The fact that the prince in the story is generally handsome is a red herring. Handsome men are a dime a dozen among the peasantry; it's the man who can set you up in a life of ease that is the prize.

On average it appears that arranged marriages don’t fail at any higher rate than the marriages between people who choose each other. So I guess people make it work.
There is a difference between an arranged marriage that is based on looking for qualities of temperment and family background to find a compatible match for people and selling your child for money to someone old enough to be her grandfather.
