Syria: 11th-century minaret destroyed
The UK Telegraph ^ | April 24, 2013 | Richard Spencer

The 11th-century minaret of the Great Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo, one of the world's oldest and most important, has been destroyed by shellfire as the Syrian war consumes the country's vast repository of historic sites.

Oppositions activists in the city said the minaret was hit by tank shells fired as part of a regime assault on the mosque, which was originally built in 715 by the Umayyad dynasty and which fell into rebel hands last week. The minaret itself dated to 1090 AD.

Video posted by the Aleppo Media Centre showed a pile of rubble in the corner of the Great Mosque's courtyard, sprouting twisted metal spikes, where the minaret once stood. The colonnades and arches of the courtyard itself lie scorched, broken, and pockmarked with bullet and shell-holes.

The collapse also appeared to happen in the middle of a battle, with rebel soldiers stationed inside the mosque in the middle of live fire. They were claimed to be from Liwa al-Tawhid, a more moderate though Sunni Islamist-aligned brigade largely drawn from the countryside around Aleppo, rather than from Jabhat al-Nusra.

Moslems whacking Moslems and wiping out their own cultural heritage in the process sounds like a small win for civilization. It is a shame to see historic structures demolished, but the fact that it was historic to Islam sure softens the blow. Let the serpent consume itself.

The “average” muslim is one Friday night exhortation away from setting off a bomb at a sporting event to kill Americans. Tell your co-worker is he’s so concerned about his family to get his muzzie ass on a plane back there.

As long as mudslimes destroy only their own Shi’ite, I couldn’t care less.

Every time we help one of the rebel groups they always end up hunting down Christians and killing them.

The reason they do that is that's what they do.

Whoever the groups are who don't hate Christians really need to stand up and tell us.

Assad's Alawites are traditionally considered protectors of Christians mostly because they generally aren't outright hostile to them.

This is a situation the Alawites didn't create.

Because of that your thoughts that I ought to kowtow to Juan McCain and his rampaging Sunni rebels is simply vile. You should be ashamed of yourself.

A Muslim assault on a mosque. Boy, they sure hold those things in high regard.

Being a cabinet/furniture maker (or was till Ø's marxism killed the custom market), I *do* have an appreciation for the preservation of older stuff and actual antiquites *when practical*.

Having said that, I find myself not giving a flying damn - hoping, actually - if the all the goatf------s of islam destroy themselves, their vile barbarian 'culture', and any other trace of their existence.

This world would be an infinitely better place, PLUS it'd save us the cost of the weaponery needed to do it ourselves someday, should DC happen to stumble upon a collective set of testicles.

Sadly, those not involved are often hurt the worst. Assad is a barbarian, but Alawites as a whole are hardly the worst people in the ME. They are considered infidels by most of the Sunni muslims fighting the regime. The Nusra front are backed, or made up by, Al Quaeda militants.

With MOST of the population being against Assad it is a given that some of the fighters will have terrorist links.
