Today's teens more materialistic, less likely to work hard, study says
Lifeinc ^ | April 2, 2013 | Amy Langfield

Today’s teenagers are more materialistic and less interested in working hard than the baby boomers were in their teens, according to a new study. But sorry, boomers, the researchers say it’s probably your fault for creating a culture that breeds narcissism and entitlement.

Colleges in ths area are looking for students who will major in high math/science especially girls. My daughter went to a meeting of business owners. The speaker said most college students in masters or doctor degree programs are from out of the country. Kids today want the easiest degree possible no matter if there are no jobs for them. Then, they wonder why they can not find a job. Before she took a job with her late father, she had been offered a full scholarship in math/science. She has learned more from having to take over after his death. The company was recently awarded top exporter in the state. It has been hard but she worked her butt off to get to this point plus she has great employees. All of us still think her dad is helping them.

I’d be darn proud of that young man and I’m sure you are!! I do see many young people who don’t get it too. Neither did their parents. Sad.

I doubt colleges hand out full scholarships to anyone these days who isn't from Dagestan or Zimbabwe.

Your doubts are unfounded. There are some schools in the country that haven't been infected yet. My daughter is currently finishing up her second year on a full-tuition academic scholarship. Here is a link to a site where they are tracked.

Automatic full tuition scholarships

I actually agree somewhat with this. MY brother’s 2 sons are a perfect example. The other night I went to their for dinner and my brother asked them to do something and they put up quite a fuss. It is partly their own fault because they give them everthing when they were small they did not set limits on them. My mother used when she would babysit and they had the nerve to complain about it. As she tried to tell them; you have to establish boundries and set limits from the time they are small.

I’m sick and tired of this BS! This boomer has a daughter who graduates HS in two weeks with Honors, works 30 plus hours per week and received a full 4 year scholarship to a Private College majoring in Science and Math! Kiss my hard working baby boomer butt!!!

I also have a daughter who is graduating in 2 weeks from HS with a dual earned AA college degree(honors) She also works 20 hrs a week and was a varsity athlete for 3 sports a year for all 4 yrs. So proud of my teen too!

Having coached high school baseball for three seasons, a lot of the kids wanted to be police or fireman. But that could be from those related curricula and that ball players occasionally tend to be jocks.

The math and science masters/phd programs have been out of country for at least the past 25 years.

It was bad 25 years ago. And for the same reason. The American kids had no intention of working their behinds off in a post graduate program that left little time for smoking dope, getting laid or watching TV.

I am reporting both of you to DCS! You have obviously been to hard on your children. Your expectations and demands have set them up to excell in life beyond what is fair to their fellow citizens. Because of your parenting, your children will likely be punished with higher taxes and criminalizing regulations. They will selfishly exploit their talents, experiences and ambition in pursuit of social comfort, wealth and happiness. They might even start voting for republicans, or worse, align politically with a conservative movement that opposes government excess.

I hope you're happy. ;o)

Good grief, all we have to do is look at the Dork-in-Chief. A less talented, lazier, or more uneducated piece of rotten meatloaf existeth not.

Well said, sir.

Okay, you've gotten your brag in about your accomplished daughter. Great job in raising a good kid! That said, this study is discussing a trend and most, if not all, of the members of this forum would agree with its conclusions. There are always exceptions, one of which is obviously your daughter.

The pay is above minimum wage but that doesn't seem to factor in to their thinking

Yep. So I'm watching the news last night about the May Day demonstration in Oakland, Calif. Reporter interviewing the not-so-bright demonstrators, about their demonstrating for raising minimum wages to $15 an hour.

"Burgers are like $6 to $8 and that's almost an hour's labor, and the food isn't much. So we need $15 an hour to make things right.". Idiots don't realize the minimum wage burger flippers would cause the proprietor to double costs of a burger to $14 each or more if minimum wage doubled. Their thinking is so naive. You want more money, then work hard and gain experience to earn more.

Each generation has it “easier” from a materialistic point of view. And as the materialistic side increases, the moral side declines - which by nature removes responsibility and reason from the equation.

Very astute conclusion. A corollary conclusion is that a smaller and smaller percentage of each generation is doing the actual productive work. Also, a smaller percentage actually understands how things function.
