US News ^ | 4-5-2013 | Richard Satran

The Internal Revenue Service is collecting a lot more than taxes this year--it's also acquiring a huge volume of personal information on taxpayers' digital activities, from eBay auctions to Facebook posts and, for the first time ever, credit card and e-payment transaction records, as it expands its search for tax cheats to places it's never gone before.

Good....I think we all have shadows we'll never get rid of completely...unless an asteroid takes the whole planet out.

“Screw that”, I said and walked out.

What's hard about that?

Give them one - ANY one - and the clerk will be happy!

Problem with that is that a fishing lisence is an official state document and doing what you suggest is perjury.

Would they persecute (or is it prosecute?) and person for having a slight bit of typographical dyslexia?

This is a great GOP lever and will resonate with the American people. Rand Paul or some potential POTUS candidate should jump on this instanter. Set up a bill stifling the IRS’s ability to do this. Make them get a warrant, just like any other law enforcement agency. Let the burden be on the regulator, not the people.

Obama will be gone shortly. We need to make clear that the ACA is really DemCare. They wanted it for decades, they pushed it under Clinton and it would have gone no where without Pelosi, Reid and the Democrat majority that pushed it through. They earned it.

It’s DemCare or DemocratCare, take your pick.

You tell me. IMO, politicians and bureaucrats will use ANY edge they can get.

The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.(etc) Ayn Rand

I guess that if you don’t have a phone, you can’t buy a fishing lisc.

Actually, the IRS uses computers to compare the actions and behaviors of people. IT them compares them to a number of standards. If your personal behavior is unusual, you WILL BE TARGETED for an audit.

Odd behavior will become illegal. having a pet chicken, for instance. Reading about the habits and fashion of the ancient sumerians, or any other odd, out of the norm behavior will be tracked and flagged. Do not think that this will not happen. It will, because the USA government is now in the business of health. So they will , can and have, specify that you have odd behaviors and are thus prone to dangerous behavior.

There is one solution to all the ills that the USA finds itself in. OVERTURN the 16th amendment. JUST DO IT. It is the right, and just and obvious solution. But it is the elephant in the room that no one is talking about.

I wonder if nowadays not being on LinkedIn will result in people not getting hired?

If you go the ol' "send in the blind paper CV" submission route it will likely go to "file 13" unless you direct it to someone with whom you have made a connection on the inside.

What's nice about LinkedIn is you can invite people to make those essential connections with you through points of professional and academic commonality. You'll learn of such points by looking at posted profiles.

You have to be the kind of person folks will want to connect with so it is essential to have a sharp and accomplished profile -- just like you would need to have on a CV. You can link your CV or your website to the profile and make learning about you effortless and not overly time consuming.

I joined in 2008 and have made connections with ~ 2200 people. Landed my first project using LinkedIn within 30 days and over the 6 months from Sept 2008 - March 2009 the project paid >$100K. Not bad at a time when the economy was in such a downturn post Wall Street collapse.

More to your point though: yes, I think LinkedIn profiles will be used more and more to identify skills sets for employment and for projects which require customized (or customizable) skills sets. It has helped me connect with a lot of old colleagues both academic and professional, and it has allowed me to connect 1 on 1 with some very highly placed decision makers (and I mean the check signers.)

FReegards!

I walked out of a deal a couple days ago at a store for the same reason. I see no reason for phone numbers to be demanded for any of these things.

vannrox:
“If your personal behavior is unusual, you WILL BE TARGETED for an audit.”

Are you saying that by my refusing to give out my unlisted phone # is unusual behavior?

Personally, I find it ‘unusual behavior’ to require such info (and pay $29) just to drown some worms and maybe catch a fish that the state (NY) suggests you DO NOT EAT more than 4 ounces of it a month due to high mercury levels.

Just checking to see if we’re on the same page.

AFPhys:

Glad to see that others out there share my view. Thank you.

Lot’s of well-meaning FReepers have suggested that I give a fake phone number and just go ahead and buy the license. I have done that in the past and did consider it. I kept hearing a small voice in the back of my head saying “Starve The Beast”. I’ll use the money to buy more ammo, if I can find it.

Screw ‘em.

“Give them one - ANY one - and the clerk will be happy!”

Official document that has to be signed by my hand verifying that the ‘above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge, under penalty of perjury, blah, blah, blah...”.

If I’m going to be arrested, fined and thrown into prison it’ll be for something one hell of a lot more lucritive than lying on a fishing license application.

I can’t get out of this Communist State soon enough.

“Good luck with tracking ALL of us kooks!”

LOL.

Sadly, my pet chicken fell overboard and drowned in a boating accident last Friday night while I was dredging the lake bottom for all those lost guns FReepers keep losing.

The wife decided we needed 4 more little ducks for Easter.

They are just about big enough to be turned loose with the rest of the critters...

"The gargantuan IRS can now use profiling in order to enforce an evil confiscation system,"

... and to make it easy for the masses to receive an early refund, please provide your primary email address along with an alternate, as well as 3 out-of-pocket forms of ID...

"but it is not permissible to halt terrorism using profiling."

They don't pay taxes...
