Ben Carson Steps Down as Johns Hopkins Commencement Speaker

Citing the recent controversy over his comments on same-sex marriage, neurosurgeon and rising conservative star Dr. Benjamin Carson has voluntarily stepped down as commencement speaker at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The Baltimore Sun reported that Carson, who heads the department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, informed medical school Dean Paul B. Rothman in a letter that he didn't want to "distract from the celebratory nature of the day."

"Given all the national media surrounding my statements as to my belief in traditional marriage, I believe it would be in the best interest of the students for me to voluntarily withdraw as your commencement speaker this year," Carson notes in the letter to Rothman who later shared it with the Johns Hopkins community.

Another supporter of marriage driven from the public square.

I understand how he didn’t want to distract. I wish he hadn’t backed down, but I understand.

Funny.

Liberal speakers NEVER care about the effect they might have on a commencement day. It is all about them.

Caving in only makes them stronger. He may as well give up all of his public speaking engagements and stick to medicine.

Hearing from Carson is a privilege. These students didn’t deserve it.

I heard it was only 8 students who protested his speaking....but...I think we all should AVOID any doctor with a degree in the recent past or future from John Hopkins....likely not very qualified

He said he wouldn’t do this unless the school asked him to withdraw. According to the article, the school says they did not ask. So he backed down despite a specific promise not to.

IMO, he is disqualified from running for public office after breaking that promise to the rest of the graduating class. He’s a great speaker, but he hasn’t got the chops for politics.

“he hasn’t got the chops for politics.”

On the surface I would agree. On the other hand, one has to pick one’s battles. His affrontery to Obama at that prayer breakfast was not the behavior of a wimp. So I’ll reserve judgement.

It is now up to the rest of the students to boycott their own commencement.

Jesus didn't think that way. He went to places where nobody deserved to hear Him. He spoke anyway and He changed lives.

Conservatives need to be the same way. If we sit in our ivory towers and speak only when we are spoken to, we are doomed.

Their loss. I would pay to meet and talk with Dr. Carson. His life story is amazing, even tho I don’t agree with all of his views.

I think that may be the problem - there is no one conservative with whom every other conservative agrees, so not all will vote for him. However, liberals lie to all the voters, telling each one what he wants to hear, and telling the next one the opposite - so all the libs vote for him.

Conservatives are lousy liars. That’s what it takes to get elected in this country. Off point, but I think I just made a break thru of some kind, if only in my mind.
