EMP – the unimaginable reality (Red Dawn?)

Exclusive: Joseph Farah warns of 'Red Dawn' scenario becoming real-life catastrophe

Have you seen “Red Dawn”?

I don’t mean the old movie starring the late Patrick Swayze.

It was good. But I’m talking about the more recent version.

I hesitated watching it for a long time, mainly because I thought the producers of the movie sold out when they opted to substitute a North Korean invasion of the U.S. for what was originally planned as a more likely Chinese invasion.

Supposedly they did so because the Chinese movie market was too lucrative to pass up.

But, having seen it recently, and having followed the news of recent weeks, I think the producers made the right choice.

Watch trailer here:

The new “Red Dawn” is worth seeing as it comes to pay-per-view and video rental release.

It’s not a bad action movie.

But, more than that, the tactic that facilitates a joint North Korean and Russian invasion of the U.S. is the one I would use if I were trying to take down the U.S. quickly and efficiently and inexpensively.

I won’t ruin the movie for you by telling you the invaders use what is described in the script as a “new weapon.”

It’s actually not new at all. It’s relatively old technology called an “electro-magnetic pulse.” The power of an EMP attack was first recognized during the Cold War era. It’s a power that has the potential to defeat overnight America’s strength – technology.

And that’s exactly what happens in the new “Red Dawn.”

If I were the lunatic Kim Jong-un, it’s how I would use at least one of my nine nuclear weapons in taking down the U.S. – something he threatens to do on nearly a daily basis now.

As F. Michael Maloof explains so adeptly

Why would Russia, China, or N. Korea risk a war with America when they can just sit back and watch Obama destroy us from within?

If he uses enough duct tape, the house will stay together, even with a direct hit.

“we just don’t know the variables of the weapons”

What’s this “we thing”? You got a mouse in your pocket?

How are you going to shield every the inductive coil from shorting out?

I have no intention in arguing with you about this.

My opinion has not changed. The article is BS.

Electromagnetic Pulse is a impulse radio wave. It is created by a nuke (fission of fusion) but the impulse reaches past the blast area. Like all radio waves it decreases in field density as the wave moves form the source.

The problem for power systems is the energy is easily coupled to power lines. But the field density decreases rapidly.

Yes, small impulses will fry MOSFETS. I have fried them with just static discharge handling them.

So, I still maintain my original position.

The spike from an EMP device is similar to a large single pulse from a very powerful spark-gap transmitter.

Basically you charge up a bank of capacitors to 2000+ volts and discharge across a small gap. The rig I saw had a sort of short dipole with the gap at the center. It was discharged inside a large metal shipping container. The pulse did fry modern electronics. The pop from the discharge was very very loud outside the container...I can only imagine what it was like inside.

If the rig had been discharged outside the metal container the rf pulse would have been detectable thousands of miles away on an hf receiver as a static pop.

The leads and copper traces of the tested electronics had a current spike induced in them from the pulse... every piece of electrical conductor worldwide has current from rf sources flowing in them. This is how radio works...but when the current is very large it will damage modern electronics in much the same way that you can ruin your computer if you are poking around inside and a static charge jumps from your hand to the circuitry.

There are small non-nuclear weapons that create short-range EMP effects. They use the power of an explosion to create the short pulse.

You will still die, but at least you will have nice smells to die to.

Maybe not so much in the weeks leading up to The Event. That bacon could get pretty ripe waiting for it to get cooked. I think he had better stick with the duct tape and foil.

While the early atom bombs and EMP effects were significant, although the electronics and technology were of a primitive state, comparatively speaking) rarity and stage of development that they were far less susceptible to EMP, research since then has focused on those incidental effects, and learned to concentrate on the EMP effect itself.

I agree and I would add that the threat also includes a natural occurring E3 event.

I am currently reading The Sun Kings. The Carrington event had caused extensive damage to the US and European telegraph systems. During the event, operators died and there were reports of rail tracks arc welding together. The telegraph system was primitive by today's standards, however it began the radical transformation of the world. A good read is The Victorian Internet.

We are very vulnerable today compared to then. The cascading failures today would quickly return the US to a very medieval standard of living. That is actually an optimistic prediction. The stone age is probably more likely. We can thank Murkowski for leaving us completely vulnerable.

Life would have been extremely difficult with loss of communications, however we could of at least brought power back for reconstruction.

Wow. Someone who has a clue about the relevant physics. Not surprised at all that you’re a fellow Texan.

If you have an answer to this, then give us a hint. ""In fact we know that it is real, we just don’t know the variables of the weapons, delivery, various electrical systems and at what level, distance, etc. and so on.""

You know they’re wondering “What the hell are those stupid Americans doing to themselves?”

An idiot like 0bama wouldn’t last a week in most countries.

I have know physicists. My tech background is in RF.

I know quite a bit about electromagnetic waves.

I taught those concepts for grins at an AFB a couple of summers at the behest of TSTC. Really enjoyed it.

I miss my old tech friends from my years in NM.
