LITTLE ROCK, Ark. The Arkansas Senate voted Wednesday to override Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's veto of legislation that would require voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot.
The Republican-led Senate voted 21-12, along party lines, to override the veto. There was no debate beforehand.
The bill's sponsor, Republican state Sen. Bryan King, said he expects the House to vote to override the veto on Thursday. Each chamber needs only a simple majority to override a veto in Arkansas.
Beebe vetoed the bill Monday, saying it amounts to "an expensive solution in search of a problem" and would unnecessarily infringe on voters' rights. Critics say in-person voter fraud is extremely rare and that voter ID laws, which Republicans have pushed for in many states, are really meant to disenfranchise groups that tend to favor Democrats.
King dismissed Beebe's concerns after Wednesday's vote.
"It's unfortunate that his attitude is just a continuation of the attitude by Democrats in Arkansas that voter fraud isn't happening and they won't do anything about it," King, R-Green Forest, told reporters after the vote.
The bill would require the state to provide free photo IDs to voters who don't have one at an estimated cost of $300,000. It wouldn't take effect until there is funding for the IDs or until January 2014, whichever occurs last.
Arkansas currently requires poll workers to ask for identification, but voters can still cast ballots if they don't have one. Among the forms of ID poll workers can ask for are non-photo options, including government checks and utility bills. If a voter doesn't show identification, poll workers indicate so on the precinct's voter registration list and the county election board can send the information to prosecutors after the election to investigate possible voter fraud.

Good on ‘em.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why dems are so against voter ID laws, unless they interfere with voter fraud. We have to show ID for all sorts of things and they don’t complain about that.
Good for them.
Good! That needs to happen every time a governor (or any other politician) makes a point of ignoring the will of the people...
Cuing the lawsuit factory.
That must be one big majority of GOPers out there... they’ve been kicking Beebe’s a** with overrides all month. Good on them!
They TRY to claim that it’s about making sure everyone gets to vote. I even have some libinlaws that are lawyers that worked the polls in 2012 to make sure that people weren’t restricted from voting.
It’s all part of the “I’m a good person” righteousness of sheeperals.
And all the while, those in power know what it’s about.
Without voter fraud, they’d have a LOT less positions of power than they do today.
“unless they interfere with voter fraud.”
BINGO...!
Importantly, the balance in the Arkansas House is narrow, with 51 Republicans, 48 Democrats, and 1 Green. So this means that to override the veto, if all Republicans stand pat, it will still take 16 Democrats crossing over to succeed with 67 votes.
“...it will still take 16 Democrats crossing over to succeed with 67 votes.
And they won’t give up their freebies and lose their next election.
No, no it doesn’t, RTFM.
“Each chamber needs only a simple majority to override a veto in Arkansas”
Excellent!
My error, but I don’t mind in this case. It will still be highly amusing to see how many Democrats cross over, or give a big gift to their next election opponent.
Where the Hell does he get this? EVERYONE has to have a license to drive a vehicle. You can get an ID card cheap at the DMV if you don't want a DL. What's "expensive" about this?
Democrats are the most intellectually dishonest people I know.
“For the life of me, I cannot figure out why dems are so against voter ID laws, unless they interfere with voter fraud.”
Quite simple. You are a moral, law abiding, God fearing, respectful, believe in equality for all men, generous to a fault and proud citizenn of the USA.
And they are Democrats.
Shame on this Democrat Governor!!!!!
Viter ID is needed far more in this country than gay marriage!!!
If the Democrats, ACLU, et al were SO concerned about this so-called "disenfranchisement", why don't they pass the hat to cover this one-time cost themselves? Surely there are enough weepy-eyed liberals ready to dip into their pockets. (Crickets)
Ah, but that's a pigs flying scenario, for then their phantom voter list would disappear.
Each chamber needs only a simple majority to override a veto in Arkansas.
51 Republicans against 49 crats and 1 communist is a simple majority.
REPUBLICANS WIN! REPUBLICANS WIN!
