Anyone who has children has given hostages to the future. It's utterly selfish not to think of the welfare of those hostages.

The greatest good for the greatest number.Actually this is an attempt to maximize two variables at once, and is mathematically impossible. How can you follow this maxim if it's possible to increase the total amount of good by decreasing the good for some people? Or conversely to increase the good for some people by decreasing the total amount of good? This "principle" gives no guidance at all. Mathematically, it's totally meaningless.
