Marathon bombing victim Jeff Bauman cheers Boston
Maclean's ^ | May 4, 2013

There was an extraordinary moment Saturday night when Boston bombing victim Jeff Bauman served as banner captain for the Boston Bruins.

“Now THIS picture should be plastered all over the media,” said one post on the 27-year-old’s Facebook page. “They put up enough photos of poor Jeff in a time of distress, show him in his glory.”

Bauman’s lower limbs were blown apart when bombs went off near the finish of the Boston Marathon where he had been waiting for his girlfriend to finish.

“I want to thank everyone for their amazing support for me and all those injured and their families,” he said in a statement on Saturday. “I’m making great progress and I thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

He asked for privacy as he recovers. “I want to thank the Bruins players and organization for the generosity and support for all those impacted. Like all those in Black and Gold I can’t wait to see them on another quest for the cup. Go Bruins!”

In a now iconic photograph from marathon day, Bauman is shown holding what is left of his legs, while rescuers speed him to emergency help. The story of Carlos Arrendondo — the hero in the cowboy hat — is now well known.

What a man we are proud he is an American. I just hope when all the attention fades he will not go into a depression and realize what has happened to his life and what our politicians have done to him.

I am amazed at his recovery so far, and his mental attitude towards it. I’ve also noticed that the T word has all but disappeared in conversations about the bombing. Once again, once Islam is exposed to be behind a terrorist event, terrorism disappears from the conversation.

The ‘Boston bombers’ also apparently assassinated a college police officer. They kidnapped a man, stole his car and forced him to pull money from his bank accounts. Yes, bomber has a terrible connotation in public opinion, but terrorism is most typically associated with Islam, and anything that turns attention away from yet more victims of Islam is what many are seeking.

I haven’t seen it reported but I learned from a first responder that Mr. Arrendondo is holding Jeff Bauman’s femoral artery closed.
When people first see that picture (including myself) it looks like he’s just helping guide the wheelchair, but if you look at his right hand you can see it pretty clearly.

Wow. I had no idea. For sure he’d have bled out quickly without Mr. Arrendondo clamping that artery.

And don’t forget, medical advances from the last 10 years or so of our military getting care for amputations has made it better for future amputees..

Two legs blown off (relatively) days ago, the surgery and recovery SO complete to give such a healthy complexion ? I ain't buyin' it. Hell, three days after the flu I still look like shit.

Within a year he'll have prosthetics and be able to outrun you too. Medical technology keeps advancing, ironically much of it comes from the experience of war.

What’s the alternative?

Are you claiming - like other loons on the internet - that this guy is an “amputee actor”? So, all the EMTs and people on the scene were lying, his parents and family members are lying, all of his friends and co-workers are lying, all of his doctors and nurses are lying?

Do you think the image of him with his legs blown off was photo-shopped? Get off the conspiracy juice. There were plenty of witnesses to the event; it DID happen, and this guy DID get his legs blown off.

You think he looks too 'healthy' to have gone through this just a few weeks ago? I guess you haven't had anyone in your family in the hospital with a major injury, or illness, lately. They even have folks who've had a quadruple bypass up and moving by the second day, and they have good color by the end of that week!

It's been almost three weeks since the bombing, and he didn't bleed out that day, because that man with the long hair is actually pinching the artery to keep the blood from spurting. With good care and blood transfusions, the medical professionals got his circulation, and his systems, going again.

He is up and about now, and looking forward to the rest of his life. I'm glad to see him being celebrated by Boston.
