Speaker John Boehner told fellow House Republicans in an Easter week memo that his decision to allow the sequestration cuts to take effect has forced President Barack Obama and the Democrats to confront economic issues they have long been avoiding.

“We forged a new tactical plan that focused on using our limited leverage to maximum effect in support of the reforms needed to support economic growth and job creation for all Americans,” Boehner wrote in the memo distributed to House Republicans on Thursday. …

The memo noted that GOP efforts had forced Senate Democrats to produce their own budget plan for the first time in four years and had made the president focus more attention on the importance of addressing entitlement reforms. But it did not address controversial social issues such as immigration and gun control, which the Senate will debate after Congress returns April 8. …

In this ONE CASE he did win. He called the President’s bluff on “the sky is falling” because of the sequester and the country saw that it wasn’t.

Not a very big win, but a win - and hopefully a first step.

I don’t know if it was tactical but it did work. Even the liberal polls show as much. However do I really believe Boehner intended from the beginning to go ahead with the sequester? Not at all. I believe they did intend to cave. They deserve credit for not caving on this but excuse me if from day to day I can’t keep up with the number of times they do cave. :-)

Boehner is delusional. Sequestration was Obama’s idea and he fell for it. It is so trivial a cut but the most damage is in the most vital area of government and he calls that a “tactical plan?” The only thing Boehner is fighting for is a rock to hide under so the media can't find him.

They managed to get the Senate to publish a budget. Haven’t yet gotten the same from the Executive branch.

A little bit of tactical progress.

This is definitely not the “end of the beginning” to paraphrase Churchill.

The sequester gambit was possible and it was definitely a win

A 3% decrease in spending is not a victory, but the negative impact it will do to union dues is very important to conservatives.

However, this was mainly due to the Tea Party in 2011.

We'll see how the debt ceiling plays out, which is coming on May 19, 2013.

Let It Burn

“Let It Burn” is about inaction. There’s no point in trying do anything that avoids going over the fiscal cliff/sequestration. Remember, the deal that got us to this point was agreed to by House Republicans, Senate Democrats and signed by Obama. That’s as bi-partisan as it gets. I’ve heard from squishy low information voters, Obama and the media that “bi-partisan problem solving” is the Holy Grail of politics. Well, here it is.

The current system is rigged against conservative. We should play no part in its perpetuation. If you can’t win the game, concede and start new one. That’s the heart of Let It Burn.

This isn’t some petty “I lost so I’m taking my ball and going home” tirade. This is what people want. It’s simply not sustainable. If we can’t stop them, we don’t have to continue to enable them either.

We need to start disassociating conservatism from the GOP. We’ve tried it for 30 years. It hasn’t worked.

We’ve tried to save the country from the folly of expanding liberalism and the country said, “we don’t want to be saved”. Let It Burn just means letting them have what they want and rebuilding later.

As small as the victory was on sequester it was a HUGE STEP for the Republican leadership.

Without a doubt, their gay consultants (that he Republicans always seem to find) told them that they would get “creamed” by Obama on sequester - and, for once, they didn’t listen to them. But these SAME gay consultants are also telling them that they need to get gay marriage “behind them”, and the gay consultants do seem to be getting their way here.

even if all of that was true - why would one advertise that inside baseball stuff to the media (we know why)? There is nothing to declare victory over. nothing. Boehner should be increasing the pressure on the dems to reduce spending and reminding everyone there have been no spending decreases yet, just some minor decreases in the rate of increase. what a dork

If revenue bills must originate in th House, why can’t Boehner declare, “Read my lips: No new taxes.” Then grow a pair and stand by his statement???

The power of the purse trumps a lot.
