The bottled water lady could be a ‘right wing extremist’ providing cover for the bomb.
Observations:
The explosion came from under the tree, not the bag near the metal mail-box. They are saying it was a pressure cooker, but maybe it was just something similar. You can even see where the smoke is coming from.
A Chinese student was killed in the blast. He is the third victim. Is that him in the doorway?
I think the explosive was relatively low powered and did not have enough ummff to blow a heavy porous grate with a bunch of people standing on top of it. This theory makes perfect sense with regard to all of the lower leg injuries seen. This also means it is highly unlikely the perp was even in the area at the time unless he wanted to get a good look at his handiwork.
From the standpoint of a runner, this seems like a really unlikely spot to be handing out water. It's what, a few hundred yards from the finish where there'll be plenty of water? Every race I've been in has water tables set up every couple of miles, with several volunteers handing cups of water to the runners as they pass by.
I wonder if handing out water is a cover, or if she's just trying to be helpful but in a rather unhelpful way...
Not that it helps the discussion much, but that's a 'Crate and Barrel', not 'Cracker Barrel'.
A grate over a bomb would have become a projectile! Those grates around the trees are not bolted down and made of usually brass to keep from rusting. I would also venture to say it would have also become shrapnel as they are slotted and made to break apart when needed for growth of the tree trunk.
So if the grate looks intact no cigar.
The race was coming to and end there. These runners were bringing up the rear.

She clearly has several bottle in hand, and she’s likely not allowed beyond the fencing.
The mailbox would be a marker for the runners as to where water was available.
Yes, quite possibly. But look at the "before" picture. There are approx. 10 people standing on the grate.
Anyhow, I offered the tree well as merely a possiblity: one of many.
We cannot see if the grate is intact or not. The smoke IS coming from the area of the tree regardless.
Re:”A grate over a bomb would have become a projectile!” - not if it was a low energy explosive (drumming up my Mythbusters explosion education) and if the grate had 20-30 people standing on top of it. If the grate were solid, maybe, but these grates are porous which allowed the power of the blast through the grate (as well as the shrapnel which did the damage.) See pic on #129.
Now if the FBI would just post more information on FR, we’d have this thing solved by the end of the night.
They do have small pressure cookers with handles like a saucepans. Hiding something under the grate of the tree seems plausible. Wonder if there are photos of other trees and grates...were there also some sort of pots around the trees just for decoration.
If it was a suicide attack, the attacker could be one of the dead. Just walked up to the crowd, and pushed the trigger. Or whatever you do to set off the pressure cooker in the back pack. North Korea has plenty of suicide troops available.
What bugs me, is that they let slip that they were investigating an Arab from Saudi Arabia. Since 911, they never ever let it slip that Muslims were responsible. Only when they are forced to, do they admit it might have been workplace violence by a Muslim.
So who could have attacked us that would have been worse then a Saud ? Only one primary candidate right now.
Do we know if that grate is from the second explosion or the first.

I don’t think the cooker was in an obvious back pack. I think the stuff they are finding, vinyl maybe, is what that they put over the base of plants to keep weeds down. Like tarp stuff. One could hide anything under that and no one would think anything of it being on top of the tree roots under the grate. Unless they find labels they are just guessing that it is a back pack.
Sounds plausible to me.
I’d definitely think the blast was behind the barrier, else it won’t bend the barrier toward the street. Possibly, an isle of sorts naturally formed behind those at the barrier with people densely packed at the standup tables/chairs, so dense as to leave the chairs standing after the people were treated and/or fled...speculation.

According to the Fox 5 report, those are pictures from the first bomb but who knows if they are accurate. I wonder if there is a grate in the area of the first bomb as well?
