Starbucks CEO: We support marriage equality, and if you don’t like it, sell your stock

Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz on Wednesday defended the company’s decision to support marriage equality, and told investors that if they weren’t on board, they could sell their stock and go elsewhere.

Howard Schultz Last year, the Seattle-based company announced its support for legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state, prompting opponents of the measure — notably the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage — to launch a boycott of Starbucks.

At the company’s annual meeting Wednesday, shareholder Tom Strobhar described Starbucks’ first-quarter performance as disappointing, and suggested that was due in part to the boycott.

“In the first fill quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and our earrings — shall we say politely — were a bit disappointing,” Strobhar said.

Unfazed, Schultz replied that the company’s decision to support marriage equality was not the bottom line, but about respecting diversity, reported KPLU.

Starbucks also supports the second amendment despite much pressure to do otherwise. Just sayin'.

Well shoot!

That there just makes for them supporting the abomination of homosexuality, now, doesn't it!

I can buy better roasted coffee beans elsewhere to brew my own coffee. I much prefer local cafe’s when I want to something that is already brewed. The management of Starbucks is so full of themselves they over expanded in the 90’s and early 2000’s, when all they really had to sell was premium coffee at exorbitant prices. There were always lots of potential competitors who could sell similar coffee and undermine Starbuck’s market share. Hell even McDonald’s has added premium coffee to its menu all over the world, and they don’t have to justify their entire cost structure on selling brewed coffee.

I don’t know caffeine dependency cuts across ideological lines and they are the largest chain.

I’m not a coffee guy, I don’t think I’ve ever been in one.

“Its the (very new) cultural norm “

Seems like only yesterday most democrats were loudly INSISTING that they opposed it and that we were lying for saying they didn’t. Boy has the tide turned. Someone took their finger out of the dyke I guess. ;p

Marriage is already equal. What they are supporting is marriage revision.

Next time an anarchist throws a trashcan through one of their windows, I'll just remember that they support diversity (tm) and they should be happy about it.

I stopped doing business there years ago when they were supporting Planned Parenthood.

Which is why I did not support my company's sponsoring of the Race for The Cure, despite an attempt at shaming me into it.

The only time I ever drank Starbucks coffee was at a conference. I got one cup, took a couple of sips and poured the rest into the bathroom sink. I drank water the rest of the week.

It’s a line in the sand.

It’s the winnowing fork of Matthew 3:12.

This issue is separating those who obey God from those who are deeply of the world.

This CEO has forgotten he is just a coffee salesman. He thinks money makes him smart. He think big money puts him on a “higher level”.

He still just sells coffee in a coffee shop.

I never understood this. If someone is selling stock, isn’t someone else buying it?

Yet one more good reason not to spend money there.

Add Seattle's Best to you list as well (Starbucks owned.)

“...the moral fiber of this country IS going to hell...”

It’s been by design and wholly intentional. Using the media, the school system, etc., we’re living US socialist presidential candidate Norman Thomas’s statement about the country never accepting socialism, but adopting it wholesale by calling it “liberalism”.

When you make a people forget where they came from and who they are, you take them anywhere and make them into anything.

That’s what’s been done to the country at large.

If more stocks are selling rather than buying, the stock price will decline.

You missed my point. Stock sales = stock buys. When you sell a stock, you’re selling it to someone who is buying it.
