(Maine Gov.) Paul LePage: Beretta, Colt and Magpul—Come to Maine
Wall Street Journal ^ | Sat, April 13 2013 | Paul LePage

Posted on 04/14/2013 7:41:44 AM PDT by Peet

When Americans think of Maine, they often think of rocky coasts, lobster and moose. But Maine also has a long and proud tradition of military service, a legacy of world-class manufacturing, and a high percentage of personal firearm ownership.

That's why I invite manufacturers of firearms and related accessories—some of which are under siege in their home states by politicians pushing anti-gun legislation—to come to Maine. As a state that is fiercely protective of our right to bear arms, we will welcome you and your business.

When it comes to guns - Maine has always been very conservative. Granted their are an active group of progressives that would love to undermine that - but the local gun lobby (not the NRA necessarily) is incredible and can adnminster a beat down like you have never seen on anyone who dares to tread on Maine's gun rights. Also - the Constituion of Maine is quite --I think. Here is Section 16. To keep and bear arms. Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.

Incidentally the constituion of Maine was amendened in 1987 to add: “and this right shall never be questioned.”

you post: “There is only one US state that borders exactly one and only one other US state.”

Yep - and is wrapped around on three sides by Canada mostly New Brunswick, which is like a separate country from Canada. and the ocean - 3,000 miles of coast line!-
Glad I have my passport - may have to become a ‘refugee’ - easily done from here.

A move to Maine? Are they kidding? You can’t get any bluer than that.
They’ll have to move again in a couple of years.

“Even in Austin, where I live, lines at gun stores are long and “gun control” talk is virtually non-existant.”

My cuz’ transferred from UT years ago and he lived in Austin. Tells me Austin is a blue city but when it comes to guns, even the libtards can’t go up against the tide as almost everyone is packing.

Like that’ll happen. Maine is one election cycle from becoming North Korea. LaPaige won in three way mud fight, he probably won’t be back, when the progressives unite. I think Texas, or Alabama are where I would be looking.

As someone who summered in Maine as a kid, Maine is not LIBERAL, if you go into Portland and Lewiston, you'll see the LIBERALS, but the small towns are the home of American Values.

Yes, maybe Maine is not as conservative as Texas, but it is a LIBERTARIAN state (that's why gay marriage is law), the population thinks it should be up to the states -- not the feds.

Illegal aliens? Just days after taking office in January, 2011, Gov. LePage ended Maine’s status as a “sanctuary state.”

Non-gun friendly? I’ve been here 20 years, and Maine is one of the most pro-gun states around. Everyone I know is armed to the teeth. Being mostly rural, there is a tradition of hunting and firearm ownership that goes WAY back. I’ve never heard of Maine wanting to phase-out gun ownership as older gun owners die. That’s news to me.

The southeast corner of the state....where Portland is located....has a big chunk of the state’s overall population. There are a lot of liberals in that area, as well as many of the coastal areas throughout the state.
I’ve heard many Maine people call southern Maine “North Massachusetts.” The southern most part of Maine is within commutable distance to Boston.

The business climate here is not good, although Bushmaster has had a presence in Maine for a number of years.

Maine historically has a great deal of poverty, and it has become, unfortunately, a welfare state. Poor people tend to vote for democrats, as do the well-to-do liberals that have moved to Maine’s coastal areas over the years from liberal states. These low income, rural people, even though they vote for democrats, have a strong tradition of firearm ownership.

Also, the Republican party in Maine is not very organized or well-funded. If they could fine tune a conservative message and get better organized, they could probably do a letter better in elections. The GOP won control of the Maine House and the Maine Senate in 2010, but the dems re-captured the house and senate in 2012.

The Maine National Guard had one of the highest percentages of members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan of any state.

Thank you for the update. I last stayed in Maine in 1990 while on business. It was scary poor then. The front page of the Presque Isle newspaper one day had a picture of a falling-down shack along with the pix of two brothers who looking like Larry and Daryl from the old Bob Newhart show. They had killed their mother and then hid the pieces in the walls. The smell attracted attention and, well, you can guess the rest. I did not know the new governor had corrected some of the state’s worst Liberal abuses. Good news. But it has more people on welfare now than have work. Rich Liberals are a disease, like hookworm.

That's a good one Travis! But I think it is still too unsafe to trust to the average Comrade, er, I mean, citizen.

How about we settle on something safe and sensible just like the Brits?

You guys have a great CONSEVATIVE governor, but he’s not going to get elected again. You lost the house & senate after just 2 years. Too many welfare cases in Maine. Damn shame cause it’s a beautiful state.

The Maine House and Maine Senate flipped back to the dems in 2012 because more voters turn out in presidential election years than during the mid-terms.

Another reason....the dems are better organized....the Maine Republican party is dis-jointed and doesn’t have enough funding. The flip of the Maine House and Senate in 2012 from the GOP to the dems....the Republicans didn’t see it coming.

I’m hoping our current governor can get re-elected in 2014. The “independent” who challenged him in 2010....Elliot Cutler, who used to work as a staffer for Edmund Muskie....announced he’s going to run once again as an “independent.” If that happens, the dems and this “independent” Cutler may very well split the vote once again. We’ll see. As for Paul LePage, he does have the power of an incumbent. Sure, the libs hate him, but I would be worried if they liked him.

You’re right about the welfare cases in Maine. It’s a cancer eating away at the entire country.

Eventually, I’m hoping to re-locate to a conservative area of Florida and only come to Maine during the summer months. I’m rather fond of Texas, too.

As much as I hate to say it, if I was a gun manufacturer I would not re-locate to Maine. States like Florida, Texas and Tennessee, among others, have a huge tax advantage over Maine, and I’m assuming cheaper energy costs.....and of course, mild winters.

I lived in southern California for many years, back in the days when the state was really terrific. If it was like it once was, I would go back in a heartbeat.

Snowe did not run for re-election in 2012. Our ex-governor, “independent” Angus King, ran for that seat with the help of tons of money for out-of-state libs, including Nanny Bloomberg.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Angus King is even worse than Olympia Snowe.

Susan Collins is up in 2014. I guess I’ll be voting third party. When Collins first ran for the Senate, she said that she would only serve two terms. If she is re-elected in 2014, she will start her fourth term in January, 2015.

They all make me want to puke, too!

I was new to Maine in 1990. Unfortunately, the state is still relatively poor, especially in the rural areas, which is a majority of the state.

I had to laugh at the Larry, Daryl and Daryl comment....I’ve seen, and have known, many people here who resemble them.

I don’t recall the murder case you mentioned from 1990, but we’ve had a few bizarre murder cases over the years, in spite of the fact that the overall violent crime rate in Maine is very low.

When I lived in southern California years ago, bank robberies were so common they seldom, if ever, made the local news. Here in Maine, bank robberies are big news, because they are rather rare.

It’s true, more people in Maine are on welfare than ever before. It’s a problem not only for Maine but for the entire country. To quote Margaret Thatcher, “Socialism only works until you run out of other people’s money.”
