adhere to the constitution.

We’ll have to Nuke it from orbit, just to be sure.

They will wait until they get the House back in 2014 and ram it through like Obamacare.

Non Compliance and Civil Disobedience will be the only options left for us.
