Historian John Diers, author of the new book "St. Paul Union Depot," will be among the train enthusiasts who will welcome visitors to the Union Depot on Saturday, May 11.
The newly refurbished Lowertown depot, which is expected to provide Amtrak passenger service by the end of the year, is celebrating Amtrak's "National Train Day" with free family activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Diers, who will deliver a presentation, will have copies of his book for sale.
The Radio Disney road crew, a vintage bluegrass railroad band led by Cannonball Paul, storeowner Choo Choo Bob and the St. Paul Saints' "John Train" mascot will be on hand to welcome kids into free bounce houses. Christos will be open from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., and free shuttle buses will take visitors to the Minnesota Transportation Museum. Radio personalities from MyTalk107.1 will lead the "World's Not So Biggest Train Dance."
The Twin Cities essayist with the best train-themed story will win two free Amtrak tickets to Chicago. Readers can vote on the short essays on "why trains matter" at www.uniondepot.org through Thursday, May 9.

You may have noticed that I am stuck on this idea of taxpayer money being used to pay for Free Stuff; well thats because I am a taxpayer and I dont get Free Stuff and wouldnt want it if I could get Free Stuff.
