Posted on 04/16/2013 9:33:09 AM PDT by kristinn
A person briefed on the Boston Marathon investigation says the explosives were in 6-liter pressure cookers and placed in black duffel bags.
The person says the explosives were placed on the ground and contained shards of metal, nails and ball bearings.

Time to ban pressure cookers.
Thanks for that insight.
Someone planned to do maximum damage . Very similar to a Claymore mine,
using ball bearings to cover a blast area.
A common type of explosive used in Afghanistan from what I’m hearing.
When Pressure cookers are outlawed, only outlaws will have pressure cookers
And don’t even get me started on the Fry Baby Jr. or the George Foreman grill...
I’m guessing that the pressure cooker acts to keep the explosive gases in check up to a point so that when they finally blow there is more force involved. Maybe this is super obvious to all anyway but I dunno, maybe not.
A law enforcement source told CBS News that one of the explosive devices appears to have been placed in a metal pressure cooker (a metal kitchen pot with a locked down top) which had been placed in a black nylon bag or backpack. Investigators also found pieces of an electronic circuit board possibly indicating a timer was used in the detonation of the bomb.
A law enforcement official told CBS News that the two bombs that exploded were made to look like discarded property. It is still unknown if one or both bombs were in garbage cans. One may have been on the sidewalk.
The bombs were described as "low explosive," but with "anti-personnel" packing. This is consistent with doctors reporting shrapnel pulled from victims. The official said there were apparently things like BB's, ball bearings and nails in the bombs.
While the explosions were fairly large, the bombs were made of "low explosives," the official said. Right now bomb experts do not think that plastic explosives were involved.
Time to ban pressure. And cookers. And ball bearings. And nails. And shards of metal.
Anyone with shop scrap is a potential terrorist.
Or register them.
Will I have to register my pressure cooker, now? Can I pass it on to my kids without any background checks??
You’ll pry my George Foreman Grill away from my cold, dead hands...
If registering pressure-cooker owners saves even one life, it's worth it. Do it now ... for the children!
Same principle as pipe bomb and smokeless powder firearms. There needs to be pressure to have an explosion. Broadens the range of materials that are suitable as a "propellant." Might even work with matchheads.
It is a variation on a pipe bomb with the advantages that it will hold a larger volume than a pipe bomb and doesnt look like one either.
If you found a pressure cooker in a backpack would you immediately think Its a Bomb!!!
Low explosive (versus high-explosive) would equate to black powder. The amount of smoke also would be consistant with black powder.
If that turns out to be the case, stand by for black powder to be added to a background check bill.
I was just looking at an All American 21 1/2 qt...
I bet that put me on a “list”.
An old pressure cooker?? or a new one??
Perhaps very traceable if bought in a store rather than a Goodwill....
Low explosives would include black powder (nowadays black powder substitute) or smokeless powder. The latter will only explode if confined and permitted to build up pressure.
Guess they’ll be going after rifle and pistol powders next?
Alternately, the air-tight seal could contain the odor of the explosives, so bomb-sniffing dogs would not smell them.
If this was out in the open...someone could/would/might have noticed it.
Were there any used for a food stop??
Someone who comes from the Muslim world is more familiar with pressure cookers. They are widely used to conserve fuel in developing countries that cook single pot foods.
They aren’t that popular in the US and sales should be easy to trace.
Like my mother in law’s cooking (all done in pressure cookers and results looks like shrapnel).
If theyr’e saying they know what they looked like (discarded property), then they have a video. Cross your fingers. Cameras all over the place.
Pretty commonly used at high altitudes of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Accused Fort Hood plotter got bombmaking recipe from Al Qaeda
Abdo admitted that he planned to assemble two bombs in the hotel room using gun powder and shrapnel packed into pressure cookers to detonate inside an unspecified restaurant frequented by soldiers from Fort Hood, the affidavit says.
The plot was uncovered by the suspicions and quick thinking of a clerk and manager at the Guns Galore gun shop near the military base. Abdo reportedly asked the manager what “smokeless powder” was. The soldier then purchased six, one-pound containers of smokeless powder.
Someone claimed that the odor was similar to fireworks.
Yes, it could have that benefit too. I was just pointing our or amplifying part of the story, that a "low explosive" inside a pressure cooker will make an explosion. That same "low explosive" out in the open will just burn.
-- Were there any used for a food stop? --
But, thinking aout it, I know of an old fast food place that used pressure cookers. Chicken that was "broasted." I don't remember the name of the fast food chain.
No amount of tax cuts would have prevented pressure cooker purchases.
That is exactly what I was thinking. It looked exactly like a black powder bomb. Tons of white smoke and a relatively small fireball.
They used pressure cookers for our local chili cookoff.
There are people on this very forum who have more than one pressure cooker. These are called “arsenals” in the New York Times.
At first i was going to reply, then realized you were being sarcastic ;-) Damn time consuming to can a few quarts of veggies in a one liter cooker!
The Pressure Cooker Police will soon be breaking down my front door at Oh Dark Thirty!!!!
Fireworks -> black powder (sulphur in the smell)
More Fort Hood Plotter Details Emerge: Built Al Qaeda Pressure Cooker Bombs
Authorities told FOX News Channel Saturday that in a search of Abdo’s hotel room they found 18lbs (8kg) of sugar, a pressure cooker and smokeless gunpowder that was to be used as the trigger. He had enough bomb making materials for two bombs, they said.
“He was all ready to go,” one law enforcement source said.
The bomb making materials and methodology was “straight out of Inspire magazine and an al Qaeda explosives course manual,” one counterterrorism source said, referring to the terrorist organization’s English-language magazine.
A second source confirmed that two additional Fort Hood soldiers have been questioned about Abdo.
According to the criminal complaint, Abdo admitted to the arresting officers that he intended to conduct an attack in Killeen and Fort Hood and that he had explosives in his backpack and his hotel room.
It was revealed last week that police found a gun, ammunition, two clocks, and two spools of auto wire in Abdo’s backpack, along with an article entitled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom.”
Have any leftovers? Chili, I mean, not pressure cookers.
Sugar with smokeless gunpowder trigger.
Only if they can prove they never intend to use them as bombs - only for meal preparation or canning.
Mine was pissed to find out I'd been using the oven to cure paint.
Eric Holder: Say, you know who has a lot of pressure cookers? .............. CHICK-FIL-A!
Unregistered used pressure cookers are found at thrift stores and garage sales all across the US! They can be purchased without a background check!
Presto, Mirro, All American? Does anyone really need one of these evil things?
Why would anyone need one in 6 liter size! Limit them to one liter! No one needs a larger one! Anyone with a larger one will be guilty of a FELONY!
Same MO. Thanks.
While all eyes are on Boston, better watch out what Obama tries to slip through in DC!
Good choice. All American was the only one my mom would use. She trusted the seal. She was a bit jumpy around pressure cookers.
Another device was reported under the grandstands but has since been scrubbed from what can tell. It had reached the point of beginning to smoke.
The possible device under the grandstands maybe is the one we originally heard was doused with water by Fire Department?
